I use Mac products cos I always have and it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks. My work phone is Samsung and blows the iPhone out of the water on spec, so rightly so!

Go for what's cheap unless you are into social media. Recently I bought a cheaper Motorola. Except for utility purposes I don't really use the camera and I don't need super duper good performance to today's standards. You will save at least 75%. I guess if I had that level of disposable income I'd go for the new iPhone every time.

Tried Android twice. Would never step that low ever again.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Apple is not the same as it was when Jobs was alive, this is not surprising at all.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

@K-A

85% of the world's smart phones are Androids, including all those made by Japanese makers like Sony.

Take a step up next time.

Apple is a bit of a joke when people go on about being the top smartphone maker.

Now I was an Apple guy from the first Apple kit back in 1976~77 stayed loyal for years but once you realise how Apple over us over prised does everything to control what you do then does things that force you to "upgrade" even when you do need to, they laugh at their most loyal customers.

This is the same as when as Apple loyalist I would say "Apple is the biggest PC maker" but in reality Windows PCs blew Apple out of the water.

Android OS has 85% or more of the marker just like Windows did in the PC market.

Reality is in the long run Apple will not dominate and will be a niche market like they were with PCs, something rich countries and people that like to think they are better use.

The rest of the world will go with what is cheaper more practical and doesn't try and control everything you do.

Today an Apple 1 could sell for $1,000,000. Pity you didn't keep it.

Yes I know now but at the time Apple offered a really good discount if you traded in your Apple 1 when buying an Apple 2 so seeing that the the price was so expensive I naturally took the trade-in deal.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Apple is here to stay.

Sure as it was before, a niche market for the rich and people that want to think they are special or "different" not following the masses.

When in reality Apple users are far more under control by Apple

After the G3 I dropped Apple because everything cost more than the same software for Windows.

The same is now happening now with Apple in full control of Apps that can be used on it's platforms.

Often costing more or restricted.

This was what hurt Apple PC as new software was not made available because of control by Apple and pricing.

Why did windows and now Android end up dominant?

Because the more open platforms mean far greater choice at far lower prices in both devices and software.

A simple look at history

Betamax was far better than VHS.

Apple OS was far better than Windows.

Why Betamax and Apple OS didn't become both failed was because of exclusivity lack of supply in movies for one and lack of software for the other.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Betamax was far better than VHS.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I remember hearing that you could not record 6 hours on a Beta tape like you could on VHS. Quality was not THAT important on those lower quality tube TVs decades ago even with Beta. That was the big problem with Beta. Was Beta quality really that much better for the home user? I don't think so, and this is indicated in the VHS vs. Beta wars.

Regarding Apple vs. everyone else. If I were rich I would buy Apple if I needed to make a quick purchase.

The most popular Smartphone in Japan is the iPhone.

Yes and the main reason was because it was Free for students!

Then once stuck in the "ecosystem" many just cannot bother to go through the trouble Apple puts in place to get out!

Many as they reach adulthood or university realise mommy and daddy are not going to pay the high price of an iPhone and get a far cheaper Android.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Oh to add, iPhone is the most popular phone in Japan but Android OS phones still command more than 50%.

So without the free iPhone for students iPhone share would be far lower.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Why are you guys arguing over stupid technology like it's a religious war? But you can't build an Apple PC to the way you want it exactly. It's not that much of a difference with PC vs. Mac. Buy what you like (but with Apple you can't build what you like) But I have run into lots of Mac users who see Steve Jobs like he's Jim Jones and just worship him endlessly. I remember before when Mac addicts would say to the effect of Macs can do the same thing Windows PCs can do in a bitter sense like they are talking about their mentally handicapped child who can read just like regular kids. I was always puzzled by these people who wake up in the morning just hating anything that is not Mac.

The new iPads are superior to any other tablet.

Only if you don't want to be able to use a full computer software and be limited to apps.

My surfacebook not only out preforms iPad but it is actually a full PC, no limits to apps only, full tablet and laptop.

My AI computer science masters degree daughter has Apple devices, Linux, windows and her go to is still her surfacebook because it is a computer not a glorified toy.

All those I know that are Apple users have a iPad and still need a MacBook or Apple computer.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

All the art studios I worked for used Apple

Yep just like I did until I realised I could build or have a custom built PC or laptop with far higher specs more software choice for far cheaper than buying Apple and I could upgrade those machines.

While my friends sat around waiting and waiting for Apple to finally come out with a new Apple Mac pro (they all had the trash can) because it couldn't be upgraded.

I modified my PC multiple times as needed.

I still have my same tower my daughter uses it now with better motherboard, more cores, faster chips and way more memory than could possibly be installed in an Apple device.

She would never be able to work her AI development on an Apple device.

SoftBank for years offered free iPhone and free calls to Jr and Sr high students.

This has been stopped but that was a major factor as to why so many now use iPhone.

I know because it was Free and as a parent that was a great deal so my 2 had SoftBank iPhones.

Once the had to pay ( or I had to pay) that was it got much cheaper Android devices and moved to a really cheap MVNO like Umobile.

Antiquesaving

The opposite is true for iOS vs Android. iOS gets all the new apps first or exclusively and Android users miss out. Look at Clubhouse, they just wrote an app for iOS and then wait to decide if they want to port it to Android.

This is because, although the Android market is bigger, Android users are less affluent and don't want to pay even apps. As a developer, it can be much less of a headache to just develop apps for iOS than bothering with subpar cross-platform tools and targeting both platforms. You may make money from iOS, but almost never will for Android.

It's not about the phone. It's about the whole system.

My iPhone integrates seamlessly with my MacBook Air, iMac and the iPad and iMacs in the office. I can start an email on my iPhone and finish it on my iMac. Any change in the Calendar is instantly updated to my wife's iPhone and MacBook. Even passwords are linked. It all connects up beautifully.

It's an efficient system. It doesn't matter whether it sells more or less than the competition. Lots of people eat fast food. That doesn't make it good.

It's not surprising considering Samsung have over ten current models to Apple's five. Samsung operate in the budget model market, which Apple don't, preferring to concentrate on high-end phones. In fact, it was surprising that Apple had a higher share of the market than Samsung previously considering they don't make budget phones.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I can start an email on my iPhone and finish it on my iMac.

I can do this on my Linux Laptop and can choose ANY phone or second device. It's better than Mac or Windows with security and privacy.

You can change the privacy settings but they don't make it easy.

I would not trust Apple or Windows compared to by Ubuntu excrypted with TrueCrypt

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Apple still grabbed record market share in the United States, China, India and Japan, Counterpoint analyst Varun Mishra said, adding that the iPhone Pro Max was a top seller in the United States

Well the iphone market share in India is less than 4%..now that is some record share, definitely a paid analysis.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

privacy settings

If I were a criminal I would use Linux with VeraCrypt (previous name TrueCrypt). The FBI got into an Apple device. I would not trust Apple for extreme security situations.

Linux is definitely not as secure as macOS.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Linux is definitely not as secure as macOS.

Yes, it is with VeraCryp. And Mac OS is based on a derivative of UNIX. VeraCrypt uses 100% software encryption. Does Mac use hardware encryption? Yes? That means VeraCrypt is better with Linux. No one will ever crack my Linux laptop. Ever! Mac? I might worry if there is a problem with the encryption chip (very very small chance but I still worry a bit compared to my Linux configuration)

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

nishikat

Defeating your encryption is probably impossible, but that's not the only way to get your data. For example, you could get a virus, a trojan horse, give attackers your password in a phishing attack.

macOS has increasingly been getting more secure with System Integrity Protection, gatekeeper, mandatory app code signing, app notarisation, secure boot to name a few.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Remember the FBI broke into an iPhone. A virus on Ubuntu? These days everyone is threatened with Supply Chain type and one reason why I backport on Ubuntu. Phishing attack? Specifically where? How does that affect me? And remember people have gotten shafted by losing crypto currency with scam Trezor apps on the iPhone App store and someone lost 600,000 dollars through that App that passed Apple's checks as mentioned above. Ubuntu on my Laptop is more secure than what Apple has to offer. But at the same time I would never do any financial business on a portable device.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

nishikat

Remember the FBI broke into an iPhone.

Yeah. They guessed the password. (Sure, they tried a whole heap of them.)

A virus on Ubuntu?

Sure. You think it can't be written? Ever used sudo? It has a flaw that will allow an unprivileged user gain root access to your precious Ubuntu.

Ubuntu on my Laptop is more secure than what Apple has to offer.

Not true.

But at the same time I would never do any financial business on a portable device.

I would. I use Apple Pay from my Apple Watch. Perfectly secure.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Yeah. They guessed the password. (Sure, they tried a whole heap of them.)

No! The auto-erase feature was bypassed due to Apple's exploit THEN they did brute force guessing. VeraCrypt has superior brute force protection and it is 100% software based, so you don't have to worry about any possible exploits from that. Unless you use the password cat124 in your VeraCrypt encryption setup you won't have to worry. It is set up so the system has to wait over one second before the next password can be attempted from the automated brute force.

If I were a criminal I would use Linux based PC with VeraCrypt. It cannot be broken into unless you use a very very weak guessable password. I would not put any of my criminal business on any other type of PC, and I would not use any smartphone or Tablet type device for that type of stuff, although I would trust iOS more than Android.

Sure. You think it can't be written?

Sure! But I use the official repository. And I use Uncomplicated Firewall for extra protection. But you need to open ports and Ubuntu does not by default open ports.

Not true.

Yes, (as explained above). 100% software based encryption is always more secure. Bitlocker had an issue with this and assuming Apple uses hardware based encryption I would be slightly nervous about it. But I should have said Ubuntu with VeraCrypt. I don't hate Apple. If I had the bucks I would get them all the time but of course still have Linux as my most secure PC. When people ask me which Laptop to get I ALWAYS tell then to get Apple but they always want something cheaper. Think about it, you are anywhere in the world and you suddenly need to replace your laptop. You just go to any electronic shop (airport...wherever), get the latest Apple note PC then you are on your way, but again you pay for that premium.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

nishikat

No! The auto-erase feature was bypassed due to Apple's exploit THEN they did brute force guessing. VeraCrypt has superior brute force protection and it is 100% software based, so you don't have to worry about any possible exploits from that.

This has absolutely nothing to do with encryption. The FBI weren't able to break any encryption on the the Apple device. They were only able to break the restriction of trying more than 10 passwords. So, please, stop mentioning encryption because it is irrelevant.

And to be sure, this was an old iPhone 5C. You can be sure that the exploit to be able to guess more than 10 passwords has been firmly closed.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Apple still had a few crypto scam apps on their store recently. Also read they had a couple of Zero Days just recently. If that person hadn't been relying on the false sense of security the App store provides he would not have lost 600k.

They were only able to break the restriction of trying more than 10 passwords

You just confirmed the weakness. Veracrypt throttles any such attempt under any circumstances

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

No

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Yes

Maybe you can put Linux on smartphone but I don't feel like dealing with that.

I went with iPhone

Good choice

They were only able to break the restriction of trying more than 10 passwords

You just confirmed the weakness.

Yes. It was through the USB port. It has since been closed.

Veracrypt throttles any such attempt under any circumstances

No it doesn't. Veracrypt only encrypts your data. It doesn't control login attempts.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

It doesn't control login attempts.

Yes it does. It slows them down and throttles brute force attempts to around one per second or two. Again, it's software based which makes it slightly more secure than hardware based. That is why when you use Windows Pro Bitlocker you want to choose software based over hardware as there were some SSD issues. Can you do that with Mac? Can you change to software base encryption or does it rely on encryption hardware?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

nishikat

Yes it does. It slows them down and throttles brute force attempts to around one per second or two.

That has nothing to do with VeraCrypt. That is part of Linux. And hence, if it is bypassed, it is vulnerable to brute force attacks.

Can you change to software base encryption or does it rely on encryption hardware?

Mac's have the best of both worlds. They used software-based encryption, but have a hardware-accelerated AES engine to ensure performance.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

That is part of Linux

No, it is VeraCrypt for whole disk encryption (for PC) NOT terminal Linux login. That is something different. Before getting to your Linux Logon you have to pass VeraCrypt security first.

but have a hardware-accelerated AES engine to ensure performance.

There is the potential for vulnerability compared to VeraCrypt. VeraCrypt is software based only. VeraCrypt on a PC is safer than Mac encryption (or Windows Bit Defender) as long as you use hardware based for either if the SSD is the weak link.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I’ll give you some of my theses. 1 Smartphone OS are almost all finally Linux based dialects and not even that, but only subsets, so that the provided functionality is just included. 2 There isn’t such a thing like unbreakable security or encryption, therefore you don’t need it. You think you need to secure credit card data or personal IDs? Come on, you find a copy at every issuing bank, company you made transactions via or with and IDs in all government computers and printed files. How will you get into all those places and secure? In addition, any encryption or strong passwords can be deciphered by contemporary algorithms, although still taking some time, but with quantum computing already knocking at the door in a few milliseconds, especially all your easy to remember ones, the others in some seconds. lol 3 Knowing this, why still hide and decrypt data? I tell you, because you are planning something suspicious , subversive or just only are a resistant person with a negative or criminal mindset.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

nishikat

but have a hardware-accelerated AES engine to ensure performance.

No there isn't.

VeraCrypt is software based only.

No it isn't. VeraCrpyt uses a hardware CPU. So in your reasoning it is hardware based encryption. This is essentially the same as using the hardware accelerated AES engine.

With a mac you get this hardware accelerated encryption out of the box, but if you choose to use FileVault, to get another layer of encryption which adds your chosen password as an extra layer of security over the default encryption.

VeraCrypt on a PC is safer than Mac encryption.

No it isn't.
