"Cutting corners" on an already inferior product doesn't need much time or fanfare to announce, guys.

inferior product while its certainly true for the Galaxy note 7 , the previous Notes were excellent. You can bet when Smasung release the next Note or similar itll be just as good as the previous if not better. A good kick in the guts does wonders for making companies leaner more efficient better products. Just look at Toyota and VW.

wtfjapan: "Just look at Toyota"

Ummm... they just announced they are afraid they may have to become competitive if Britain won't make them an exception to their expected tariffs and other import/export laws, not to mention how scared they are of Trump. If Samsung improves their product after this... once they head is arrested and things calm down a little, that is... then all the better for competition.

Ummm... they just announced they are afraid they may have to become competitive if Britain won't make them an exception to their expected tariffs and other import/export laws, yet there still the most profitable auto company in the world, making 25% more than VW for the same number of vehicles manufactured. why would they be afraid of Trump . 70% of Toyotas sold in the US are made in the US.

You can bet they'll blame it on design flaw or supplier's manufacturing error.

Ummm lemme guess the cause...batteries made in China?

The Galaxy Note series is one of the best phones you can buy, but the battery stopped from being removeable after the Note 4. I have purchased a Note 2/3/4 and people are still holding onto their flawed Note 7s (OS upgrades will "brick" them).

= good phone, but bad battery or bad battery/phone engineering. People really wanted the Note 7 -and it sold well- , but the engineering was not up to task this time and big mistakes were made that could not be fixed in a convenient manner.

Samsung Electronics said Friday it will announce on Jan 23 the reason why its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones overheated and caught fire.

The Samsung can tell whatever they wanted and protect the Company image. Samsung product catching fire was not just mobile phone and also some Samsung Washing machine models have several fired incidents and some peoples lost home by Samsung Washing machine fired incident in Australia.

Reason is simple: lack of quality for hurrying up a product to be the "first". Well, Samsung got it. The first bomb-phone ever.
