I wonder how these systems would like my NY heavy accent speaking in Japanese...

Is that really a problem? I think it is only a very small market segment, as most of the transactions or shopping experience is done in shops or mega centers directly and the very big rest over the internet platforms. There are probably almost no people doing all their shopping or other transactions by voice calls and even less if the other side is recognized as being an automated voice or AI bot. So just be it , you know in such few cases what you are playing with and will definitely have a losing streak, or would you sit down and play a chess game against someone with a deep blue algorithm in his background? That simply won’t be a funny match. lol

JT, thank you for this article. I had no idea that the tech firms would do this or be able to do this. I guess I will have to revert to my hostile Mediterranean accent every time I am near an electronic device, so it gets the image of someone they should not mess with.
