Yeah maybe wait a few iterations before getting one of these... either the Samsung or Huawei.

"Some of Samsung's new folding phones are already breaking"

I am not surprised. Korean products are like their promises, they also break them.

Marketing opportunity! Change the name to 'Galaxy Break', and charge an extra $200 for the 'newest' version...

Well you'd think that some basic field testing would have made the problem apparent to everyone, and considering that these complaints are pretty common among reviewers it can't be edge cases. What the hell was Samsung thinking launching the phones in this state?

I understand that Samsung phones are of bad quality...

I don't understand why there are so many naive fools that are buying their phones and supporting Samsung so they can make more low quality phones...

Shock, horror! what on earth were Samsung thinking? What a terrible start, people are reporting serious issues after just 2 days! That is beyond terrible, 2 or 3 months ???? maybe one could forgive them (but thats pretty bad) considering it was the first from a big name, but 2 days?

Samsung deserves to get a bad name for this!

It means that Japanese will have no folding phones available.

I still dont see the point of these 'foldable' screens. The tech is good; making flexible screens has lots of ergonomic potential, but the fold seems unnecessary. Off-angle shots show that there is a visible wave at the crease (which is obvious). If it is noticeable, then a pair of screens with even a 1mm bezel would offer exactly the same benefits, with the added bonus of being able to repair each screen separately, and being half the price.

zichi, you never owned one, did you ? Only people who have real folding phones can comment. Others disqualified, as simple as that.

Aside from that, many incidents occurred of Chinese and Korean phones exploding in the users pocket. Flaw in battery and overheating.

A good thing if they don't work.

@zichi - I agree, nobody really needs one, and they're too expensive, but they're supposedly designed to be used either open or closed so it still shouldn't be a problem for using with one hand. Just opened may offer more features though. I'm sure that once they've ironed out the creases these phones can be quite useful for some people.

Only Japan can bring the mighty two (Apple & Samsung) down.

Japanese company is working very hard to make the very best phone ever to blow out all other fishes.

It will be released soon. One day. 60s to 80s Japanese product companies era will be born again.

I totally agree. I mean they aren't all that pocketable (very thick and possibly weak at the hinge?),

Being pocketable to me is the main reason to have it fold (??)

You pay an extra $1000us to have it fold and then its not small enough to put into a pocket with out it sticking out

Sure, tech geeks will love any tech like this but for the average guy .....? I don't think so

Japanese of all people get it better than just about everyone else. After all, flip phones are still big in Japan and foldable phones are intended to appeal to folks who used flip phones for two decades before the arrival of iPhones.

Well, they better start releasing them, because China looks like they be the ones to serious compete with Apple and Samsung. Huawei and Xiaomi phones are quickly and aggressively stealing the market share from Apple and Samsung. I really don't see Sony or Sharp doing the same, they offer nothing outstanding or unique to grab a chunk of the market share. Sony's Xperia series is supposed to be a flagship smartphone that should offer the best camera but it is surpassed by the Huawei P30, Pixel 3, Galaxy 10 and iPhone XS.

What is the point of the folding phone? To save room? I don't think most people are complaining about the current size of smartphones.

So that you no longer have to choose between having a tablet and a smartphone. You can have both. This tech will have huge implications if they can get it working.

Samsung phones are actually bad quality compared to their price. They are overpriced despite being mediocre. I have had only one of them and I will never get another one. My last smartphones are Chinese and I find them very good.

The best phone ever I bought in my life was NOKIA. Great brand.

Nokia phones of the '90s had amazing build quality. I had a few different models.

At $1,980 eye-wateringly expensive. As a tablet, the Galaxy Book2 12" is a fine road warrior, good display, fits in a shoulder bag and can be purchased a shade under $1000. I brought a note 9 from a auction site for 47,000 yen , 6 months old even threw in a decent leather case.

Interesting future technology certainly, however still a smart phone with a thousand dollar hinge

@Haaa Nemui: Indeed, amazing phones. My last "normal" flip flop phone was Nokia. Excellent, Simply excellent, I love It! It still works! I bought my first smartphone (Samsung) only to have a smartphone. Maybe it's for this reason my experience with Samsung was so bad, after my beautiful experience with Nokia. It stopped to work so early, while my flip flop Nokia is 15 years old at least, and it still works. After my First Samsung, I started to buy Chinese smartphones. There's no point in spending a lot of money in so fragile smartphones. At least in terms of quality/price, Chinese smartphones are the best, imho. You pay for what you get.

There is a clear notation on the phone that says do not remove the protective covering. Sadly many people are removing the covering. The covering is similar to the usual plastic film that covers a screen when you first get it. However, this one is not to be removed.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Both Samsung and Apple need to wake up. They are doomed if they continue to sell obviously overpriced phones. At this point, Chinese phones are able to offer basically the same, at better price. This is how companies once great always lost their market share. They think nobody can do better than them, and they keep absurd high prices, not really justified by their products quality. Chinese competitors are taking share in any electronics market for this reason. Cheap and good stuff, not so much worse than more popular brands.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Just don't buy Huawei and you don't become a listening device for China

5 ( +6 / -1 )

@Jj Jetplane: but the article said also the phones with the cover are breaking. It's not normal.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

@sf2k: honestly, my next smartphone could be Huawei. We are spied all the time by Google, Facebook, etc. I don't see the difference, honestly.

@Alex80

you’re right.

Half my screen went black and now it’s blinking in and out. My phone only arrived this morning. This sucks.

But the good news is, because my phone is from T-Mobile, I can leverage this issue into getting my phone for free or at least 60% off.

When it comes to phone creators these days, because technology advances at such a rapid pace, we are really only paying for the name behind the phone.

Alcatel, Huawei, OnePlus, and more make phones that work exactly the same and do all the same thing.

Simply buy two ordinary $100 smart phones and some tape. $1000 saved.
