Sony is a Japanese brand that’s recognized all over the world for its variety of electronics, music, movies, and of course, their gaming console. While it’s been a while since Sony has brought the world something as iconic as the Sony Walkman, their labs have been burning the midnight oil working to bring the latest and greatest products that will improve your daily life.

Announced on March 4, the Future Lab Program is the new banner under which Sony will promote a creative environment and open communication with society to create new technology and lifestyles for the future.

Since the announcement of this new program, Future Lab has been drumming up excitement with teasers of one project that is likely to be featured at the South by Southwest conference and festival this coming weekend in Austin, Texas.

Titled “N”, the short video gives viewers barely a glimpse as to what the product can do, but at the moment, Sony describes the prototype as a hands-free user interface that creates a new way of experiencing audio such as music and sound, which allows the user to receive audio information without having to insert any object into his or her ear.

Could this be the headset of the future? Ghostly humans, give us a preview of what it could be like to walk through their showroom.

There are so many questions that need to be answered about this headset, but one thing is for certain, if Sony has developed a device that delivers audio into our ears without putting anything physically in there, we can’t wait to see what else Sony’s Future Lab Program has brewing for us.

Er, I already use a set of headphone that fit OVER my ears when listening to music... nothing goes in my ear. Or do they mean that not even the music enters your ear?

"Sony developing audio player that delivers music to you without putting a device in your ear"

Old news. There is already one. It's called "radio".

She is wearing something around her neck, which must be touching the collerbone.

These things already existed in England in 1897 by an Italian inventor :

3 May 1897, Marconi sent the world's first ever wireless communication over open sea.

It's called a "radio"...

I have been deaf in my left ear since birth, and I have never experienced full sound. That is until I bought a pair of Aftershokz Bluez 2, and now using bone conduction technology, I hear music, movies, and games in full surround sound! They don't go in your ears, and allows you to hear outside sounds as well. For anyone with a hearing impairment, technology like this is a miracle! I hope Sony uses the same tech!

"a creative environment and open communication with society to create new technology and lifestyles for the future." Right. What does that even mean?

Oh great. Now we will have to deal with blind-deaf people walking around looking at their smartphones where the music is blasting literally throughout their skulls. Someone develop a jamming system at crosswalks and train platforms next please. ????

Used to have one of those - think it is called a "speaker."

I'd guess it broadcasts directly to the auditory centers in the brain with no physical intermidiary. Think what governments can do when this tech is completely developed. They can broadcast thoughts directly into your brain. Maybe hey are doing it now.

Could be good for cyclists who need to hear ambient sounds too. Cycling with headphones is illegal.

"Feel the Breath of Life" - slogan

Does it cure asthma? Or fix China's smog?

That's awesome! The technology has been around for a while though never commercialised. Apparently the US military initially developed it by putting microphones in the mouth which would vibrate sound waves through the teeth to the ears and turn into sound, I guess this would be similar technology. Can't wait to see it in action!

i'm interested to know how they can transmit the sound only to the intended user. also, if this can be transmitted to multiple users, this can mean we can see future clubs and dance parties or even live houses without speakers. for people who are not in clubbing because of the noise but still want to hang out with friends, this can be the answer!

It could be a device that feeds the auditory nerves directly with electronic pulses giving the sense of sound without any actual vibration of the ear drums.

Samsung has announced a similar device working on the same principle but different effects in which it feeds the semicircular canals with electronic pulses to give the sensation of motion.

@M3M3M3 - good one! lol

i guess they should be more clear about describing this innovation.

The future is now. I already have this Sony product and it's fantastic.

The sound is amazing.

I have an audio player that allows me to listen without putting anything in my ear in my car.

I hope what Sony is hinting at isn't that white dog collar around her neck.

There is already a similar device on the market that allows you to receive sound without sticking anything into your ear.
