The new addition to its Vaio line of computers will cost about 60,000 yen when it goes on sale in Japan

this seems High-cost, likely that Sony will offer eco point discount that will bring the price in line with other low-cost selling netbook brands.

These little laptops are crap. I think Apple was at least honest about their inability to make a good one for the required price range.

Just buy an iphone and you have all that most of these not so convenient machines do anyway. And if you are going to carry around a laptop, you may as well buy one that can actually do something other than surf the internet.

Actually the low spec Mac Air is kind of a netbook. All Mac fan boys I know that have touched it complain how slow it is for any but the netbook-like use. Just the price is higher...

My netbook does far more than surf the net. I edit photos, play games, create documents, watch movies, etc - same stuff you would do on a full notebook. Sure it's not as fast, but mine cost something like 35,000 or 40,000.

The problem is these companies cripple their netbooks by shipping them with bloated Vista, which many full laptops have problems using. Put something more appropriate (say, Ubuntu) and the little machines shine.

Typing on a netbook if far, far better than pounding on iPhone's little glass screen. Now that's useless.

Netbooks cost 30,000yen, you get them with the EM mobile card and you'll get the PC for free.

A bit late. Crazy prices here for the past 5 years have drawn people to the INTERNET and purchasing their computers overseas. My new laptop cost me 499 at best buy in the states.

sony's obviously got a different definition of 'low cost' than everyone else

I recently picked up an Asus 1000HE, it is really sweet. XP home and performance is good, 160GB HDD and an unkillable battery

Sony were absolutely stupid to put Windows Vista with their last netbook. Unfortuantely, Sony is no longer at the forefront of technology and always seems to be playing catch-up. And, as usual, their prices are higher than everyone else. Their designs seem good though.

sigh Sony didn't become Sony by being a "me too" brand.

Until recently, I have never had a problem with a Sony laptop, and I've been through three of them. They're a little more expensive, but performance-wise and in terms of durability, they've proven more cost-effective over the long run. My only problems have come with my most recent machine, running Vista, and the majority of the problems are attributable to the OS, not the hardware.

That said, I passed on the VAIO "T" after trying out its keyboard--it just seemed flimsy--and got an Asus 1000HE, 12,000 yen with a two-year emobile contract. The screen is miniscule, but the keyboard is fine and, running XP, performance couldn't be better. (As with many lower-cost machines, though, the track pad is over-sensitive and lacks accuracy. Just look at it the wrong way and your pointer jumps all over the place).

I think Sony/VAIO's missed the boat in this case.

Apple was and is still the better option ... but Sony will be 2nd choice ...
