Major Japanese electronics makers Sony Corp and Toshiba Corp plan to lower the recycling charge for cathode-ray tube television sets with 15-inch or smaller screens from Nov 1. The move is aimed mainly at encouraging recycling at a time when an increasing number of consumers are expected to replace TVs toward the switchover from analog terrestrial TV broadcasting to digital services in July 2011.
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co has already announced a similar recycling rate cut.
Sony and Toshiba will lower the recycling rate for 15-inch or smaller CRT TVs to 1,785 yen per unit from 2,835 yen, while the rate for larger models will be kept unchanged at 2,835 yen.
Toshiba will also reduce the recycling charge for compact refrigerators with a capacity of 170 liters or less to 3,780 yen from 4,830 yen and that for home-use air conditioners to 2,625 yen from 3,150 yen.© JCN
