Unfortunately it is highly likely Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems will have ever increasing roles in defensive systems. There's money to be made by the military-industrial-academic complex so these weapons will continue to be improved and will become even more frightening.

They're not stopping anything.

“We are not talking about drones, where a human pilot is controlling the drone,” said Stuart Russell, professor of computer science at University of California, Berkeley.

“I am against robots for ethical reasons but I do not believe ethical arguments will win the day. I believe strategic arguments will win the day,” Russell said.

So never mind military robots, this guy is against ALL robots "for ethical reasons". Watch out, ASIMO! This guy is gunning for you!

So - Hawking is making a recommendation ... awe fiddlesticks ... whatever. He can't be Einstein ... with the the infamous letter to Roosevelt ... yawn. I think the funny thing is that this is like saying "Stop gun violence, but oh by the way ignore that millions die from heart disease". You are like WHAT ? ... huh ? ... Here is the point: Davos is pointing to the obvious, Hawking is really not saying anything we already know, and honestly drone warfare is already here. Moreover, the autonomous controls that are present in drone technology is already doing what is said that should be banned above. So - this statement by Davos is nothing but bull. The fact of the matter is this, if there is a better mousetrap for warfare, it will be developed. It is human nature. Look at history and realise that it is inevitable. Chemical warfare has been waged in the last 10 years. So if naiveté pushes you to think that this technology will NOT be developed ... I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell.

"Science will be mankind's own demise!" - Hawkings Finally this guy sees the reality!

Don't forget to thank Google and other tech giants for their involvement in the military complex!

“The question is can these machines follow the rules of war?”

there is not such a thing as "rules of war"!!! at this point there's no logic reason for humans still be clubbing each other's heads!!!!

Hello, hello, martian We're calling from the Earth We are at war, for a change (Elis Regina, 1980)

The future will be interesting, to say the least.

“It may be too late”

Heck, James Cameron warned us way back in 1984 about this, lol

If both sides have robots, it'd just be robots in the battlefield

Actually, since a very long time, there are human soldiers that behave like robots, criminal robots to be precise.

The trend these days is to use big data and machine learning algorithms to "optimize" pretty much all kinds of problems. Spam filter, early disease detection, arranging shop for maximum crowd-ability, stock market trading, etc. The results of these methods are amazingly precise, but they're devoid of human emotions, and some are actually employed to exploit our cognitive biases, thus the worries.
