Download an upgrade to your safety system to prevent dying in a crash? Sounds kinda amateur to me.

"Perfect safety is really an impossible goal," Musk said in discussing the update, which was developed over the past three to four months.

I don't know... I think I'd rather die at the hands of my own driving than rely on a machine for now, or at least until they get closer to achieving "Perfect safety".

" don't know... I think I'd rather die at the hands of my own driving than rely on a machine for now, or at least until they get closer to achieving "Perfect safety"."

It is a great comment. I think the world is moving in the wrong direction with more and more black boxes JUST at the time when humans are becoming increasingly helpless, less likely to take personal responsibility, and more likely to blame others for their problems. Your comment hits at the heart of the issue. I think reasonable people want uncomplicated things that they can fix by themselves. But that is inconvenient, and it is not where the masses are heading these days.

Ignorance is bliss. That phrase is a joke, and a warning. But what if it becomes totally true and valid at some point in the future? People will embrace ignorance someday as a lifestyle. I hope I am long dead by then.

Tahoochi: "rather die at the hands of my own driving"? I assume you would rather die at the hands of every other driver on the road also: drunk, sleeping, high, distracted, collapsed... Autopilot protects you from others, not just yourself. But if you do lose consciousness while driving, it will pull to the side of the road and stop.

%SpeedRacer5: "reasonable people want uncomplicated things that they can fix themselves." Now I understand why Apple has sold one billion iPhones! Thanks for your brilliant insight.

I think you missed the "reasonable people" part. I remember when Apple had ads that showed it fighting against BIG BROTHER. Probably before your time. Now Apple IS big brother. They take your data and do whatever they want with it. Did you read your EULA? No. A reasonable person would. I remember when a software update, if it turned your computer or device into a brick, well, you could fix it. I could anyway. Reasonable people could. I suppose you know that jailbreaking an iPhone legally allows Apple to brick it. You know that, right? Well, you must know that. If you have an iPhone, you agreed to it. Did you read your agreement? I have not met a single person yet who has read the Apple EULA. I always marvel at how people sign legally binding agreements without even reading them.

But then again. I am reasonable. 1 billion people apparently aren't. 1 billion rich educated people. At least.

But you hit the nail right on the head. Apple is a huge offender in this category, and there is no denying that people crave the kind of ignorance needed to operate an Apple device. It just works. Until it doesn't. Right? I am saying that THAT is exactly the problem. And frankly, the fact that they have sold one billion devices does not refute my point at all. People are getting lazier. People are getting less able to do things themselves. They don't even read binding legal agreements.

In Tesla's case, clearly Tesla is just not there yet. You are presenting your case as though Tesla software is ALREADY good enough for prime time. It isn't. It might protect against simple hazards, but not complex hazards. Is it better than a drunk driver? Maybe. But I don't drive drunk. So I won't be handing it my keys. Maybe someday. I don't buy the "Autopilot protects you from others" schpiel at all, and neither do insurers. It is another specious Tesla claim that is going to get somebody hurt.

5Speedracer5, thanks for the response. I confess to being an unreasonable guy who likes gadgets... sorry. But we do agree that Autopilot is still in testing mode, a point that Elon Musk always stresses. It is still 'beta' mode, and should be used with caution. Here's an article addressing that issue: https://electrek.co/2016/07/11/tesla-autopilot-beta-elon-musk-1-billion-miles-data/

A billion iPhones, and a billion miles of testing for Autopilot. Life is simple.
