This data is collected when using the 'Auto' feature where the wipers work automatically when sensing rain. Of course manually operated wipers would throw the data out, it goes without saying, surely.

Unless connecting their car to the internet is optional, I guess people don't mind that the auto-makers will know exactly where they drive, and when.
