These one-trick-pony robots are usually technology demonstrating concept prototypes, and are not meant for practical applications.
For example, this 3-point shooting robot demonstrates how a robot can recreate the tactile coordination and eye-hand calculations a human makes to shoot hoops. It is useless on its own, but shows the technology is there to be used in future applications.

Toyoto has a robot that often hits three pointers with the stated intent of making its engineers feel good about themselves.
Meanwhile, Boston Dynamics created two-wheeled robots that load multiple SKUs onto pallets, doing real work.

and their Japanese bosses will be very happy, since Boston Dynamics is own by a Japanese company.
if it was owned by Japanese then they'd be proudly displaying their tech with Japanese staff in the back ground, its based in AMerica with American staff si its fari to say it is American knowhow not Japanese that built their robot. Japan has to come to realise they don't lead the world in everything robotics

It is more like a basketball shooting machine than a robot. It can not even move around and pick up the ball itself.

Excellent. Now I don't have to worry about actually having to play basketball myself.

These type of unnecessary robots aren't needed.
Japan should make watch guard robots as many as they can and keep it all over country side and make sure they look after the place and people.

Not content with taking our jobs; they are coming for our hobbies. We are irrelevant.
(Agree the Boston Dynamics work is much more impressive, but also much scarier! Lolol.)

I always knew that robots were good for something....

Can't slam-dunk? Then WHAT is even the point

"if it was owned by Japanese then they'd be proudly displaying their tech with Japanese staff in the back ground,"
It's wholly owned by SoftBank; you can bet there's Japanese staff working there.

One of the first things i noticed about the foto was, "That's strange to see an All Black robot".
Seeing it's a basketball robot, I believe there's a hint of stereo-typing going on here.
But I could be wrong.

@gambate. Have you heard of AI. They will take over and control humans.
Ganbare Japan!
Amazing! Robots can do anything, including play baketball! In a practical use, they will take over most jobs eventually, and we can all sit back, relax and enjoy our lifestyle.
