Scalpers are a scourge that needs to be eliminated, but people who are willing to shell 850$ for a PS5 also really need to re-evaluate their lives.

It is legal to do so in the UK, just another way to make money, move on nothing to see here

And it shouldn't be, that's the whole point of this.

Do it!!! Make it illegal and start prosecuting scalpers. Make an example of the first few they prosecute and destroy these scalpers.

Ironic. Middlemen acting hurt by other middlemen.

Yeah, I have been seeing people on Facebook in Japan doing the same thing!

Yeh, you can't even buy a Nintendo Switch at regular price, and it was released 4 years ago... People still buy it though, that is the problem. Some people will buy brand stuff on sites likes mercari even when it is available cheaper on the brand's official website. Go figure.

Don't know what r u talking about..i got the switch at the standard price of 29k yen twice in japan..
MarkX
Lythegreat, you are incorrect, just up until recently the Switch was sold out all over the place, and the only place you could buy was either on Mercari or Yahoo auctions. I have heard they finally have resumed selling in traditional stores but that was only recently!
Ah_so
And if it is made illegal, it will be an illegal way to make money. And the article is about potentially making this illegal, so your post is a non-sequitar.

I bought my switches in yodabashi for the standard price on 2 separate occasions about 3 years ago(did not paid an extra yen more or less)..not sure about the ps5 now but it was definitely possible to get switches at the standard price in stores.

Yeh you could probably get it before but atm they are sold out again. A combination of Covid-19 and the monster hunter game coming out soon I guess.

Yes, that was long before the Corona virus hit and many people were forced to stay at home. Also there is a chip shortage so the producers are not able to pump out as many consoles as they want causing a shortage and then the scalpers step in.

In Japan, there was a vast jump in demand for the Switch when Animal Crossing was released. This coincided with the first wave of Covid and lots of kids being stuck inside.
For the UK, this is just further proof of the triumph of spiv-like flipping stuff for profit, the classic one of course is houses, over conventional ways of making money through hard work and/or making stuff. With Covid, the latest scam has been connected folks setting up medical supply companies to flip stuff on Alibaba to the government and NHS through non-tendered contracts.
