Terribly news for JAXA, not only because of the money invested but also because of the effort and time, I hope the developers can at least get enough information about the problems that caused the probe to be lost and take preventive measures for the next trial.

Perhaps they realised that you can't actually go to the moon ?

We've all had our mess-ups. We learn from them and keep going, getting it right.
Better luck next time, JAXA.

Keep trying!

The top national institute struggles to land a tiny spacecraft on the moon, while another nation sent mankind there 50 years ago... Indeed, it shows the decline of Japan's technological capabilities.

That's why it's called rocket science. Learn and try again, JAXA.

Perhaps instead of Cool Japan, that money could have been pumped into JAXA, and the outcome may have then been different.

So, does anyone know where this little lander is now, and where it may end up ? Perhaps if the problem can be fixed, then a landing on a different moon may be possible ?

JAXA already made history with those droid landers on the Ryuku asteroid. Japan has joined the community of space-faring nations and has made great progress. But everybody makes mistakes, space is unpredictable. Everybody has had a few 'misfire' missions but they keep on at it.
And so will Japan. Sooner or later, they're gonna get it right.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again!

Amazing this country gave up so easily on something that would have brought them unknown adulation.

Every nation has had a few misfires, but you just keep chipping away the stone. Laika's death in space led to Ham the chimp successfully coming back alive in a shielded capsule. That led to man going to space. Russians, Americans, ESA, Brits, France, India, and Japan have their successes, achievements and flub-ups. JAXA, like the others have made history and will keep on doing so. They're gonna be fine.
