I have long thought that handshakes are a bad idea for large gatherings. Crazy to shake 100s of hands in a day during flu season and the like.

When SARS was the problem many Chinese readopted the old pre communist folded hands and bow rather than the handshake.
I can understand the reluctance to attend, having been to a lot of similar events they are a perfect venue for the transmission of diseases.

The namaste is the best replacement for handshake, no issue of soft or strong handshake, equally respectfull to all.
