In the case of failure or a crash, who is responsible?

The car manufacturer? The system manufacturer? The road maker? The sensor manufacturer? The map maker? The GPS/ cloud-based positioning system manufacturer? The dealer? The information network provider?

No, it will be the driver...the poor fool who got into the box on wheels and told it to go from A to B!

Automatic cars will take some time to gain acceptance. When they do come in, it is likely to be more about driver assistance, but with the requirement that a human is able to take control at any moment.

In time the legal issues will be resolved and the self-driving car will become the norm. It may be rather sooner than we expect.

Yet another advance in technology that eventually aims to remove one of the joys of life.

And won't be viable for your average road. SMH at these people in their fantasy world.

Let me put this this way and be polite:

"Volvo says self-driving cars will react 'faster than most humans'"

This could be true about most japanese drivers.

I knew the self driving cars were coming but it seems like it's going to be a lot sooner than later. Unless of course the lawyers get involved and then who knows. I can see the whole idea getting killed by lawyers even if it turns out to save a lot of lives by reducing accidents caused by human error.

They should react faster than all humans. How not?

I been to various trade fairs that had displayed this technology and talked with sales reps at the show stating the technology had been ready for about three years now and the only thing that is keeping them back is;

Legislators

2.Insurance

3.General acceptance

They say all three are rooted to the same cause and it will take a lot more time to change that perception starting with closed circuit display within private property like at a resort or large scale school campuses.

Would trust a computer driven car any Fay over another driver. IF all The cars out on the road was driven by computers there would be no accidents and people dying in tragic accidents would more or less be null.

If the hype about self-driving cars is true and they can be shown to be safer, I don't see how the arguments like driving is fun, or we can't implement laws to determine who's liable in accidents etc. are going to fly. I mean just a 10% increase in safety would save so many lives. I bet it'd save a lot more lives than all the expensive wars on nouns such as terror, drugs etc.

Check Youtube. Pretty much accident free. Even if it were the owner's fault when the self-driving car caused the accident the risk of liability is much lower. I'll take it.

"How are automakers going to convince drivers to give up the wheel when they can't even convince many to give up the clutch and stick shift." "Yet another advance in technology that eventually aims to remove one of the joys of life." But don't worry, if you love driving you can continue to do so (there will not be a law against human driving). But almost guaranteed if you have an accident with a self-driving car it will be the human driver's fault.
