Had two friends loose high profile jobs because of a "social network". It is amazing to me that some people don't realize that employers and potential employers view these sites. Depending on what is posted you can kiss a security clearance goodbye.

Has anybody ever stopped to think, ever, that the me-me-me-ism of American society runs face first into this American desire for privacy and personal freedom?

This article was written for people who can't make the simplest of decisions. They probably read it and spend about a day wondering whether to do number 6 or number 9... what to do? What to do?

Took a day or two to research? I very much doubt that.

The only thing that I guess most people that have ever used facebook wouldnt know is that you can update your status - but the set the privacy on it so that only you can see it, which is one of the saddest things I have ever heard.

Just stick with using BBS via telnet like me and you will be fine.

just pick up the phone...it's more private and you can actually establish a relationship with someone by talking to them as opposed to constantly texting back and forth...only social misfits rely on networking sites, the rest of us can actually speak coherently in social situations

what a bunch of crotchety old... comments. Theres a lot of bennies that come with facebook. Epically living away from your home country where your family and friends still are... Ive recently connected with people who I haven`T seen in 20 years. Do I want to talk to them on the phone.. once in a while. But the occasional comment on an update or post is more like jumping into a conversation while passing by someone at a party.

I`m actually closer to a lot of people thanks to the connivence of facebook. REturning a message.. hell reading it or rereading it at your leisure can only be described as convenient, compared with writing down the important part of a phone message.. finding the note later and calling back only to have to leave your own message on THEIR answering machine.

While people do not interact in person as much to say there is less communication is to misunderstand what is going on between people on these sites.

BUT if you dont want certain info to be available to others.. dont post it, period. For sure.

Isn't "privacy on facebook" an oxymoron right up there with "government efficiency?" If you're going to post stuff on facebook you should expect that the whole world - including your mother - is going to have access to it. Anybody whining otherwise, including the EFF, really doesn't understand the concept of "social networking."

Never really found anything with Facebook, a little common sense when using facebooks goes along way, only post things that won't embarrass you and be selective about who allow to be your friends.

Ah yes, the old pretentious pseudo-intellectual attack on "social misfits". As much as picking up the phone and actually talking to someone is nice and all. Most phones are incapable of showing pictures, video's and other such things. When my best friend, who at the time was 6,000km aways, had his frist kid, I was albe to see pictures right away because he posted them on facebook(something a phone couldn't do, although he did call to tell me the news).

As well sometimes I play poker, chess, and etc. with my friends and family on facebook, as much as I would love to be able to visit them all and play games/socialize with them face to face, work and geographic locations often prevent me from seeing them as much as I would like and talking on the phone, altough always fun, never quite beats a good game of poker.

Now Dbung. I was trying to be fair. This is a journalist, and an editor had to do fact checking. The journalist had to make sure all of the features were available to all users. Third party programs, etc. I would not doubt that the writer took two or three days to produce this article.

Philly, who is crotchety? The Facebook people are the noobs. The rest of the world set up their own webpages years ago and code their own pages to be available to people with passwords, etc. They have their own blogs that they manage using PHP, or what have you. This idea that Facebook is cool and new is for people who think Microsoft invented the operating system, or who can't install LINUX. Facebook is a cute service for people who can't solve their own problems. The price of the service is advertisement and lack of privacy. Doesn't Facebook retain copyrights on anything posted there?

Good Jorb. Ah yes, the new pretentious attack on life before Facebook. When my first was born, I coded a webpage with graphics and posted it on my own site and own server. JPGs, HTML. The I used emails with the CC function to tell everybody the URL. Then I later posted WAV audio of first words, etc. This was 5 or 6 years before Facebook. Phones for video? We used to have things called digital cameras. We played poker and chess on yahoo. No advertisements. Total privacy.

So what is Facebook but a corporate grab on the privacy of people who can't do the heavy lifting for themselves? I had all of the services of Facebook before Facebook, and I had privacy too.

I just use a nickname that only my friends know. I kind of got that idea from MIXI, the Japanese version of Facebook.

Its about time for facebook to do this I use 434u dot com and they are very secure. You have to have an invite code to join. very good site not fakes like in face book and they give back the revenue they make back to the people who sign up. the The invite code system is much better becasue the person has to be approved. the code looks like this 434u dot com /invite/124828 Face book has millions of its members are fake..

I've always wondered if people use facebook to get some too.

Facebook helps me remember faces and names, happy memories, share jokes, give advice, etc. I don't play games, I don't invite or accept people I don't know and I have almost 500 people in my friends list. There are people like me who benefit from FB.
