Great. How does this help the Japanese economy?
JeffLee
Not much. He's basically collecting money from investors around the world, like the Saudis, and then diverting it into the US. And it's a huge amount money, like more than the market cap of his businesses.

Regardless what Son does to create jobs etc is infinitely more than what most people do
HopeSpringsEternal
Because Son's pursuing shareholder value. Lower Corp. tax rates, fewer regulations, lower energy costs, deep talent AI pool in US, why wouldn't you invest?
It's said that US private sector AI hardware infrastructure spending alone will exceed $1Trillion in 2025 alone!

Nobel economist Paul Krugman has an interesting take on this and trump's economic policy. Basically he's saying it's over hyped and will under deliver like many of Son's other enterprises. Further, "As news reports mostly seem to acknowledge, this appears to involve investments Son was already planning to make before the election, which he and Trump are now presenting as a response to Trump. The same thing happened in 2016," he writes.

Actually, Son Masayohi has explicitly stated (annd I listened to) and is on the record as saying that the election of Trump to president is a major reason for his investment into the US.
I would much rather listen to the words coming from the mouths of investors than critics and hearsay.
However, the elephant in the room is the fact that the investment has gone into the United States and not into Japan.
This can only be seen as an abject failure of the Japanese politicians and the attitudes and regulations in Japanese society as a whole that does not incentive investment.

Son's got smart timing, why not score some political 'curry'? Krugman's simply a partisan hack who's walking off into the sunset with ZERO relevance or legacy other than a few meaningless awards = he built NOTHING.

While the U.S. wastes more than that on wars.

More investments in the United States of America = more production of American weapons to fund more wars on a global level. Hence the boycott of any product associated with SoftBank

Yes, billionaires have the resources and ability to create a lot of jobs if they wish to do so. And just as easily, they can destroy thousands of jobs with a single stroke of a pen. We shouldn't give them a free pass for their actions just because they occasionally deign to do the former.
Son's actions show that he is more than willing to cozy up to bad actors if he thinks it will profit him, and in this case, for investments which may or may not provide a lot of good jobs, but will definitely cause significant environmental damage. It's better to be wary than grateful.

I don't know either why the big investors put all their bets into something that can't work sufficiently by intrinsics. Involved people know empirically that AI model performance plateaus after achieving about 70% task success. The correct value is derived from nature constant e, abs(ln 0.5), very close to that rule of thumb. Is at least such basic knowledge even known in these ultra big money circles?

Do you have any idea of Son's background?- He wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth, to say the least.

@dbsaiya
Paul Krugman is a darling of the NY Times. The Times is a known anti-Trump media outlet. Of course he will try to paint this big investment in a negative light.
This investment is good news for the US, however anyone wants to spin the reasoning.

So what. Son doesn’t “build” anything either. He took over Vodafone in Japan for his core phone business. He took over ARM for Softbank’s current jewel in the crown Son borrows other people’s money and for the most part, sinks into money-losing ventures. His fund is massively underperforming the NASDAQ.

It helps the Japanese economy by making money in dollars and sending it home obviously, if it happens. Trump has a history of promising big investment that turns out to be nothing. Where's that Taiwan chip plant at? Oh it ended up costing the US 3 billion and went nowhere? What about draining the swamp? Oh Trump actually ended up adding 3 trillion to the national debt, the largest in presidential history? Darn, and here we though tax cuts to the wealth was going to help, THIS TIME.
owzer
Trump asked him to double it and Son said he would try.
Ask and ye shall receive!

Why is SoftBank investing over $100 billion in U.S.?
Because some people once they hit it big once cant shake the bug. And in the investment world what better than gambling with other peoples money. At least in this case it's a bunch of uber rich billionaire's money. reason 2 who doesn't want to pay homage to his majesty Trump and his buddy Musk.

@Hercolobus haven’t you heard some “Waste” generate wealth. As they say one man’s loss is another man’s gain. What you call junk can also be a treasure to others. In this case it’s about wealth!
While the U.S. wastes more than that on wars.
TaiwanIsNotChina
It's not a waste when it throws back the russian or the Chinese.
