I'd feel a lot safer and less critical if I knew exactly what information Window 10 was sending back from my computer to its home planet, and how to stop it

You should be able to stop it by installing a firewall, although I haven't used windows for a few years, so take my comment with a bit of salt.

Some of the updates are critical safety related.

I'd feel a lot safer and less critical if I knew exactly what information Window 10 was sending back from my computer to its home planet, and how to stop it. I was also less than impressed with the update that made it impossible to log out, reboot or switch off from Windows 10. That took ages to fix.

Windows 10 is fast and stable. Some of the updates are critical safety related.

I hope the July 29 deadline for "free" upgrades means that they'll stop that annoying nag screen virus that Microsoft slipped into every Windows 7 computer. I've got Windows 10 on one desktop. It's definitely the worst Windows I've ever used, though I avoided Vista and 8, so I can't compare it with them. Personalization options have been crippled, making it impossible to get the screen colors exactly right for my eyes and work style. And I get a lot of crashes with Excel and Powerpoint, which never happened with Windows 7. Windows 7 and Office 2003 were the pinnacles of Microsoft's achievements. Everything's been downhill since then.

Win 10 is way smoother than win 8 crap.and bit better than win 7 IMHO.

It spreads like a virus.

@Disillusioned

Clone your windows7 hard drive into an external hard drive of compatible size to your internal drive.

Too late ! How I wish I'd thought of that ! I downloaded a "free version" of Windows 10 and have regretted it ever since... You're so right to stick with Windows 7 ! A lot of us agree it was/is still probably the best of all Windows !

Advice: Clone your windows7 hard drive into an external hard drive of compatible size to your internal drive. Then, take the free upgrade of windows10 onto your internal hard drive. Then swap out the windows10 drive for the windows7 drive and keep the Windows10 until you really need it. I'm sticking with windows7 because it's stable and all my software runs on it a few of my friends have upgraded and I have heard many varying and negative reports from them. However, taking the upgrade while it's free is a great idea!

look for GWX control panel by ultimate outsider. This puts a W10 icon in your tray, and when clicked you can see the current status, enable and disable blocking of W10. I use it on a W8.1 machine and so far its worked.

Otherwise the W10 .iso file is available from Microsoft and I play it in a virtual box on my Linux Mint machine. I've only used it a handful of times with ever decreasing use.

As well you can do this with OSX, play it inside a virtual machine and have a hackintosh. Lots of site online describe that on Youtube.

Windows 7 is generally considered better than 8 (tiles etc). Windows 10 will work better with mobile, but unless you have a Microsoft Surface tablet or Windows Phone (not many 1%) probably not worth it at this point. Have until July 29 to make a decision. Will all your accessories work with Win10 (printers etc) -check for drivers. Many people in Japan still use WinXP. Probably want the Win10 blocker (sf2k) and a non-Microsoft firewall to reduce the call-outs and downloads.

A friend downloaded it by mistake, hated it, and struggled to erase it.

Personally I have managed to resist it so far, despite almost daily on-screen bombardment.

spreads is apt, as it sends your personal information to Microsoft. (independently confirmed). I use Linux Mint but I have another machine with a W10 blocker running, keeping it at W8.1 .

I have W10 on a virtual machine and it runs easily. If it wasn't in constant Internet contact with Microsoft I would recommend it for Windows users, but as it stands you are now like Apple. That's the point, they wanted their userbase all with the same OS but added some "features".

If you're reasonably tech savvy go with Linux Mint. It's GUI it's fast and does everything you need. For that 1% of the time you need W10, run a virtual machine. But as I use Mint more W10 stays turned off.

"spreads"

Love it.

I hate upgrades as they usually end up affecting bookmarks and other convenient things already set up. But is Windows 10 actually better than 8?
