World’s first giant robot fight pitting America against Japan is finally here

America-based robot company MegaBots threw down the gauntlet to Japanese rival Suidobashi Heavy Industry two years ago, issuing a video challenge that left no room for negotiation. Suidobashi Heavy Industry’s CEO Kogoro Kurata bared teeth and responded with an a declaration of war, threatening to punch his opponent to scrap.

Naturally it wouldn’t be much fun if all the robots did was stand at a distance and shoot each other down. No, it has to be close-quarter melee, and the event promises to be a no-holds-barred, metal-against-metal smashfest between MegaBots’s Eagle Prime and Suidobashi’s Kuratas.

Scheduled to be held on Tuesday at 7 p.m., spectators can tune in to the super heavyweight duel live on Twitch.

Despite the apparent lack of concrete information on how the combatants have been modified for combat, we did come across one interesting tidbit on Eagle Prime.

Measuring 12 feet tall, Eagle Prime sports a claw designed for grappling and a nasty chainsaw.

Less is known about the Kuratas, but it does seem to be fairly mobile compared to its American counterpart.

Japanese netizens were a little concerned with how Suidobashi’s robot would fare:

“America is going to win this insane battle. I want to watch it.”

“Is the Kuratas even combat ready? I hope it doesn’t get scrapped in an instant.”

“Kuratas running at full speed will surely knock over Eagle Prime, no?”

“What are the rules of the duel? If it involves tag, then Kuratas will probably win.”

“Unfortunately it seems like America’s robot is way heavier than Japan’s. One hit and it’ll be crushed. I just hope that Kuratas won’t be smashed into pieces.”

While the heavier robot would probably have the upper hand in a duel, the outcome of such an epic brawl is really anyone’s guess. We’ll just have to tune in and see. Oh, and did we mention that you can actually buy your very own rideable Kuratas robot from Amazon Japan?

I thought i'd never see the beginning of the humanoid wars in my lifetime :)  , I can only think of Japan's entry being based on the fights of puny Robocon fights:  on a desk, programmed moves, complicated technique, almost zero destructive capability  VS the US machine wars or Robot Wars where there are flame- throwers, sharp grinders, smashers - employing both technique and satisfying destruction of the opponent. I'd root for Japan's Kuratas but Megabots got this one in the bag :)

Hurrah! Something for us practitioners of nonviolence to get excited about.

I hope Japan crushes the USA.

The rules vary by tournament. Limitations on weight and dimensions, bipedal only, cutting/crushing devices, etc.

In this case, it looks like the US will win an a force-over-finesse match.

It's not live! In fact, it's already happened!

People just haven't seen it yet, except for the 2 teams:

It won’t be a live event though. In a press release, MegaBots Inc, said that the duel consisted of “multiple rounds of fighting,” and that in order to give the teams time to repair their bots, the rounds were spread out over several days. This meant the fight “could not be livestreamed like a traditional sport.” The duel was held in an abandoned steel mill in Japan, with no spectators beyond the two sets of engineers. Commentary was provided by Mike Goldberg of the MMA and robotics expert Saura Naderi.

There's not many rules limitations:

Over email, MegaBots’ Gui Cavalcanti explained that the duel was fought on a knockout system, with no point scoring involved. Victory is attained by either knocking over or disabling your opponent (or, if they surrender), with the weight, power, size, and weapons of the bots “left to each individual team.” Cavalcanti adds, though, that the weapons were chosen “to not cut through metal, but instead to damage it.”

Just don't get your expectations too high:

If you’re expecting something like Pacific Rim on smaller scale (or BattleBots on a bigger one) you may be a tad disappointed. MegaBots’ Eagle Prime and Suidobashis’ Kuratas are both big bots (16 and 13 feet tall, respectively), but they’re pretty slow and have limited mobility. As robo-fights go, this is more likely to be like be like Rock ‘em Sock ‘em robots, with the two mechanical creations squaring off and exchanging blows until one is incapacitated.

Still, Rock ‘em Sock ‘em robots don’t weigh 12 tons or come equipped with 8-foot chainsaws. It’ll be worth tuning in to see what happens.

Once again Life imitates Art. Sheldon, his crew, and Kripky must have some involvement

The upper body of the Kuratas is taken straight from the Votoms anime, lower body looks ok but not so good for close combat.

Hope it will be broadcast here. Any details on the opponent's?

What a marketing triumph. "No holds bared"? BS, lots of restrictions. Robots? BS, Waldos (telemanipulators). Fight to the death?BS squared. Watch it live? BS, it is done already.Exciting? BS but maybe after editing, not too boring.

This is a Marvel event, weather they have the rights or not. Real robots, unfortunately, are not even close to this sophisticated match. But I will watch it anyway ;-)
