At the time, the only way to win against Google was, really, to ally or sell to Microsoft, which had the deep pockets to fund such a needy technology. Jerry Yang should've realized that the part of Yahoo! that Microsoft was after, was not the culture that he worked so hard to create. It was the part that never really integrated itself well into Yahoo! anyway. If he could have averted his eyes from the piles of money Search was bringing to Yahoo!, he could have reached the logical conclusion much earlier:

Back in the late 1990s, my PC friends and I used Yahoo Messenger for VOIP, which came before Skype and the others, and before anyone knew what VOIP was. It worked great. But then Yahoo bloated the client and made it more and more difficult to use. No surprise that Yahoo has fallen so hard.

Yahoo is a "struggling company"???

Now Yahoo has a good community for earthquakes. They could predict alternation Internet time, place, and the epicenter of the earthquake with the help of technology Tron http://tron.ru/2012_predictions_earthquake_Japan/. But Yahoo does not want it. I asked them, why do not you want to make a prediction of earthquakes in Japan and China? Yahoo! is silent. Maybe the new CEO wants to make services for people, not for programmers?

Do you yahoo? Does anyone?

Does anyone remember Alta Vista? Long before Google hit the scene. I still use Yahoo. They defined the Internet in the 90s when people were still using Netscape.

Yahoo stoped innovating so it left behind this is common in business

Yahoo e-mail customer services is very poor to non-existence. The majority of people go on Yahoo for e-mail and news articles (most likely to read comments made by readers). Yahoo is a directory not a search engine so that's the downsides of being a directory. With a high turnover of CEOs which reflects poor leadership and a lack of vision.

I've used Yahoo! for email since its inception, and I find it not bad (although the recent changes to the interface I don't find attractive at all). As a search engine, however, it doesn't hold a candle to Google, and never will; it's very limited by comparison, and the hits you get when searching are sometimes ridiculous.

For me, the main reason I switched over to google was the fact that yahoo's main page is a jumble of links and pictures, while google's page is very simple, and just the item I needed most: the search box.

Yahoo Email still good, I get a message of removal from this site into my mail box to go with my hangover each morning.

Yahoo Sports is very good also.

But visitors arent sticking around Yahoos services as much as they once did, depriving the company of more opportunities to sell ads - the main source of its revenue.

Here is a brief about my Yahoo e-mail. The e-mail was compromised when I logged into my account and was asked to change my password. It looked legit. Ask Yahoo to close the account on their help page when I couldn't logged on. It says 24 hours response time. Tried calling them, got an automatic voicemail which hangs up on the caller at the end of the call. They respond about 3 months later. Yahoo's answers was for me to answer the questions to id me which I already told them it was changed by the person who have accessed my account. Therefore, I don't know the answers to the questions. Yahoo told me they will no longer help me with my e-mail account anymore and cited the User Term of Agreement. For me to signed up a new id.

The mother who passed away and someone used the deceased's account to send e-mails to her daughter. Yahoo wouldn't do anything until it hit the news. Then the family was told to provide proof of the deceased.

The day Jerry turned down Microsoft @USD30/share and didn't have a plan to improve the value of Yahoos!'s stock beyond that was the day Yahoo!'s stewardship began the slow downward spiral into tech-afterthought.

What have Yahoo! brought to the table beside Hadoop?

I mean, they have good engineers but they are subservient to the marketing people --that is their problem.

I use yahoo, as my second email address and I found it consistently good. I have no complain after many years. And I am glad yahoo turned down MS, I just think yahoo is better served as an independent company, all it needs is fresh inovating ideas and it will work out just fine.

Corporate suicide pill, he wants to buy a larger stake of the company eventually as indicated. Yahoo is shrinking fast, it's going to eventually go down the same road as Excite, Lycos and Altavista.. Googles monopoly dominance and zero tolerance to privacy is another issue.

Heheh, when we first made a website, we had to manually submit it to Directory/Search engines like Webcrawler, Lycos, Yahoo, etc. to be on the directories in the proper categories. Back then, people just used directories since there weren't that many websites yet. Now people just search.

WIth the smartphone trend here in Japan, what does Yahoo! Japan plan to do with SoftBank? Smartphones now use the default Andriod browser and users can easily change the starting home page.

And the Android's voice-activated Google search is just ... amazing.
