'United by Emotion' to be Tokyo Olympic Games motto

The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) on Monday revealed the official Games motto, “United by Emotion.”

The motto emphasizes the power of sport to bring together people from diverse backgrounds of every kind and allow them to connect and celebrate in a way that reaches beyond their differences, the committee said. "The motto encapsulates the Games vision, capturing the essence of the ideas and concepts that the host city wishes to share with the world. 'United by Emotion' expresses the hope that the spectators, volunteers, and athletes from over 200 National Olympic Committees and the Refugee Olympic Team gathering in Tokyo this summer, as well as the billions watching on television and online across the globe, will come together and understand that there is more that unites than divides them.

Tokyo 2020 has also created a concept video featuring Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka to share the key messages behind the Tokyo 2020 Games Motto with the world.

The Games Motto will be displayed—in English only—in a variety of environments and applications, such as at competition venues, on city street decorations and on licensed goods. It will also feature in digital media, ensuring worldwide attention.

United by indifference, more like.

"Wash your hands" would be a much more practical motto.

Strange and ironic at the same time.

They should have just used the Rick Ocasek song title:

"Emotion In Motion"

How come "UNITED" is the motto? when the principle of Olympic games is COMPETITION ? A competition about which first world country is the best. Why not focus on the values of competitiveness?

Can someone explain it? Sounds like someone tried to translate "Ganbari masu" into something more meaningful

The best motto I could come up with was....

”Waste of Tax payers Money”

Silly slogan. Japan has always struggled with using English to communicate thoughts, ideas and phrases. Some things get lost in translation or cannot be translated and Japanese need to seek the assistance of an educated native English speaking person for important matters like a Olympic slogan.

Nice sentiments but are the Olympics still on? Seems the IOC live in a bubble where even pandemic viruses can’t penetrate....

... not strong enough, imo. emotion is not enough...

If "United by Emotion" aka herd mentality, the Tokyo Olympics under current circumstances are doomed.

They need to learn to translate things better. United by Emotion sounds like people are too emotional, which does not sound positive. Kyrgios, for example, gets pretty emotional when he's losing a tennis game -- throwing the racket on the ground, swearing at judges, and getting fined tens of thousands; doesn't unite anybody much at all.

It sounds like a direct, literal translation from some half-baked Japanese copy.

It does not sound good.

Don't they ever get anyone to check this stuff before they start spreading it around?

Sounds more like an apt slogan for some charity or disaster relief event, certainly not for sporting event like Olympics where professionals compete to win.
