How organizers hope to manage coronavirus at the Olympics

Nothing anyone can do except hoping for now, since virus can spread without social distancing. While Olympics will make people gather in one place.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

And there won't be any soaking up the atmosphere: they aren't allowed anywhere except their accommodation and competition venues, with a ban on using public transport.

Say that again.

If they are not allowed to go anywhere, why mention regarding the ban of public transportation?

This sounds familiar... oh was just like the quarantines from international arrivals in Japan. You were requested to not leave home for 14 days and not use public transportation. No penalties were in place for anyone not following the request.

Just a kind request.

Imagine being a young athlete joining the Olympics and coming to Japan for the first time.

Would a kind request without tough penalties stop you from going out and enjoying Tokyo?

Good luck controlling that Olympic organisers.

13 ( +14 / -1 )

No mention of any penalties for breaking these rules. I'm guessing there aren't any. If they were actually serious about this these rules should come with penalties people will take seriously. For athletes, instant dismissal from the games and stripping of any results. For the hangers on, large fines and instant deportation.

Athletes will be given daily saliva antigen tests, and if they come back positive or unclear, they'll have a follow-up saliva PCR test, which is more sensitive.

This is a Joke, the whole purpose of daily tests is to screen people, and for that you need to do it with the more sensitive test, if confirmation is necessary then you switch to the more specific test to eliminate false positives. Doing antigen tests first means they sacrifice safety for convenience, cases that would have been detected in the PCR can be left undetected by antigen tests, leaving the person able to transmit the disease at least for one full day.

Considering close contacts only people without masks is another irrational measure, only good if you want to detect as few of the cases as possible (like Japan is doing) but terribly bad if what you want is to contain any possible outbreak.

Lets see how many events turn out without big stars because the athletes were infected during the games, even vaccination can't prevent 100% of the infections, having unvaccinated people around means this risk increases much more.

8 ( +14 / -6 )

If at this point if they 'hope to manage' they must not be very confident in the measures they have taken. If something unhoped-for happens, will they then offer 'thoughts and prayers'.

And these guys get paid big bucks and are allowed privileges the majority of us will never have.

the push to find these resources has been controversial in Japan, given a recent surge in infections that stretched the local healthcare system.

A bit late to try to find the resources. How long has the debacle that is these games been planned, and when did they become aware the pandemic was real.

Last night on the TBS news programme Hodo1930, the infectious diseases expert from Aichi Medical University Hiroshige Mikamo said, "The J.League and NPB have been able to hold successful games with spectators because both organisations have executives who accepted responsibility, making communication with the medical experts advising them smooth and effective. When we ask who's responsible at the Olympics they recoil in horror and point the finger at someone else."

It's a total shambles and all we're hearing from the Japanese government, the JOC and the IOC is unadulterated propaganda.

12 ( +15 / -3 )

I oppose the games being held. But not having all the competitor, coaches, and offical etc vaccinated is very very stupid and showing no concern for the competitor and the real meaning of the Olympic, I can see competitors competing against themselves because the rest of the field are infected with COVID and are restricted from the event. This could happen not once but many time, making for a non events for competitor and viewers of the games If all concerned with the game are vaccinated there is no chance of this happening. The IOC do not care about the success of the game, do not care about the standard of competition, don't care about the so call dreams of the competitor of competing at their best against the world best for their country at the Olympic. Their (IOC) only concern is getting all the commutation involve in around televising the games correct. So not to impede on their contractual arrangements with the Media Companies.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Athletes will be given daily saliva antigen tests, and if they come back positive or unclear, they'll have a follow-up saliva PCR test, which is more sensitive. If that test is positive, they'll have a nasal and throat swab PCR test. A third positive result will mean the athlete is out of the Games.

What about the other, what is it, 50,000 plus "support" staff of coaches, trainers, camp-followers, and what not dignitaries?

All the BS about the athletes, but little to no information about the rest!

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Isn't the mask the person in the photo is wearing, one with an exhaust valve on the front? These do nothing to control the exhaled air.

How organizers hope to manage coronavirus at the Olympics

Simple answer - Suga has asked King Bach to ensure and manage coronavirus at Olympics (another article on JT)

7 ( +8 / -1 )

"Masks will be mandatory, even on the medal podium"

Can they remove them to bite the medals as some do?

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Didn't Abe/Suga say that the best model was to test people who have had fever 4 consecutive days? Why daily test the athletes? I guess because they're foreigners.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Duck and cover. That’s how they plan to manage these COVID games.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Rules exist but it is insufficient to scale of Olympics.

besides it is never strict unlike other events such as Australian Open.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Couple of things come to mind.

1) If an elite (read: lucrative) athlete tests positive, what are the odds that their test result will mysteriously disappear or change?

2) Interesting title: “How organizers hope to manage coronavirus”. Not “will”. Not “plan to”. “Hope to”. Very instructive.

Allowing many thousands of unvaccinated people from all around the world into Tokyo, to then move all around Japan, staying in dozens of leaky, non-quarantine hotels and venues, while thousands of Japanese people service them.

Recipe for disaster. Anyone denying this is lying.

3 ( +7 / -4 )

You’d better had managed the organizers beforehand, so that they couldn’t proceed with that super spreading event. Cancel the games, beat those ‘organizers’ their toy out of the hand , before it’s getting too late.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

New story about how things are going so far with their management . There are going to be many more unless they can manage the media better on what they report. The Olympic athletes may be at greater risk from their Japanese hosts than vice versa

You don't "manage" a virus. The virus manages you through the immune system.

Read the rest of his comments.

I said right from the start when the IOC claimed it was going to test all athletes and officials daily that it was never going to happen.

Then we are told Athletes will be tested daily the rest every 3 days or so, then we are told those non Athletes will self collect their own samples every 3 days.

Now we are told that everyone will be doing self collecting their samples and they will only get antigen testing daily.

Lowering the bar each time.

I pointed out from the start 18,000 Athletes plus 70,000 officials was the total of daily PCR test Japan as a whole could barely manage to do.

( The UK with half of Japan's population is presently doing 300,000 to 400,000 PCR tests daily)

Tokyo could barely manage 10,000 PCR tests.

So no way was the IOC going to test 18,000 Athlete every day and 70,000 officials every 3 days.

So now we have the reality,

Antigen testing!

Welcome to the smoke and mirrors Olympic bubble.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Athletes must test negative for the virus twice within 96 hours of travel, and again when they land. They'll be tested daily while in the country, and they have to leave the Olympic Village within 48 hours of their competition ending.

Somebody is lying. From right here on this site, yesterday:

7 a.m.

Time for a daily coronavirus test -- a requirement for everyone staying in the village. They will administer the saliva antigen tests themselves and then submit them for processing.

A positive result and a second positive on a more accurate PCR test means a trip to the fever clinic, a small prefab building in the centre of the village. At the clinic, a third test determines if you are out of the Games and need to isolate or go to hospital.

https://japantoday.com/category/tokyo-2020-olympics/daily-tests-cardboard-beds-24-hours-at-tokyo%27s-olympic-village#comment-2530199

So the athletes will self administer the test then. Yeah and I bet they will all do it properly and honestly. NOT!

As I wrote yesterday, the likely daily testing routine will likely go something like this:

Athlete dabs the rod into the toilet bowl for a little dip to moisten it before putting into the plastic bag and sealing it. They then hand it in to the nice lady waiting outside the room to collect the test before heading to breakfast..... The aforementioned athlete chuckles to themselves as the dig into their vegan dish and recalls random drug tests being more stringent than this, but just as easily dealt with.

Repeat 18,000 times each morning.....

Like magic, there will be zero positives among the athletes for the duration of the Olympics.

With all those restrictions and rules, who would want to come for the Olympics ? Masks and social distancing don't do anything. Short of some miracle, we will see everyone wearing masks next year and probably told to wear them forever. Instead of handing out free condoms to the participants of the Olympics, hand out free tabs of Ivermectin !

Doing antigen tests first means they sacrifice safety for convenience, cases that would have been detected in the PCR can be left undetected by antigen tests, leaving the person able to transmit the disease at least for one full day.

What you should say in a clear and concise way is the following. Based on available data, antigen tests have a sensitivity of 80.0% and specificity of 98.9% among symptomatic persons; accuracy is lower (sensitivity 41.2% and specificity 98.4%) when used for screening of asymptomatic persons.

Different data show a correct identification of COVID-19 infection in an average of 72% of people with symptoms, compared to 58% of people without symptoms. And in people who did not have COVID-19, antigen tests correctly ruled out infection in 99.5% of people with symptoms and 98.9% of people without symptoms.

The reporting by the media creates the impression that infections are not already in here and will be brought in by foreigners involved in the olympics and not vice versa, most of the foreign visitors are vaccinated and have atleast taken multiple tests before entering the country and expected to take tests frequently while here whereas most of us the locals are not vaccinated and have never taken a test. So which party really needs to be scared ? It is very evident that the athletes are the most scared even if they are vaccinated they can still be infected and test positive preventing theme from participating and throwing years of preparation and sacrifices made for this grand occasion in their sports life down the drain.

Currently, athletes are sequestered, along with attendant coaches & staff, in hotels, throughout Japan. There are myriad interactions with hotel staff and the public, let alone at training facilities.

The manufactured illusion: athletes will be contained in a bubble aka the Olympic Village. Meanwhile, the teams are strung out across Japan. Not a stratagem designed to contain the virus, especially the current delta variant which has caused infections to rise worldwide.

NOTE. This is a comparison to illustrate the folly of allowing Olympic athletes, coaches and staff from foreign countries into Japan. The virus has re-erupted in Israel, where over 60% of citizens are immunized - at a daily rate of over 450. There are less than 10 million citizens in Israel. There are over 30 million in Tokyo. The head of infectious disease in Israel has stated that no foreign visitors be allowed into Israel because that is how the delta virus has arisen in the country and the way to stop the rise in infections is to ban entry of foreigners. Which should be heeded by the JOC & IOC & LDP and the supposed leaders of Japan.

The Olympics, already are bearing the moniker of a Grand Folly.

You omitted to point out that like Japan those "visitors" that brought the Delta variant into Israel and Japan, were not visitors but returning citizens and in both countries they are still free to return.

More blaming outsiders by both countries.

The latest rulebook for athletes and sports officials is 70 pages long

I guarantee you NO ONE, not even the people who made it, read that thing.

What 70 pages? How many copies did they make of this on paper?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

What about vaccines?

Olympic officials say 85 percent of the athletes and teams staying in the Village will be vaccinated. Getting jabbed is not a requirement, but has been strongly encouraged. The anti-coronavirus rules will be the same for those taking part in the Games, whether they're vaccinated or not.

Tokyo 2020 has organized vaccinations for 38,000 officials, volunteers, local media and airport staff, among others.

Good job. 38,000 in a bubble, not everyone is vaxxed. All you need is that ONE, to start an international bubble cluster of corona cases.

Excellent job IOC/JOC.

This article doesn’t mention anything about the majority of people coming who are not athletes but people working for the media, the IOC etc. this woman has found several of those people with profiles on the dating app bumble.

With all those restrictions and rules, who would want to come for the Olympics ? Masks and social distancing don't do anything.

To avoid professional suicide? to get recognition that can lead to sponsorships? to win in a competition that is going to be easier than usual for some participants because the conditions are not the same for everybody? Reasons are many.

Masks and social distancing have a proved effect as part of the measures to lower spreading of the disease, this is scientifically proved.

What you should say in a clear and concise way is the following.

What you want to hear is not what other people should say, specially when it changes absolutely nothing of what what actually said, being correct.

Stupid Japantoday moderator editing people's post. F* you, what about about you edit that.

There are rules in the site, nobody is forcing you to write anything, in the same way that nobody forces you to read anything that supposedly cause you pain. You may believe you are above the rules, but that is no correct.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

The term only applies to people who have spent 15 minutes or more within one meter of the infected person without wearing a mask.

Finally wrote about the insane requirement to be a close contact in Japan. For the general population, it is next to impossible to qualify for a free test without being defined a close contact even if you have symptoms. You can work next to a confirmed case for 10 hours per day for a week and still not qualify

4 ( +4 / -0 )

To those who consider this a ‘super spreader’ event and are not happy with the measures taken for entry and daily management: would be nice to have a comparison with how coronavirus is going to be managed outside the Olympics. You know, where the virus and all its variants already are? The place where people have not been vaccinated? Where nobody is tested unless they are spitting lungs? The 126 million inhabitants country where trains are packed? I think it’s called the rest of Japan.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

How about the mass media?

The film crews,journalists,interviewers etc?

They are not in the ‘Olympic bubble’ are they?

What will happen?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

What will happen that is not already happening?

Film crews, journalists, interviewers : already working every weekend for football, baseball, basketball, etc. matches all over Japan, moreover with fans allowed up to 5-6,000 per match.

Are they in a bubble? Tested? Isolated when in contact with positive?

Ich don’t think so.

they hope but they didn't even control it while its in public how would they hope for anything good coming from Olympics. really sad to see how they want this badly even they know they cant do anything to control it

0 ( +0 / -0 )

An Olympian may suddenly be unable to participate because of COVID so winners may not really be winners.

i would not want to watch this anymore. It seems heartless and pretentiously compassionate. It has no regard at all for anyone but the association. It’s like being drafted -
