The Koreans can do as they please, can’t they?

20 ( +49 / -29 )

This is just another political BS between Korea and Japan.

I support Fukushima since many years with buying their very delicious 日本酒.

8 ( +45 / -37 )

I wouldn’t knowingly eat food from Fukushima either-I totally agree with them.

Concerning Fukushima, the Japanese public has been lied to many times.

I don’t care how many times the food has been tested or considered ‘safe’ by Japanese authorities.

12 ( +53 / -41 )

I think they need to let this go already. For the most part the South Korean delegation has been well behaved throughout the games. One of the most memorable moments was South Korean judo athlete Cho who was gracious in defeat, repeatedly hugging and congratulating his victorious Japanese opponent Wolf.

30 ( +44 / -14 )

Even people residing in Japan have concerns about Fukushima produce, which is generally cheaper and is often presented with the origin somewhat hidden on the box or packaging.

20 ( +47 / -27 )

Fukushima, home to the 2011 nuclear accident

「(°ヘ°)

0 ( +17 / -17 )

I have read that the South Koreans always provide their own catering, as I am sure the Japanese teams do when they are abroad. If anyone is making this a political issue it is Japan, not Korea.

12 ( +44 / -32 )

Shouldn’t be a problem. Friend working in The Hotel say a senior IOC brought their own foods, claiming “dietary restrictions”.

19 ( +39 / -20 )

All the lengths the Korean team went to are petty and pointless. One of the athletes even shared a picture of himself eating in the Olympic village with the message “It’s delicious.”

-4 ( +23 / -27 )

"Cho who was gracious in defeat, repeatedly hugging and congratulating his victorious Japanese opponent Wolf."

Only because he knows Wolf is part American?

I would love to see what he would have done were it not the case.

-28 ( +18 / -46 )

I haven't heard any Japanese doing protest in South Korea.

Koreans are doing good business in Japan which Japanese doesn't bother and even buys more Korean beauty products, buys Kpop concert tickets, merchandise, albums etc and eats Korean bbq than Yakiniku (although i prefer latter one)

This doesn't happen with Japanese business in South Korea, does it? Infact, Koreans vandalise Japanese products, restaurants in Korea, remember?

-3 ( +26 / -29 )

Childish behavior as usual from the South Koreans.

-10 ( +28 / -38 )

This country never fails give douche chills. Neverending whinging and protest and basically anything and everything to put Japan in a bad light.

0 ( +31 / -31 )

I don't think that is the reason, I think the S.K. are just trying to intimidate the Japanese.

-12 ( +18 / -30 )

Everyone has a right to choose what they want to eat. If the shoe was on the other foot Japan would have done the same. As a matter of fact the Japanese sportspeople who travel abroad for competitions also choose their own food. IOC executives have been wining an dining properly in hotels so why should athletes suffer by eating food from Fukushima which might have some level of radiation. Those who support the Japanese stance on this one, you should try eating food from Fukushima for every meal continuously for 2-3 weeks! It’s a big lie if any foreigner here commenting that they support Fukushima food can eat it continuously day and night! Nobody would be stupid enough to do so!

10 ( +32 / -22 )

Is revenge for what happen in 2018. Japan teams had brought their own food during the 2018 South korea winter games. They still remember this grudge. Many koreans reminded us about that event and say we cannot judge them for doing the same thing.

Deep inside we all know there is nothing wrong with the food. Is more about settling the debt that happen during 2018.

0 ( +17 / -17 )

They van eat what they like. The host country should not be dictating to athletes what they can and can’t eat.

10 ( +22 / -12 )

@Hiro

Is revenge for what happen in 2018

No, it's strictly about food safety.

Koreans had enough radiation data from Japanese food export to convince WTO that food import from Fukushima and its surrounding areas can be banned indefinitely.

Koreans wouldn't have been able to obtain this WTO ruling without scientific data to back their claims, namely the radiation data from food imports that's not supposed to be from Fukushima and its surrounding area that still show signs of radioactivity. Korean government explains to its people how it won WTO ruling against Japanese food import(They found lots of radioactive food samples), Japanese government do not explain to its people why it lost the WTO ruling.

This is made possible because Koreans screen 100% of food import from Japan, unlike Japanese who test random sampling.

-5 ( +16 / -21 )

Now what was the mantra we constantly keep hearing of peace, sportsmanship, the world needs the games as a show of beating covid a distraction, etc...

Why do we continue with this farce?

First the S Koreans put up a clearly political banner making some fake issue about a rarely used of seen flag, then we have players taking knees, then we have players pulling out as to not compete against another from a rival country.

Now this,

All this while the world is dealing with a pandemic and surges in case including in Japan.

-9 ( +11 / -20 )

Food catering will always be an issue in any international sporting event. Top level athletes are extremely choosy of what they eat before competitions, and most have a strict pre-game dietary routine.

During the Rio Olympics, Ussain Bolt ate nothing but 60 chicken nuggets a day from the Olympic Village McDonalds, as it was the only thing he was sure wouldn’t give him food poisoning or indigestion.

14 ( +17 / -3 )

Japan urged South Korea late last month to take action over the matter, saying that launching such a food station at a hotel near the athletes' village

Huh? So what? The athletes are not supposed to be going outside the Olympic Village anyway so what difference does it make what any private businesses does?

Let me guess, there are more athletes wandering outside the village than being "officially" reported!

6 ( +12 / -6 )

Dear Japan, nobody cares about your (fake) Fukushima feelings. Americans have their own food. Yet, we don't see you accusing them of hurting your Fukushima feelings or anything. Grow up!

5 ( +20 / -15 )

South Korea continues to ban imports of fishery products from Fukushima and nearby prefectures, more than a decade after the earthquake and tsunami disaster

Good. Takes more than 40 years to fix this. And water has leaked into the ocean. Also Japan has reputation for mislabeling products, including those from Fukushima. Happened a few times just right after the disaster and it happened locally.

-3 ( +9 / -12 )

The Koreans have a habit of pulling stunts like this.

A friend once told a group of Koreans that it was time to move on and leave the past where it belongs.

The Koreans started the "if another country had taken over your country you wouldn't think like that"

He looked at them and said " you do realise I am Irish" the blank look on their faces made it clear they had no idea what he was talking about.

So he gave them a brief but fairly accurate history of what happened to Ireland.

Their reply was " it wasn't as bad as what Japan did"

This type of stuff will continue as long as the rest of the world keeps giving Korea a platform to spread their victimization.

If the Irish and UK can get along after centuries of occupation and put their differences aside isn't it about time the Koreans get over a 35 year period.

7 ( +20 / -13 )

Let them eat whatever they want. Just don't exaggerate and overreact! We are all exposed to daily radiation from earth. The following is part of the comment of IAEA.

Radioactivity is a part of our earth - it has existed all along. Naturally occurring radioactive materials are present in its crust, the floors and walls of our homes, schools, or offices and in the food we eat and drink. There are radioactive gases in the air we breathe. Our own bodies - muscles, bones, and tissue - contain naturally occurring radioactive elements.

-4 ( +6 / -10 )

> Japan urged South Korea late last month to take action over the matter, saying that launching such a food station at a hotel near the athletes' village in Tokyo causes further reputational damage on Fukushima products…..

only NOW, Japan cares about Fukushima and helping it?

No one is buying that for one second. When’s the last time Japan helped or even mentioned restoring Fukushima?

It’s like when that kid that never plays with a certain toy for months or years, then a younger sibling or relative somehow Touches it, the elder kid loses his mind. It’s mine! Don’t touch!

That elder kid is Japan in this instance.

2 ( +10 / -8 )

The Koreans are quite correct to bring their own food.

British athlete Tom Bosworth has spoken out about the appalling food and conditions they're being subjected to in Sapporo:

The Team GB race walker Tom Bosworth has complained of the “cold slop” being served up to athletes in Sapporo and says the host city for the Tokyo Olympics distance races “feels like a prison”.

Bosworth, who will compete in the 50km race walk on Friday, made his feelings known on Twitter on Monday before deleting the tweets.

“Any chance, in the week of our race, we could get some food?” he wrote. “Like meals? Not cold slop, steamed onions or partly cooked pasta? This is the ‘pinnacle of sport.’ Sapporo feels like a prison.”

In a second tweet he added: “Welcome to the sweaty school dining hall that a lifetime of hard work gets you. Any chance you could be a little athlete focused? Any chance we could have some where to get some fresh air aside from the 900m training lap we have? A cup of coffee wouldn’t go amiss.”

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/aug/02/team-gb-tom-bosworth-says-sapporo-feels-like-prison-with-cold-slop-for-food-tokyo-olympics

Amazing what you hear when the athletes speak their minds, if only for a few seconds.

7 ( +22 / -15 )

The Olympics bring countries together in the spirit of universal brother and sisterhood!

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

Soon it will be over, they can eat whatever they want when they return, and TRUST me it is not free of contamination.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

S.Koreans doing what they do best. Be annoying.

Any other country doing this?? nope S.Korea is the crazy ex girlfriend trying to make a point towards Japan as always.

-2 ( +11 / -13 )

British athlete Tom Bosworth has spoken out about the appalling food and conditions they're being subjected to in Sapporo:

Since Sapporo is not part of the village and probably not properly monitored, it is entirely plausible that the food caterers are substandard. Most reviews from the Tokyo village say the food is great with a wide variety, however.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

appalling food and conditions

Any actual evidence for that? There’s 10’s of thousands being catered for, you point to a couple of petulant tweets from one individual who apparently isn’t happy because there isn’t a Waitrose…

-8 ( +4 / -12 )

The authorities need to realize you can't force what other people eat - they're not your school children. Remember that case when a child was forced against their will and made to drink Fukushima milk at home, despite objections from the mother?

I was under the impression most teams would prefer their athletes to eat their own food prepared by their own chefs. They're not going to risk eating something unknown.

Reasonandwisodnippon:

Stop being so petty. I myself avoid Fukushima products like the plague. That's my right.

1 ( +9 / -8 )

British athlete Tom Bosworth has spoken out about the appalling food and conditions they're being subjected to in Sapporo:

Now that is hilarious!

I mean the British are renowned worldwide for their great cuisine.

Sarcasm off.

-8 ( +8 / -16 )

Leave the Koreans alone. Eating the food you like as part of your preparation for the Olympics makes sense.

It isn't that the food isn't safe. It is just that our gut bacteria are each different. The bacteria in my stomach which makes things my body needs is prepared for my normal diet, not Japanese (or Korean) foods. For a few days, it isn't a big deal, but for 2 weeks, I've gone through total system pains where my gut bacteria was demanding the old foods.

Of course, the Koreans might be using this for political reasons too, just like Japan does for things they'd rather forget.

5 ( +12 / -7 )

Once again, Japan SO worried about what everyone else thinks they are asking people to change what they do so it better suits their image -- which they believe everyone else should believe. Let SK do what they want here. Bringing attention to it only does just that. And besides, many have said since day one forcing Fukushima products onto others to "prove" they are safe is moronic.

4 ( +14 / -10 )

myself:

Remember that case when a child was forced against their will and made to drink Fukushima milk at home, despite objections from the mother?

Typo. I meant forced to drink that radiated stuff at school, not home.

antique:

I mean the British are renowned worldwide for their great cuisine.

Well, to be honest, they have one of the best foreign cuisine because of the immigrant communities, especially Indian and Chinese.

@ReasonAndWisdomNippon

Any other country doing this??

USA.

4 ( +11 / -7 )

Japan makes this a political act by making it a pressing need to supply food from Fukushima. Who trusts the national government's standards? Their food monitoring system has been proven not to be credible in the past, after the tsunami.Japanese who travel abroad criticize local food, water supplies, in places that were not found to have unsafe levels of cesium, so why blame the Koreans?

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

I guess that’s just normal behavior for sport events of this scale and teams of that size. And by the way it is Japan that is calling attention to the issue without their (usual) interference as long as Korea is involved no one would have noticed.

Any evidence it isn't? Are you calling Tom Bosworth a liar? He doesn't mention Waitrose in his tweets, so why you should I don't know.

Well, I do actually. You want to whitewash his complaints. Why, one can only imagine.

If the South Korean Olympic squad were concerned about food safety they would have hardly commissioned a bespoke food service to vacate ingredients supposedly from Fukushima in the middle of a pandemic.

Its dumb and dumber meets Billy bonkers bell and whistles

Its politically blowing raspberries.

The South Korean government has said that it has not instructed the delegation to set up such a food service.

Oh yes they did, forget the fork tongued nonsense.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Food from Fukushima will have been checked more thoroughly than anything else you will eat.

Athletes usually travel with their own food. They often have specific diets. Changing your diet and eating something that you may never have eaten before, just before a tournament, is not wise.

The bouquets are symbolic. Complaining about them is rude and insensitive.

4 ( +9 / -5 )

Be honest, it never going to michelin starred serving tens of thousand of athletes and support staff.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I'd like to take this time to give the Jgov some advice.

When the S.Koreans want to make their own little food court and eat their own little food.

The Jgovt. should say: Go ahead. We don't care.

When the SKs want to complain about the flower gifts given at the podium.

The Jgovt. should say: S.Ks don't get one.

When the SKs allege Fukushima food is radioactive.

The Jgot. should say: (Nothing) Then add: Eat what you want.

These responses will make Japan look more dignified and the SKs even more childish. That's all it takes.

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

The South Korean and Japanese Governments have been hissing and booing at each other for decades.

Is it any surprise that the SK Government would not stoop to any amount of foul play and villainy to sour and rain on these games?

0 ( +6 / -6 )

It's natural for them not to eat such ingredients if they are not willing to take the situation in Tohoku areas into consideration showing their mercy. It was smarter for them to cover their primary purpose of establishing such facility. By doing so, they wouldn't have had such argument...

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

The delegation started providing food boxes to athletes, with the officials cooking at the hotel and instructing the Olympians not to eat meals containing ingredients from Fukushima at the athletes' village.

At least one South Korean visitor has already breached the rule, but he seemed very satisfied with the "contaminated" meal at the Village :P

radioactive bioaccumulation is a real thing, especially in children. South Korea not accepting the gas lighting on Fukushima food and products is actually good news. It will force Japanese to ask questions about their own health and safety beyond the brown paper bags of TEPCO and the LDP.

Also SK can do what it wants it's not like Japan can do anything about it

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

If the Koreans are so worried then they had better avoid anything caught in the south pacific.

The contamination from a total of 117 nuclear bomb tests is still present in just about every thing caught there.

Yeah you read right 117 nuclear bombs. This includes 105 USA tests both atmospheric and underwater, 12 UK atmospheric.

1 ( +7 / -6 )

I wouldn’t knowingly eat food from Fukushima either-I totally agree with them.

Concerning Fukushima, the Japanese public has been lied to many times.

I don’t care how many times the food has been tested or considered ‘safe’ by Japanese authorities.

Exactly.

Very impolite.

If Korea chose to disrespect Fukushima food, why come to Olympics Tokyo?

-5 ( +6 / -11 )

For those so worried about Fukushima contaminated food.

I am not pointing this out to frighten people, I am pointing it out to show most of us have been consuming seafood for decades contaminated is some way by atomic fallout from nuclear testing.

The USA conducted 105 atmospheric and underwater tests.

The UK 12 atmospheric

The French have never fully released the total but estimates between 185 and 195 41 are known to have been Atmospheric all 3 countries in the south pacific.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Avoid Fukushima food

-3 ( +6 / -9 )

Prior to the pandemic, or for example in 2019 more than 550,0000 South Koreans had visited Japan, enjoyed local food without any "radiation" warning. Why now and at the Olympics two years later? The Korean claim is illogical, inconsistent and bullying.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

These two countries truly hate each other. And like two teenage girls will never miss a chance to rub the other sides nose in it. It really is that simple.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

@Seasaw7

If Korea chose to disrespect Fukushima food, why come to Olympics Tokyo?

Because Olympics has nothing to do with Fukushima.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

This is a confirmed political harassment in Korea.

If they really think it's dangerous, why are the lunches provided to them two meals a day? Why aren't they given three meals a day? If they really think it's dangerous, why don't they announce that the daily tests show dangerous results?

In the first place, that lunch box only has a picture of the top right side dish that has been slightly replaced. Do you think you could eat that lunch box for three meals a day for days on end? More to the point, the Korean committee members actually only gave the athletes two meals a day. Everything is half-hearted because the purpose is to harass us from the beginning.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

I'm amazed at the number of hysterical tossers here. Produce from Fukushima is just as good as elsewhere in Japan. Many places are subject to rigorous quality control that other places are not, purely for political reasons. If you want to complain about food quality, complain about the abundant use of pesticides anywhere in Japan and the fact that there is little culture for organic food.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

This is a confirmed political harassment by South Korea.

If they really think they are in danger, why are they given two lunches a day? Why don't they give them three meals a day? If they really think it's dangerous, why don't they announce that the daily tests show dangerous results?

As for that lunch box, I've only seen a picture of the top right side dish that has been slightly replaced. Do you think you can spend days on end eating those same old lunch boxes for three meals a day? More to the point, the Korean committee members actually only gave the athletes two meals a day. Everything is half-baked because the goal is to harass them from the beginning.

3 ( +8 / -5 )

They can eat what they want. Stop making this political.

0 ( +7 / -7 )

Koreans are elitist always trying to make people that don’t look like them inferior. So sick of hearing about their petty nationalism.

I think most people can overlook the petty tensions between governments, and appreciate people and cultures from other countries, but not Koreans. You have 20 year olds boycotting Japanese goods because their favorite tik tok account told them to.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

I also don’t trust what japanese government is testing or checking, see Coronatests !

They can eat what they want, also lots of japanese don’t want products from Fukushima!

So japanese should blame first their own people !

0 ( +8 / -8 )

Furthermore, the equipment used by the Koreans to detect radiation is inexpensive and only measures the amount of radiation in the air. There is no way to measure the amount of radiation in food with such equipment. In other words, it is just a performance.

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

South Korea. Who cares what they eat? Concerns about Fukushima and radiated foodstuffs - not as if Fukushima did not occur. Plus, they are annoyed that radioactive water is contaminating the ocean. Since when do folks 'stand-up' for an inept JOC or LDP run government. Let alone care, one wit, about Korea.

-6 ( +4 / -10 )

Koreans think that Korea is handling the situation perfectly. That's what the Korean media is reporting.

They believe that they are eating one type of lunch box that is almost the same for every meal.

If they were handing out a wide variety of lunch boxes, Koreans would be trying to show off the variety. However, no such images have emerged. In other words, they are only handing out that one type of lunch.

It is impossible for them to keep eating such food every day, but Koreans believe everything they hear from the media.

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Oh my STH Korea is at it again. Please grow up.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

A video of a certain Korean athlete eating in a cafeteria has been leaked, and the athlete has been heavily criticized by the Korean people.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Foreigners living in Japan who support Korea's actions are of course living in Japan without any food, right?

Koreans slander not only Fukushima products, but all Japanese food as radioactive.

Even Asahi Beer, which was their most imported foreign beer, called it "radioactive beer" after the boycott began.

2 ( +9 / -7 )

Question.

What do Japantodayer foreigners living in Japan eat?

Koreans claim that all food in Japan is radioactive.

No one is eating in Japan while supporting the claims of Koreans, are they?

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Did you know that in Korea, Japanese fruits and vegetables are being grown without permission using seeds stolen from Japan?

A typical fruit that was stolen is the Shine Muscat, which Japan spent 30 years developing.

They grow it without permission and export it to foreign countries as Korean fruit.

You know where the problem is? It is Korean lies as always like the post above. Upper(2nd and the last) Trial at WTO which flipped over Initial trial ruling did neither refer to Korean data nor touch nor reverse the 1st ruling's fact-finding results that radioactive substances contained in those products from Fukushima or areas around are well below allowable standard safety level.

Do we all forget South Korea media created the word " Radioactivity- free lunch box"?

Do we all even forget South Korea had been calling for " BoyCott Radio Active Olympics!!" which banner you could see everywhere in Seoul?

Eat whatever you want, who cares! but that is not absolutely how this ridiculous intentional harmful acts had started.

Question.

What do Japantodayer foreigners living in Japan eat?

I don't really care where the food is produced or grown but my Japanese wife will not buy anything from Fukushima or the surrounding areas. She believes the government is not being totally honest with the radiation level in foods from Tohoku area.

Korea is wrong to fear that food is contaminated with radiation from Fukushima.

Japan is wrong to make a big deal out of what Korea is doing.

So, how much attention should we give this tempest in a teapot?

Any article that has " Korea " in the headline on JT no matter how trivial - right-wingers go bananas and post through the roof. Great for advertising revenue.

No, there's only people who denies the Korean lies, and the ethnic Koreans spreading those lies, and unhappy people living in Japan here at JT boards.

So is radioactive victory bouquet. You all keep dancing on the music played by Korean Media, Kyodo, and.. VANK.

I wouldn't eat food from the Chernobyl area 10 years out from the Chernobyl accident.

They are not comparable. Chernobyl was more than 10x worse and much of Fukushima's release went out over the Pacific. Fukushima produce is fine, no danger to anyone. Just a political football.

1 ( +6 / -5 )

The Japanese foreign ministry is projecting. The Korean foreign ministry cannot just dictate to a civilian organization what they should feed their members. There would have to be an actual law or regulation governing this.

I’m sure koreans are just rolling their eyes at this yet again ridiculous action on the part of the Japanese who just don’t seem to understand what actual democracy is. Given that Press freedom is much higher in Korea than in Japan it’s clear why the Japanese don’t understand how democracy or real democracy works.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

Ok well, Fukushima Is the second worst nuclear accident and history. If you can find some comfort in that go ahead.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

As I have said many times, the radiation detectors used by the Koreans are inexpensive and only measure the amount of radiation in the air.

Those measurements are completely meaningless. Even if they are meaningful, it is just a performance to show that they are measuring.

In order to detect radioactive materials in food, it is necessary to collect samples.

As I have said many times before, the equipment used by South Korea cannot measure the amount of radiation in food. It is completely meaningless. It is nothing more than a political performance.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Since the Fukushima disaster, Japan has set a standard for radioactive materials in food that is 10 times stricter than the world standard.

South Korea, on the other hand, has been pouring more cups of radioactive water into its rivers than Japan, complaining about Japan, and leaving its own standards for radioactive materials in its food unchecked. Of course, their standards are less stringent than Japan's.

In the first place, Korea is not strict about radiation, but when it comes to Japan, they suddenly raise their voice!

4 ( +6 / -2 )

They are probably getting some radioactivity in the food in South Korea already. Perhaps, having radioactivity from Fukushima added in could throw them over the threshold. It's the radioactivity that's the problem.
