show the world it can be done, Rikako!

I wonder if she is in conflict about her efforts, on one side she is showing a clear victory over disease and is not letting go of her dreams, but on the other her wins are an indirect support for the Olympic games, an event that is heavily criticized because it increases the risk of COVID-19 cases spreading and also distracts the government from putting forward stronger measures to control it (since they would interfere with the games). As an athlete she has little to worry from the infection, but as a cancer survivor she knows that for patients currently under treatment the virus can mean certain death.

Amazing comeback from an inspirational young woman!

IF the games go ahead, there wont be a dry eye in Japan as Rikako-chan lines up on those blocks. The roar will be deafening from Hokkaido to Okinawa.

@virusex lighten up. She's an athlete. Her job is tp perform the best of her ability. I'm sure she will the leave the politics up to the eggheads in suits. if the Olympics go ahead I hope she wins a gold medal and no, i won't be blaming any corona cases that result from the Olympics on her.

She is an athlete but that is not 100% of what she is as a person, you cannot completely disconnect from all the aspects of your job as if you were a robot. Athletes are affected by everything that is going around their sport, from corruption scandals to bullying or discrimination.

One thing is to leave the official declarations and open activism to other people, another completely different is to ignore completely what people in risk of death by the COVID-19 are feeling because of complicated situation with the games, It is easy to disregard the pandemic if you are not close to anybody at risk, or if you don't really care about them. But for those that cannot risk infection and can't even get vaccinated (as she was during treatment) it is not so easy to just let people increase the chances of the disease coming closer to their lives because of the Olymptic games.

So you think she should sit out the games? That’s a lot to ask. I personally couldn’t do that.

Why not just give the next few wins and medals beforehand and spare that poor one the physical public torture for that propaganda story....

The roar will be deafening from Hokkaido to Okinawa.

I highly doubt that

Good for her!

Unfortunately she won't be able to compete as the masked, cheerless games will be cancelled.

You will be looking for a long time before you find anyone who cares less about sport than I do, but I must say I am delighted to witness this amazing young woman 1) beat cancer and 2) stick one over on the decrepid, corrupt old dinosaur Mori, who had the audacity to criticise her for having the audacity to fall ill when she was required by his Olympics cash cow.

Good for you, Ikee-san, and Mori - succk it.

I never said that, just that it is completely possible she is in a difficult situation personally because of the contradiction about what the games should represent and what they actually mean for people that are in the situation were she was until recently.

That's her choice to make, I guess.

Doing or not doing anything of course, but what I am talking about is a a possible extra personal stress for being in a complicated position.

"As an athlete she has little to worry from the infection..."

Oh, really? Why are athletes immune from Coronavirus infection? What other occupations offer immunity?

Why are you going to quote something if you are not going to read it?

I wrote specifically "little", not "nothing".

She will be inoculated, as an at risk individual and vaccinated well before the Olympics. Her times will continue to improve and she should be in fine form, come July.

Wow, a downvote for respecting a cancer survivor. Thanks, LDP. Have a good time at the trough we're paying for.
