Japanese tax payer will be very happy about this.

Total mental illness is the only explanation as to why anyone would look at the financial and social mess the Tokyo Olympics have been and say " yes we would like to do the same".

A 65-year-old social studies teacher who was visiting from Tokyo said he was determined to catch a glimpse of the action. "You can't watch anything in Tokyo, so that's why I took a few days off work to come here."

Realize, this "social studies teacher" is entrusted to educate Japan's youth on social behavior.

And the government wonders why "young people" people are ignoring them...

Aahh, a teacher who travelled all the way from Tokyo to Sapporo to catch the action, not to mention all the press/media and other entourage who will also be making the trek. Get ready to joint the delta spike Sapporo.

Maybe we can still let this one slide because we already hosting it at this point. But there is no way in heaven we will accept another freaking olympic event here in Japan. You have to be very high on drugs to be still willing to host another one.

One way to permantly stop this nonsense is to convince all big companies not to sponsor any future event and the public not giving any donations anymore.

Let the people of Sapporo decide if they want to waste billions of yen on a two week international sport event or spend it on projects that would actually improve their lives. I'm guessing most will reject the multicolored rings.

Let me throw this out here. If anyone's read "Dogs and Demons" by Alex Kerr, he mentions a characteristic of the Japanese: being able to "narrow their focus", so they will see a picturesque bridge but somehow miss the tons of concrete and power lines surrounding it.

Could be that Sapporo's doing something similar: envisioning tourists and glory, and overlooking the fact that 2030 is not even ten years after Japan held an Olympics which featured several high profile resignations and withdrawals due to, inter alia, verbal gaffes, admissions of horrendous bullying, and holocaust jokes, as well as representing absolute and spineless submission to the IOC.

Sapporo will be like "yeah, but apart from that...."

The sharp increase in cases has nothing to do with the Olympics. The vast majority of those who have come are fully inoculated. The cause of the spike is due to Japanese people not being vaccinated.

Um, yesterday in Sapporo it was 32 degrees and who knows what the heat index was. 35? 36?

I intentionally watched the walking event because there was so much noise about moving it up to sapporo a few years ago because of the supposed cooler temps. Nah, those guys probably lost about 5 kilos in water weight. They looked absolutely miserable.

And I knew this was going to happen because I've been to sapporo/hokkaido several times in the summer and truthfully, it's really not cool temperature wise. It's actually quite hot and humid. But realistic peoole know this.

Anyway, all that aside, I feel sorry for the folks in sapporo who will now be taxed to death and also us people who dwell in japan because we also will be taxed again for the burden of hosting these games.

Not necessarily. I'm an Olympic hater par excellence, but I'll acknowledge that the recent increase is mainly due to governmental incompetence in getting the vaccinations out, and large swathes of Japanese society paying absolutely no attention to the continual series of states of emergency, quasi or otherwise.

I doubt the Olympics are entirely blameless, but I'm not going to lay the blame 100 per cent on them.

Even if you are drowning in debt One billion USD for one gold medal, might seem like cheap if you have a printing press running round the clock. Just like a drunk thinking another bottle won't make him any more drunk. By the way, Sapporo won't be shouldering the entire bill the central government will and in effect you and I will be paying for it.

You have got to be joking. After all the crap the IOC put Japan through, why would anyone in Japan ever want to host another Olympics?

Then again, this is the same country that will most likely vote in the LDP again this fall. Japan, please learn from your mistakes.

If you're a big famous international city Like Tokyo, Paris or LA, hosting the Olympics is a stupid waste of money because the whole world already knows you exist. But, as a resident of Sapporo, I believe that in this particular case hosting the games would be beneficial, as not many people around the world have heard of Sapporo and/or Hokkaido. It would put us firmly on the map for a generation of winter sports enthusiasts, boosting tourism for years to come.

I don't think anyone is pushing the idea that the virus is being brought in by the athletes. Go back and read the part about the guy who traveled from Tokyo to Sapporo to watch an event and multiply that by a few hundred thousand, that is the cause of the virus spike. The sheer number of people put in motion by the Olympic event spreads the virus. Athletes, volunteers, contractors, drives, support staff, VIPs, etc. etc. and the list goes on. I read an article yesterday how Symone Biles hired a private gym and hour away from the O village to practice, along with her coaches, medical personnel and staff.

In addition to the unique japanese obsessivness about zoning in on one singular minute thing, I strongly believe that the japanese use the olympics as a kind of economic primer. They know it has no long lasting effect. They know know that in order to move the economy they must build infrastructure just like in Kerr's book. Bridges to nowhere.

They know their natural economy stinks. It can't survive on it's own so they intentionally add band aide solutions to prime their economy. Kind of like CPR or life support. They add something in the hopes of of keeping the old thing living for a bit longer.

He wrote it in 2001. It would be fascinating if he wrote an updated version, looking back on the original book and seeing where Japan is now compared to where it was then.

Drop it or wait until the IOC rushes to beg for hosting (of course in much good terms for Sapporo/Japan).

In realty the bid will be very unlikely to succeed as the two Winter Games have already been organized in the Asian region in a row (Pyongchang and Beijing).

When I read the article I originally thought it was a vintage article from 1964…..

It is not the people in the host city that decide to host the Games. It is rich elites who benefit the most. The "people" are merely spoonfed nonsensically low-budget projections, stadium plans, environmental studies etc. that quickly end up in the garbage.

One thing's for sure, the next Olympics contract will have a "pandemic cancellation" clause well detailed into it.

Hokkaido has no bobsleigh track and no ski resort with a vertical drop big enough for an Olympic downhill. The facilities cost will be huge.

This is what happened to the last bobsleigh track built in Japan. It is not closed off and you can walk in if you want to do some urb-ex/haikyo viewing. Coincidentally, it is located on a road that spirals into the sky past a dam that was never built as planned.

Actually, Alex Kerr did write an "updated" version of Dogs and Demons in a way.

The original printing has several parts which are not included in later re-printings. He apparently omitted things which were actually not factual and/or made him look bad, such as his involvement with the "Chiori Project" in Shikoku as well as the neighbors he was "helping" there. I visited the Chiori house once years ago and the staff there gave me their input on the man, and it wasn't as flattering as he would probably enjoy, and apparently the neighbors he described in the book all despise him.

The "project" has now morphed into a government subsidized NPO that does little good for the area except act as a high-priced guest house operating in its own bubble (all the old "project" stuff involving revitalizing the village and helping the local people... the stuff which helped it earn the NPO status... is now gone). Its now just a place where taxpayer funds are funneled into his private hands by way of nice-sounding buzz words with little beneficial substance behind it all.... exactly the type of stuff he ranted against in his book.

So take whatever he wrote about the horrors of Japan (in whatever version you read) with a few grains of salt.

Anyone interested in winter sports probably knows about the 1972 Winter Olympics held in Sapporo and the Nagano Winter Olympics. Australians use both during their summer.

A wiser and cheaper move would be for those companies related to winter sports to advertise over a long term the benefits and pleasures of Sapporo. Much cheaper.

They can do like last time in 1972 and do it on Eniwadake but yeah the costs would be huge. Every time I hike the mountain I still wonder how in the world they did it back then. Even back then the costs must have been huge to do it there because there is nothing there. No facilities whatsoever.

Same for the Teine bobsleigh track, which you can still see the ruins of. I guess they could rebuild that one.

Just be on the look-out for an increase in size of the Dentsu Hokkaido branch office, and extra orders for brown envelopes in Sapporo stationery shops. That will tell you that they are serious about hosting the event.

However, the taint of the corruption from the Tokyo 2020 bid, and the behaviour of the IOC will take a few years to be forgotten.

The headline alone is a prime example of doublespeak.

The Winter Olympics is not such a big event. I imagine that a city like Sapporo has the required infrastructure already.

I'm sure they will come up with some fantasy plan that constructs all the required facilities on a tiny budget and in a manner that fulfills every SDG, the corporate ecowashing phrase of the day. It'll also mention the Hokkaido Shinkansen and throw in some BS about Tohoku which that train line passes through.

With respect, you fail to see the forest for the trees. That line of reasoning would only make sense if everyone else in the Kanto region - or Japan for that matter - was isolated at home. You seem not to be taking into account the millions of commuters travelling everyday in the cities' crowded rail networks, shopping, dining, going to school etc. They're the ones spreading the virus.

Simone Biles and her fully vaccinated entourage renting a gym is inconsequential in the context of the millions of displacements taking place everyday.

In philosophy this is what we call a 'false cause' logical fallacy.
