“Keep the populace in the dark” as long as possible
@Baradzed 1:37p JST Wishes
*“...these articles to be published as simple tables of distribution over the past months with stats like gender, age, reason..., *Then we could make our own conclusions with greater confidence.”
We ask daily, but can’t even get REAL numbers for COVID.
Baradzed
I wish this article to be published as a simple little table of distribution of quitters vs joiners over the past few months with some extra stats like gender, age, reason of quitting etc. Then we could make our own conclusions with greater confidence.

So how many volunteers are even left? How many of them even remember they are actually volunteers?
Mr Kipling
No problem, they won't be needed. There will be very few or probably NO foreign visitors, and reduced, spaced out seating for spectators.
bass4funk
Stick a fork in these games, they’re pretty much done.
Pukey2
I hear Mori's available for volunteer duties.
Maybe he can serve tea for the female athletes.
gogogo
Make them first in line for the vacine I'm sure you will get loads of helpers.
SandyBeachHeaven
I reminded my volunteering for the sailing part in Enoshima not due to Corona, but because they made it a heavy duty job with so many crazy rules about toilet time, lunch etc. They old people running the system wanted to make you an underling and slave and used seniority as their command of the populace wanting to volunteer. Acted like the recycling jiji at the recycling street areas.
Quite sad. Volunteers should be respected, not commanded.

What is that, a post-COVID world? Such a thing doesn’t and probably won’t exist. The only possibility for that would be implementing the NoCovid-strategy, that means a last effort of a strict and complete lockdown for the time span the virus can survive at maximum, let’s say about three months, but of course there is no sign for that in the near future or that any country is already willing to do it and of course that strategy would also include that there are no sports events.
wtfjapan
Geez, this news site is so negative about the Tokyo Olympics- why? The Games could very well be the dawn of a new, post-COVID world. Japan will embrace the Games, regardless of fake news.
nope more likely the dawn of the biggest super spreader even in history. with all the covid mutations to boot.
are the Olympics organisers going to insist every body coming to Japan are tested and or vaccinated, are all the J volunteers going to be vaccinated before the event?
The only fake news are coming from those that think that holding the Olympics will be no added risks to the J population
wtfjapan
Maybe the 1000 who quit are Mori supporters who find nothing wrong with insulting 50% of the Japanese population.
actually women make a a majority of 51.3% of the J population

Nah. Covid is so passe now. No one cares about it anymore, so that means it's gone away. /s

These volunteers will only be missed if they are needed in a very skilled volunteer position, those that are to work outside venues, near stations etc they will have too many anyway.
Please note their numbers are about 80k.... add in athletes, coaches, venue staff, MEDIA etc etc & its easy to see even if athletes are kept in a bubble, virtually all the rest of the people involved WILL NOT be in any bubble & many WILL be in proximity of athletes\coaches......
This is way beyond absurd, the games need to go & the J-govt needs to beef up vaccinations!

Tora
Well no problem since Olympics are probably going go happen without spectators anyway. The remaining volunteers will be able to mutate into spectators for much of the time.
egads man!
Those 30,000 volunteers were recruited back when the initial 80,000 Olympics volunteers were recruited, hence why the continuation of the sentence you quoted ends with:
It could be far less than 30,000 by now.
NOMINATION
So 1,000 less gaudy neon shirts and caps to print up I guess lol
virusrex
More important than regular volunteers are the medical personnel that is also supposed to volunteer their time, space and access to medical resources for the games. I would be interesting to see if they are also quitting in the same way.
1738Kwaaa!!
It seems this article was just written to name drop Mori.
"After all it's only 1% who quit"
InspectorGadget
They don't care about a drop in volunteer numbers because they aren't going to be dealing with millions of tourists for the event.
sir_bentley28
But......
I see no real loss there. So....why is this news again?
Dman
No one would volunteer during this pandemic. Olympics organizers should pay people to do it. Many are still struggling to make ends meet.
diobrando
1000? 5 or 10 000yens later for sure. They also may put the few last volunteers acting as spectators...

Chibakun
There's not going to be spectators so probably funny need them.
Uncle Benny
OK...
dbsaiya
They should run a survey on how many want refunds for venue tickets.
Aly Rustom
agree with all 3 posters here.
sakurasuki
It can affect another volunteer and during pandemic they can not replace them easily.

Today’s “Problem,...No Problem” (Same article): “A significant drop in the numbers could be another hurdle for Tokyo 2020’ ... and,...“organizers don't expect the Games will be affected, since the number is only about 1%.” -
Ricky Sanchez
I am sure more will quit..but the J-Gov't will continue to say, "The show must go on". Get ready for a MASSIVE uncontrollable Covid wave.
