Camacho-Jones was born in South Carolina and went to college at Kentucky. She was eligible to run for Puerto Rico because that's where her mom is from.

Camacho-Jones -- making her mother proud. "She wanted me to run for Puerto Rico because she never got to do it when she was younger. I wear it with pride."

I thought Puerto Rico is the US, for all practical purposes.

"I thought Puerto Rico is the US, for all practical purposes."

Certainly not.

Not a US State, its citizens cannot vote in the US. Presidential/Congressional elections.

It's an unincorporated territory controlled by the US.

Congratulations to Camacho-Jones but I also find it odd that Puerto Rico is considered a country.

Many people think Puerto Rico is a country. It’s not. It’s an unincorporated territory of the US. They are US nationals.

Sorry. My bad. Puerto Ricans are US Citizens, but Puerto Rico is part of the US.

She could have run for the US from the beginning but decided to do it for her real country, PuertoRico..

She did not sell her soul..

Good for her !!..

Latin Dignity !!..

Though she never lived in Puerto Rico, being born and raised in the US

Naomi Osaka has more claim to Japan - at least Osaka born and lived in Japan until she was 3 years old

Congratulations to the runner from Puerto Rico. It is refreshing to read a story about athletes from an imperfect nation that is nonetheless proud of her country.
