Sounds like China wants to see Japan as a guinea pig test case for their own games.

29 ( +30 / -1 )

Of course, they want. No easier way to further mass infect a neighboring rival economy.

19 ( +24 / -5 )

They just don’t want anyone boycotting their despot games.

17 ( +20 / -3 )

All the Olympic hate now, I feel, is some people trying to change Japan from the inside at an opportunistic moment and I stand against that.

I think the majority of people, including myself, like and enjoy the Olympics.

But the majority of people, including myself, think that there are more pressing concerns at the moment and are very disappointed with how grossly mismanaged and inept this whole spectacle has become.

You introduced the word ‘hate’ into the discussion.

17 ( +19 / -2 )

what do China and Bach care about human life? They probably chortled since you can't care about human rights and have awarded the Olympics to China, twice

14 ( +15 / -1 )

Well, if it does go ahead, I won't be watching and I am going in to self lockdown till the super spreader event and the aftermath is over. Got tones of instant food and the chest freezer is full, so no shopping.

Elvis is here: My bets, an announcement will be made around the beginning of June that the games will be cancelled. Ms Koike will be behind it and get elected as the first female PM this fall.

That would be a bad bet my friend. She was just on NHK and said the Olympics will 100% be on as planned. She said she backs the IOC and Suga all the way on it.

12 ( +12 / -0 )

The kiss of death.

12 ( +12 / -0 )

There is nothing good to come from these Olympics but there is a heck of a lot of risk for everyone. As a showcase of Japan it is only going to be negative. Better to be cancelled

10 ( +10 / -0 )

Japan got an exit on this one, announce it is going to boycott the Chinese games because of the human rights violations, China responds by boycotting the Tokyo games and convincing (pressuring) other countries to do the same, a few extra countries follow the trend and finally the games are no longer able to be held, there is no other option but for the IOC to cancel the whole thing and Japan can finally focus on the pandemic.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

This is not surprising, given that China will host their own Olympics next winter. However, if those Olympics don't go ahead, it won't be because of the pandemic. They managed to get it under control before last summer. This week, there were suddenly about two new cases in Hefei, a regional capital. This sparked surge testing of 60,000 people! Compare that with how the pandemic is being handled in Japan, and let that sink it. In fact, local surge testing is now common practice in many places, including Japan's neighbours, be it in the same building, block or town.

Both countries will be holding the Olympics. Am I missing something?

I think Elvis is right, at least about the cancellation.

So China and Japan are in agreement. Why does this feel weird?

6 ( +6 / -0 )

In their last news, they were against it and now? Well who is controlling and who is telling the truth but all i know is all media is rubbish when it comes to China this China that.

4 ( +8 / -4 )

dbsaiya: Exactly what I was thinking. And if it's a massive failure and Japan looks bad, all the bigger a bonus in China's eyes, no doubt.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

And why exactly is this relevant?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

If Communist China thinks the Olympics are a good idea, you know its a disaster waiting to happen.

Cancel the sick Olympic trainwreck NOW.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

That's amusing, China supports the Tokyo Olympics - the games are not for Tokyo or Japan - they are for the world. How utterly charming. The point being a rescheduling into 2022 would impact the Winter Olympics, which are not for Beijing or China - but for the entire world. Enter the dragon.

Don't know whether to Laugh or Cry! LOL

I agree completely with the above. There is no hate for Japan. Spare us the drama. It is about priorities.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Why is China doing this???.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

The reality of amateur sports festival with too many multinational stake holders. Host cities have no say but IOC. You may want to check how your home countries stand on this mess. could be the same as China as they couldn't care less about Japan's current domestic conditions.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

If the international athletes are smart, they will stay away from Japan. Just like Olympic President Bach is doing now.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

There are two sides to everything. China is so over the top...good and bad. This is where authoritarian governments can take swift action. On the other hand, if a few Uighurs are found to be associated with extremist organizations or even just having reading materials, they will be a crackdown and multiple detention centers are built in no time.

Since when have the Government of China had the People of Japan interests at heart?

China is supporting Japan in order to pressure Japan to support the Beijing Winter Olympics.

It’s interest is world domination…so of course they want diseases to spread in Japan! Just ignore them!

Its interest is in itself. They want Japan's support for the Winter Olympics in my opinion.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

China wants to see Japan get egg on their faces if the Olympics are held. The Tokyo Olympics will be a major disaster and an embarassment to Japan as well as a danger to anyone who comes there, unless they are called off for another year.

And if the Tokyo Olympics occur this year, the fallout will be so bad and that will pave the way for the Beijing Olympics in 2024 to make China appear in a more positive light.

This is political crap. China wants to see Japan look stupid and fall on its face, and if the Tokyo Olympics commence this year that's exactly what's gonna happen. And Xi and the CCP will be smiling. Count on it.

reckless:

China will have to deal with the same problem 6 months later.

China dealt with it 12 months ago.

My bets, an announcement will be made around the beginning of June that the games will be cancelled. Ms Koike will be behind it and get elected as the first female PM this fall.

She is a Governor she would have to retire her current position and then win an election to the House of Representatives. She is not going to be Prime minister.

5000+ new cases per week, just in Tokyo.

What does this mean to you?

To the IOC, it means nothing.

The incumbent Government says the same thing.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

China is looking for a number of things from every international competition. They spend many BILLIONS on sports internally.

1) Have a great showing, lots of medals. After all, Chinese athletes are paid by the state.

2) National pride. China wants to show the world that their political system, via Olympic wins as a proxy, is better than all others.

3) Vaccine politics. All the Chinese athletes will be vaccinated using Chinese made vaccines. Regardless of the true outcome, none will be tested positive for COVID during the games. If any are, it will be claimed a political result, since their SinoVac is perfect. And if it is good enough for Chinese Olympic athletes, then it is good enough for your poor country too. It is certainly cheaper than the Euro/US premium vaccines.

4) 2022 Winter Olympics is in trouble for both COVID and political reasons. The exact same issues today will have 6 months to stew and gain more pressure. They've put BILLIONS into their hosting effort already.

This virus might be the reason that all future Olympics end. Fewer and fewer cities are falling for the IOC bidding process. The costs to host are always under-estimated - often by 30%.

I'm just as happy watching annual World Championships as I am the Olympics. Actually, the quality of competitors is often higher away from the Olympics. The IOC has lost track for why they are there. As long as professional athletes are allowed to compete, the entire Olympic competition has a stain.

When the US hosts the games in a few years, the national pride will certainly be important. That is always important to the most competitive athletes. But the US University system also trains thousands of foreign Olympic-class athletes every year who go on to represent their counties. They happen to get educated and graduate debt free too - which seems like a huge win for everyone.

If they VACCINATE the Olympians and anyone related to the Olympics from their OWN COUNTRIES BEFORE ENTRY - it should be safe for both the participants and guests.

What does the CCP have to do with what happens in Japan? It’s interest is world domination…so of course they want diseases to spread in Japan! Just ignore them!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

china once again showing you cannot trust them as far as you would like to throw them!!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

China has not interest in Japan or it's people. So they just want to show to the world that they are ready. Japan is not ready but will those old men cancel the Olympics and loose face.....No way the Japanese will do this. The athletes have been training for years for this event and are naturally selfish about it otherwise you cannot reach the top. However, it is just not ethical at this moment. If the government would have roll out a fast and solid vaccin program it might have worked. But JP government failed tremendously. Furthermore, it is sad to see that the IOC has become the corrupt money making machine as it currently is. Not the people are important but sponsors and money. The IOC said that even though the majority of the people in Japan don't want the games, it would not be a reason to cancel. How ignorant can you be! I was existed to be here during the event and watch, but now I am just very disappointed.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

I could not find a Chinese source with the same content.

Do you really need help with this?

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

China paying off the corrupt scum at the IOC once again

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Well as far as the CCP is concerned, their only worry is that 2022 in Peking might be affected. They surely do not want to miss that opportunity to put on another propaganda show.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

This 2020 Olympics with the agreement of both the IOC and J Government must end now.

Both accept the financial losses.

The human coats could be incalculable.

Governor Yuriko Koike is MIA.

Rumour has it Yuriko Koike was reported darting her office in incognito, with false nose and glasses.

Common sense must prevail.

The Government of China?

Do me a favor!

Since when have the Government of China had the People of Japan interests at heart?

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

China knows the Olympics will spread the virus, and not just one variant, but all from all over the World ! Revenge upon its arch enemy from times long since past!

So, all the more reason to cancel it!
