At Any Cost” - Tokyo Olympic Organizers. Who here listens to doctors anyway?

“Holding the Games during Jul and Aug... was a serious issue even before," Haruo Ozaki, chairman, Tokyo Medical Association. “There are still high risks of heatstroke at events such as competitive walking, triathlon, & beach volleyball," even after moving the marathon & race walking, he warned.” -

There obviously will be *NO** “*SOE” for these athletes and the profiteers.

As stated earlier, another aspect of ‘human welfare’ that “will have “ 0 ” effect on the IOC & organizers of the Tokyo Olympics.”

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Idiotic timing is just another feather in the idiotic cap of the IOC.

16 ( +17 / -1 )

The heat always seems to up the crazy in people.

As much as you can, chill...

9 ( +10 / -1 )

“With many days of mild and sunny weather, this period provides an ideal climate for athletes to perform at their best.”

Outrageous lies from Tokyo's candidacy proposal some ten years ago.

Hopefully the hospitals won't be too crowded with heatstroke sufferers and there'll still be some beds available for those with coronavirus.

Hilarious, with less than two weeks to go, An”Expert” went outside and thought “it’s might hot and humid” I’d better tell reporters otherwise people won’t know.

17 ( +18 / -1 )

Are we going to see the Olympic athletes compete with masks on? Now that would be interesting. I guess swimmers would have to use snorkels with mask on top.

That's the only way I'll watch it now :)

Gotta make money for the IOC

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I wonder why the IOC didn't just google "Tokyo summer weather" before deciding on Tokyo, but given FIFA didn't do the same with Doha, I might be missing the point.

Even Amaterasu Ōmikami is calling out for them to cancel the olympics.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

NO. It isnt adding to anything. The heat should have been the first thing on the list of challenges for holding a summer olympics in Japan, because it is 100% guaranteed.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Even Amaterasu Ōmikami is calling out for them to cancel the olympics.

And even She holds no power in the face of Bach et al.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

But the city has been notorious for its stifling summer for years. The last time it hosted the Games, in 1964, the event was shifted to October to beat the heat.

why couldn't they have done that?? It would have helped them beat the heat AND buy them some time for more vaccinations.

Even Amaterasu Ōmikami is calling out for them to cancel the olympics.

And even She holds no power in the face of Bach et al.

LOL!! Brilliant!!!

The pandemic could complicate things, with rules requiring athletes to "wear a face mask at all times, except when training, competing, eating, drinking, sleeping or during interviews".

Soooo... exactly when are they supposed to wear them??

7 ( +9 / -2 )

There's a solution. Don't wear a mask! Unless asked verbally, I've been taken that approach since the beginning of this nonsense and have had no problems. Sure if it works for regular people like me, VIP's like Olympic athletes will have zero problems doing it.

Tokyo won its bid to host the Olympics, beating out rivals including Doha, in part by boasting of its "mild" weather.

I doubt it. Nobody believed that lie.

Tokyo won because it was better at bribing.

16 ( +18 / -2 )

Oh good. We’re going back to 2019 problems.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

The last time it hosted the Games, in 1964, the event was shifted to October to beat the heat.

This was also discussed but dismissed at the time of last year's postponement. They'd be regretting that now. Must had been some strong leaders back in the 60's.

13 ( +15 / -2 )

the Games have been held in places that are hotter or more humid than Tokyo, including Athens and Beijing

I can clearly see the ignorance of the author of this article regards the southern European summer.

She mentioned Athens and I think she never went there in summer.

The Mediterranean summer is completely different from the Japanese one,is hot yes but dry and with a fresh breeze that comes in the evening cooling down the temperature which makes it very comfortable.

Very unlike the hot steam of Japan,so maybe the author of this article before comparing Greece summer with the Japanese one should have done a better research.

Also to stay on track the heat plus the current situation will make this Olympics if we still want to call them so a major disaster.

13 ( +16 / -3 )

Tokyo 2020 was realized with some falsehoods such as previous PM Abe's "situation is under control" about Fukushima nuclear disaster.

One of them is fiction that Summer at Tokyo is "warm weather" and ideal climate for Olympians.

It caused this problem.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Worry not, we were told that the heat kills the virus!

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

I've been saying this from the start of Covid-19 -- people seem to have forgotten the initial fears of heatstroke, and the stupidity of the government for putting the Games in the dead of summer. This year seems like it's going to be MUCH worst than last, so on top of Covid-19 there will be the threat of serious injury and death from the heat. Some in the media will ultimately cry double-victimhood, but it was Japan's choice on ALL of it, from holding the Games, to when to hold them, and in what circumstances.

Searing heat, dripping humidity, and face masks:

"face masks"? Not a mask in sight in any of these file photos; lazy journalism which doesn't help with the credibility of the article.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

A scathing, yet ‘accurate’ observation *@Harry_Gatto 9:22am. Just 1 *year ago, almost Everyone were wearing face masks, when the threat of infection was depicted in the media as more “URGENT” and Tokyo’s Games were postponed.

*- [Searing heat, dripping humidity, and face masks] @HG 9:22am: "face masks"? Not a mask in sight in any of these file photos; lazy journalism which doesn't help with the credibility of the article[?]*

Agreed. Surely, there are some “2020 file photos” that could more support and ‘sensationalize’ this story?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

These photos are from 2019, or earlier. - The ‘cooling tent’ at the beach volleyball “test event” could be 2020 but NO signs of Koike’s “Tokyo 3 C’s” in effect so,

Tokyo has been notorious for its stifling summer for years.

The caption is correct, yet it still baffles me how many people walk around in long sleeve shirts, and without sun hats mumbling that it’s hot.

I saw a guy in a full suit and tie walking along the main road through our city center at 12:30pm yesterday. It was registering 30C on my car temp gauge and there’s no shade along the road.

On Saturday I went to the supermarket at about 1pm and there was a group of old ladies weeding the parking area. Again it was 29C. Why would you do it at that time? Is it some kind of macho show of gaman? Is it punishment? Is it just idiocy?

Most other countries I can think of that suffer extreme heat in summer have developed their cultures to take into account the stifling heat. Cooler and more relaxed clothing, lighter coloured clothing, siestas, a change to the working day, education to wear sun hats and sun cream, education to keep hydrated, a common sense culture of keeping out of the heat in the middle of the day etc etc etc.

Wear yukata to go to work. Companies - develop yukata so it resembles a uniform with the company logo or something.

Supermarkets - ask the old ladies to stop doing manual labour in the middle of the day in summer.

Business people - wear more sensible clothing.

People - sun hats, and sun cream.

Come on!! It’s flipping common sense.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

On the flip side, the heat will make for employment opportunities. There will need to be a fair number of people to follow Lords Bach and Coates around, fanning them with traditional Japanese fans (while at no time making eye contact with them), making sure there is always a pitcher of cool beer available, and making sure they get to their air-conditioned cars and offices unmolested by the plebeians.

Meanwhile, the All Stars baseball game is being held right now with a packed stadium in Atlanta, which is not exactly known for its cool, dry summers.

See what's possible when a vaccination plan like Trump's is implemented?

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Not sure why anybody is bringing up the risk of heat strokes now...it's not like people didn't have concerns about this a long time ago. And when you add in the new risk of the virus, only an imbecile would STILL try to have the Olympics this summer.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I was under the impression that all the athletes at the Olympic will be masked but maybe not pool sports.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

If only the organizers knew about summers in Japan ne.

Really some people should just harden up it’s not even hot it is very pleasant on the shores of the bay. Stop living constantly with your AC. Can you all harden up just a little bit your softness is showing

The MLB All Star game is in Denver this year.

Yup. Add to this all kinds of schools (from kindergarten up to high schools), who force children & students to have their PE classes outdoors in the heat, right under the scorching sun. There have been several cases where kids have died at school because of heat exhaustion.

Where I'm from, outdoor PE classes are cancelled ( moved indoors) when the temperature goes below -20c. I don't understand why Japan doesn't implement the same, for example when the temperature goes above +27c or so.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

I below 40c is warm 40-45c is getting hot 45c hot get in the shade or go for a swim. Below 20c is getting cold, 10c cold 10c - 0c really cold under 0c freezing. How would 29 c be overly hot as person mention, when you body temp always runs around 37-38c if you are feeling overly hot on day when it is mild 27c you need to move to a different climate. Why live in place when 4 months of the year is constantly of 27c and constantly wine and complain.

Buy a Garigari Kun soda flavored popsicle to beat the hot days.

When dudes from Africa visit and say Japan summers are hot, I think that means Japan summers are pretty hot.

I hope everyone stays safe during the heat, and drinks lot of Aquarius.

Organizers have moved the Olympic marathon and race walks to the northern island of Hokkaido, hoping to outrun temperatures that can hit 37 degrees Celsius and humidity over 80 percent.

Weather forecasts for Sapporo and Tokyo from the 23rd until the 31st of July only differ by about 2 degrees as of today. Don't the fax machines in JOC's offices pick up AccuWeather?

And don’t do any any unnecessary exercise in the heat..
