Someone stared at you in your bathing suit = "I'm a victim"? Good grief.

Sad for her and a loss for Australia.

This needs to be clarified as soon as possible, if there is some kind of abuse it should be stopped cold with clear accusations, investigation and punishment of the people found guilty. Vague accusations will end up hurting only her without any serious consequences to the apparent abusers, and if there are other victims this would only discourage them from coming up. If the opposite is true and the situation is not as she is describing it that still requires an investigation to clear it up.

Abuse, both mental and physical, is an unfortunate part (albeit maybe not a major one) of sports where men have some form of power or control over young sportswomen.

What exactly is she talking about?

10 ( +12 / -2 )

If your body is on show, I'm looking. It is that simple.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

I don't understand what she is saying? What seems to the be the problem? Who is she talking about?

6 ( +9 / -3 )

This seems to be the age of "I'm so offended,' when people are offended by a pronoun, or even a glance or stare as in this case.

For heaven's sake, some creep looks at her when she is nearly naked and she is mortally offended. Offended enough to give up her sport.

Sport is about being strong, not about wearing your heart on your sleeve!

6 ( +9 / -3 )

She can freely do what she decides to do obviously but there should be a better way for her to fight this.

This way is a loss for her and Australia.

She should file formal complaints/charges and continue to compete.

She's not working for whoever it was, she's doing it for herself and country

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Her fears may be warranted. Wasn’t there a recent case of downloaded, altering & selling images of ‘clothed athletes’ with attachef words of ‘sexual imagery’ to them?

Attractive people get looked at. It is a burden we have to bare.

It's an obligation, a duty.

"I'm going to choose to excel in a sport which involves me showing off large portions of my well-toned physique"

"That man looked at me! He is clearly a serial rapist!"

Swimming, Gymnastics and even athletics are sports where athletes are vulnerable.

Whether it is taking voyeuristic pictures or downright sexual harassment , it is plain wrong.

Rather than make fun of someone who obviously has had a bad experience how about some empathy?

This sounds like something from a comedy sketch. However this type of complaint is not unusual these days. In the UK you can report someone staring at you as a hate crime even though it’s not a crime.

As someone who is always seeking evidence for claims being made on this site, I’m sure you can direct us to evidence of your claim.

The hate crime stuff in U.K. is well known so can easily be found

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

A link to the IOC’s President’s statements is removed if you post it?

A link to a news site reporting on staring-as-hate-crime is removed if you post it?

Excuse me if I’m having trouble believing you.

"He GROPED ME!!! (with his eyes). I 'think' this was after some counseling, but of course, I'm just making this part up..."

"How DARE that man...APOLOGIZE to me? 'Probably' had to be told to do it first. Of course I'm just making this part up, but you HAVE to believe me when I claim..."

The only "exploiting" and "gaslighting" I see is an Olympic champion exploiting her social media account with unnamed attacks on "men". Oh well. Time's UP? Enjoy the Olympics from the safe sidelines, and NO LOOKING AT HER, MEN!!!

This is becoming very common, if the police or anyone doubts what a woman or minority person says they are called a misogynist or a racist.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

I'm rooting for her.

A profesional cannot behave like a hentai at work.

Not while wearing the IOC staff uniform.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

People saying why would she lie? Some do, some for attention some through mental illness. These things happen sadly in this world. She may be telling the truth about staring, then find another profession, people stare all the time.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

why would she lie? Some do, some for attention some through mental illness.

she's not lying. Why would she?

She's an Olympic swimmer, not some girl looking for attention.

sadly life is not that simple. People can be attention seekers, mentally ill or deluded in any profession. We should never dismiss accusations but always make sure any evidence against an accuser is true. The facts are the majority of female swimmers encounter no problems like this but this woman has many problems, read into that what you will.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

The hentai guy accepted responsibility and apologized once. obviously he was aware he was doing something wrong.

Blaming the girl for dressing too sexy, or being provocative is what sexual offenders do.

This is Australia's ABC's report on the issue:

Hope you are no referring to ,y posts, I have not mentioned sexy clothes or provocative behaviour. From analysing her tweet she actually seems to be quite unstable, full of rage and not in control of her emotions. She could be unwell, telling the truth or be a troublemaker. Let’s see if she has any allegations that hold water.

Read the article. Seems like at present she has presented no evidence and no witnesses and no others complaining of these incidents. Let’s hope she doesn’t have mental health issues that may ruin her life.

Time’s UP

It is indeed. Time to start looking for a day job, I guess?

I read the article.

Comments like these make the situation worse or perhaps even lead to conspiracy theories.

...and again, and again.

Many posters have thus far shown much higher doubt regarding her claims than I have yet you continue to bash me for looking at the situation in an objective manner.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Not objective, ffs.

You keep suggesting she has mental issues, she's hysterical, and that she's a troublemaker.

No. Not objective at all.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

its just too much misogyny in the Tokyo Olympics:

President Mori and his pejorative remarks against women, then his substitute being a sexual offender, then they try to make Naomi Watanabe dress like a pig, and now yet another offense against women.

...what's gonna be next?

I suggested she has mental health issues, a troublemaker or telling the truth.I’m not interested in believing anything unsubstantiated, if she provides evidence and or others back her up, i will be on her side 100%

An array of incredibly, at best, tone deaf comments. The article is an indicator and there is evident testimony available, far and wide, if you examine abuse in sport. Abuse in Australian swimming has been an ongoing problem. The vapid commentary is beyond ignorant and ignores the obvious facts of abuse present throughout the world in sport, much of the commentary is genuinely misogynist.

The exploitation of young athletes is rampant in sport.

For a good example, look at collegiate football. Jerry Sandusky.

Women's gymnastics, USA: John Geddert. Larry Nassar.

Australian swimming: Scott Volkers. Paul Frost.

Which is just to name a few.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Richard

These few worldwide examples may prove that but we cannot just believe allegations and pint fingers without evidence

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Young girls in leotards and swimming costumes?

Middle aged coaches?

Lots of things to go wrong...

Thanks for posting this link, looks likely she may be a trouble young woman and this is a cry for help, let’s see

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

In December, Groves wrote on social media that she had made a complaint a few years ago about a man in swimming who stared at her in her swimsuit and made her feel uncomfortable.

Nothing illegal there.

She also wrote that a "well known coach" had made a "creepy comment" to her and apologized 15 minutes later, "possibly because the team psych told him to".

Without knowing the exact comment, tone of the comment, and situation, we cannot know if this is or isn't sexual harassment. It could have been meant as a joke, but someone sensitive about everything could mistake it and that could easily be why the coach apologized 15 minutes later, after it was clear she took the comment differently than intended.

What see saw as a creepy comment could easily have been meant to relax her after a hard workout.

When spending hours daily with someone, humans will relax a little and say things they wouldn't say to a stranger. The risk is that being overly familiar when the other person doesn't see you the same way can backfire, like happened here.
