This excuse will deflect attention from the number of countries that will choose not to come anyway and other shortcomings: “Special,.island,.country,.culture,.3rd largest economy” and “last of the G7 countries to vaccinate’.

It will be profoundly racist to ban foreign national from coming to watch the Olympic Games. If conditions are not ripe for the Games to be held, scrap it. Cancel the damned thing. It is morally wrong to ask the world to come perform for the entertainment of the Japanese but say we are sorry , you are not allowed to come and watch.

This is pathetic. Japan is way behind even Zimbabwe.

Didn't they have some kind of big international event they were supposed to be preparing for?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

So they're going to obviously allow Japanese nationals back -- same people who brought the Brazil and England variants of the virus through the same manner -- and they've already decided they're going to lift the SOE before the Games regardless of the number of infections. Yup, sounds like, as usual, safety is the priority here. No doubt Bach and the other IOC members are busy drafting up documents that will put NONE of the blame for what happens on them.

and Look where Japan ranks in terms of deaths.

Yeah, pretty close to the worst in the region.

Tokyo 2022!

I thought they were not going to happen.

It's very fortunate that all Japanese residents will be vaccinated by then..... that's a relief

and The EU is going abide by contracts....that's more of a relief.

Look at where Japan ranks. Rapid vaccination was the best Olympic preparation it could have prioritized.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

As long as they are tested 24hrs before departure, immediately tested on arrival, placed in two week personally paid, government quarantine, with security guards, tested negative twice before leaving quarantine...they are perfectly welcome.

Otherwise, they should be charged with manslaughter if they bring SARS-CoV-2.

Sorry, typo in my last post. I should have said "Dentsu and the Yaks get their money".

This isn't about sport. It isn't about bringing people together. It certainly isn't about saving the economy, as it's a guaranteed financial disaster.

It's about getting as much of our tax money into the pockets of the well-connected as those pockets can handle. And those are some big deep pockets, people.

This is a heist. In broad daylight. And we all have to pretend it's valid.

Well, eff that. The Olympics is organised crime. Stop it.

Of course it's all about the politics and economy. I mean if holding the Olympics will boost GDP. Without fans will definitely still be a blow as ticket sells make up a large portion of revenue. How about our taxpayers' money? Shouldn't the Japanese government already sent out another stimulus? Let me not forget the mighty Dentsu who got more taxpayers' money. With all the vaccination program debacles going on worldwide, will everyone be vaccinated in time? Or is the fear mongering of a 4th wave upon us? smh

Japan plans to cap the number of daily arrivals into the country at around 2,000 and allow exceptions to the ban on international travelers after the COVID-19 state of emergency is lifted in Tokyo ahead of the Olympics, Nikkei reported on Monday.

I'll do very rough and simple math. There are at least 6 international airports (just counting those classified as First-class) in Japan. 24 "Second-class". And numerous third-class. So at least 6 are capable of international travel. 2000 people a day makes it about 333 people per airport. Let's take ordinary AirbusA350-900. It seats up to 369 souls. Sure, not all passengers on board will be foreigners, some will be JP citizens. But you get the numbers..

Do they really mean just one plane per day per airport? Even if it was limit only for Tokyo, it's 6 aircrafts only.

Not sure, if they really thought this through.. They want Olympics to happen, they are obviously expecting people to watch and visit (=profit, cash), but on the other hand THIS.

I'd really, really like to meet the person, who makes always such stupid decisions in our government, in real. Just shake hands and be blown away.

More propaganda to convince the people that it is a great idea to go ahead with this event.

Not only it is common sense that it should be cancelled for health reasons, but also 80% of the japanese people are against.

When will this government listen to its people instead of focusing solely in the big companies interests?

9 ( +9 / -0 )

how do they control this, will they turn away citizens and foreigners with permanent residence status?

They've done if before with PRs. I wouldn't put anything past the Japanese authorities. They can be just as devious as the mainland Chinese authorities.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Memoryfix - hear hear.

This country, which I love, and chose to make my home, has been held hostage by the Olympic boondoggle for over seven years.

The only plus was the specious propaganda that the games would save our economy - the same lie they told us for the 2002 world cup (which was also going to end Japan-Korea tensions forever).

Now they insist on ploughing on with this nonsense in the certain knowledge that it will lose trillions, and to make it so we have to keep the figures artificially low by not enjoying hanami.

Meanwhile, the gerontocrat government can't even reach last place in vaccinations without excess paperwork.

Our grandchildren yet unborn will be paying for this shambles.

But Dentsu and the take get their money, and that's all that counts.

12 ( +12 / -0 )

Lot of unanswered questions here.

how do they control this, will they turn away citizens and foreigners with permanent residence status? That seems absurd.

Japan’s whole attitude of holding the Olympics at any cost is ridiculous

can’t wait for these cursed Games to be over so the IOC can stop controlling Japan’s government and we can all get back to a normal existence.

15 ( +15 / -0 )

Hmm, a cap would mean everyone entering Japan for the Olympics is potentially displacing someone who would enter Japan for another reason, a local returning from a business trip, a guest worker, a student, or someone who has been away on urgent family business.

You can argue for or against the Olympics, but it should not be subtracting from other areas of life in Japan. A 2,000 cap and the 70,000 for the Olympics number in the article would mean nobody else for over a month.

17 ( +17 / -0 )

This Olympics is going to be a lot of fun! NOT!

7 ( +9 / -2 )

I don't think there are any meaning to persist in forcing through organize Olympic games with taking risk of resurgence of COVID .
