“The IOC is working at full speed together with our Japanese partners and friends to make the postponed Olympic Games a safe manifestation of peace, solidarity and resilience of humankind in overcoming the pandemic."

uhmm ... cut the crap - we haven’t overcome the pandemic.

Yes, and I'm the new emperor of China!

No foreign spectators, maybe not that many foreign competitors, ......

Bach is also living in another world.

24 ( +26 / -2 )

Thomas Bach promised ... that a decision on allowing foreign spectators would be taken "as early as possible".

Didn't Japan just announce yesterday that there would be none??

uhmm ... cut the crap - we haven’t overcome the pandemic.

That's all Bach has recycled from Day 1- Crap.

Bach is also living in another world.

No not at all. He knows what he is doing. He is just a corrupt unethical bucket of slime who doesn't care about the people of this country. Same as the LDP. No wonder they all get along so well.

The countdown to the Olympics, as well as the end of the pandemic, is here!

Vaccinations are being rolled out quickly in the U.S. (thank you President Trump). The rest of the world is not far behind.

It would be great to see packed, excited venues, and Mr. Bach seems to have an open mind, which is refreshing. What a contrast that would be to the constant "doom and gloom" we've had to see everyday for the past year.

no one asked him about the Uighars? Feckless media.

Vaccinations are being rolled out quickly in the U.S. (thank you President Trump)

All the drug companies have stated that Trump did nothing to speed up development of the vaccine. The Trump cult still has a few death spasms left I see. Swallowing lies like 2yr olds.

What good would it do Simon? He doesn't care. This is a man with NO moral compass. NONE

"Bach, 67, received unanimous backing in the election for IOC president in which he was the sole candidate, with 93 of the 94 valid votes from IOC members in favor of his re-election."

I see the IOC is following the China election model. Real easy to win as the sole guy on the ballot.

Jen Psaki, the White House Press Sec. repeated to a reporter yesterday that the US is not decided whether the US will be participating. She says Biden has said it depends on CDC guidance 6 weeks before, and how Japan's numbers look.

Justin Trudeau PM of Canada has told Suga "We'll see where we are at the end of May."

Australia is uncommitted as well.

So Bach can say whatever he wants, the actual deciders haven't decided yet.

25 ( +26 / -1 )

Wow, I skipped the part where Bach got his doctorate in virology so he had a hint of authority to say this.

20 ( +21 / -1 )

"Tokyo remains the best prepared Olympic city ever and at this moment, we have no reason to doubt that the opening ceremony will take place on July 23," Bach said.

I wonder what he is smoking up there to make such a comment...lmao!

This person is also smoking something strong!

The daily “Olympics will happen” brainwash.

Lets see how many countries feel comfortable sending their athletes to a place that never controlled the pandemic, either by testing or vaccinating.

SAFE SECURE & A TOTOAL BORE. Go for it! : ^ 0

He's Baching mad

Maybe he should read the latest research about the the new variants.

A study published on Wednesday in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) says that the B117 variant, often referred to as the ‘British’ or ‘Kent’ strain, is 30-100 percent more deadly than other Covid-19 variants in circulation.

As a virus expert, he should also know that this variant, the Brazilian and Indian one transmit twice as fast. They come from overseas. So do Olympic staff, media, athletes, support crews and spectators!

Don't get me started on vaccines...

basically, he needs to be audited and his tax records made public.

13 ( +14 / -1 )

Tell that to the brazilian variant, Bach.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

No foreign spectators Mr Bach.

Safe and secure...

"Re-elected Bach promises 'safe, secure' Tokyo Olympics."

My Mum told me never to make promises you cannot keep.

14 ( +14 / -0 )

It would have helped if various countries took the Covid 19 more seriously and listened to the medical health experts. Instead we have certain government leaders from nations telling the people to stop whining or the disease will miraculously disappear. Go about your business without protections like wearing masks, social distancing, and sanitizing/washing frequently. Very sad.

Newly re-elected International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach promised Wednesday to deliver a "safe, secure" Tokyo Olympics this year

Well, he did not mention safe for whom. Maybe safe for all the foreigners who will be comming. Because they will likely not be comming. I see what you did there

11 ( +11 / -0 )

I see the IOC is following the China election model. Real easy to win as the sole guy on the ballot.

Absolutely !

This is very good news. However, this is the part that scares me:

Justin Trudeau PM of Canada has told Suga "We'll see where we are at the end of May."

Now expect the testing here to drop to ABISMAL numbers for the next 2 months just so that they can dupe the leaders trying to be responsible and do the right thing into coming. That's my worry.

And then, what happens to Japan's reputation when many of these Athletes come back with the Tokyo (YES I said it) strain?

The J gov has not thought this through at all (no surprise there)

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Much to the dismay of the majority of JT readers, the games are happening folks. As to the polls regarding support or lack thereof from the population, watch that too change on a dime, real quick , once the excitement starts to be felt.

again, i have never been more ashamed to work in this business. The press is running away from me and refuses to publish my arguments for 2022 Games.

if the Games are held in 2021 i will close my business and never work in sports marketing again. And you can hold me to that.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

I'll take protecting lives over some stupid sporting events like the Tokyo Olympics.

It's not wanted (at least for now).

GO AWAY, BACH.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Sick of this guy's self-serving lies... Send him back from whence he came.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

You should all note that the 93 people who voted for Bach are not ignorant people and them voting to keep Bach in says that replacing him with one of the 93 would be a pointless change of name only.

it is clear who is successor will be. It is a bit like the Putin-Medvedev chair dance.

I guess, but I am not sure, the one abstention was Bach not able to vote for himself which as a gentlemen he is, he would never even think of doing.

@Aly Rustom

World leaders aren't going to be duped by infection rates that are made to look low. They'll look at the number of people being tested. If it isn't in the tens of thousands every day, they'll know the numbers are being manipulated.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

"Tokyo remains the best prepared Olympic city ever and at this moment, we have no reason to doubt that the opening ceremony will take place on July 23," Bach said. "The question is not whether, the question is how these Olympic Games will take place.

I'm sorry but how ridiculous. They weren't responsible last year either, had to have the athletes pull out immediately following a tone deaf speech Bach made, just like this one. Then Canada pulled out, USA, Australia, then others followed.

Also China Olympic boycott just grows and grows. HIs support of a regime with concentration camps is appalling.

Olympic Money is all this group stands for

Bach, 67, received unanimous backing in the election for IOC president in which he was the sole candidate, with 93 of the 94 valid votes from IOC members in favor of his re-election.

Remarkable. That's an election Kim Jong Un would be proud of. But how does 93/94 equal unanimous? Surely one dissenting vote means it's not unanimous?

Tokyo remains the best prepared Olympic city ever

Oh behave. Japan sits way beyond Guyana and Zimbabwe in the vaccination rollout. Define "prepared"? Ploughing on into an unaffordable shambles, in weather which we knew was dangerously hot before the bid was even announced, where the JOC chair has had to be replaced because not even normally-shoganai-minded Japanese voters couldn't tolerate his bigotry any more, and where vaccination has hardly begun and testing never even started during the worst pandemic of 100 years?

That's not preparedness. That's being blinded from reality by the dollar signs in the eyes of those select few who get their hands into the taxpayer pockets for the next two generations.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Didn't Japan just announce yesterday that there would be none??

"The government and the Japanese organizing committee of the games are expected to hold a remote meeting with the International Olympic Committee and two other bodies possibly next week to make a formal decision on the issue of overseas visitors."

Do You all not read?

An offshore tax haven in the Bahamas probably?

If ONLY Kanta! If only!

We can already see from various news sources that Japan is held up as a country which has done well in the pandemic- often compared with SK and some of the other successful countries in Asia, and yet its abismal testing is never mentioned.
