I wonder how many of the 80% of Japanese who are against holding the Olympics will attend?
Asiaman7
When are fans ever needed in the stands?
Aly Rustom
good to see the Kamikaze culture is still running strong. Holding the Olympics now is exactly what that is
snowymountainhell
Their family and friends?
snowymountainhell
How ‘bout just CGI’ing the fans into the televised broadcasts?
Japan’s good a ‘fudging’ the numbers, anyway.
Tora
When you want to paint a picture of normality to the world and show that nothing is wrong. It's all about perceptions. This is a national trait.
Arrrgh-Type
It seems that the government isn't even trying to care at this point. So much time, money and resources have been spent on the Olympics instead of pandemic response, and now it seems that they are actively trying to make the situation worse. What a shame.

If you MUST continue with this idiotic event:
Fill the stands with vaccinated elderly. It will showcase Japan is an aging country, and promote the idea of vaccination. It will be an hilarious and grotesque spectacle...but hey, it will be anyway.
gogogo
Allow only vaccinated people see how that goes.
Darius
Only the ''upper class'' of course, that have connections to the committee.
Tom Doley
Why does Japan keep backtracking on all their policies? These wishy washy messages are part of Japan's problem.
lolwut
Headline typo: Gov't, organizers inclined to allow themselves to make more money.
as_the_crow_flies
Inclined, as in how far would you like us to bend, and shall we jump at the same time?
rainyday
Just when you thought the IOC and government couldn’t possibly be more out of touch with reality they always find a way to one up themselves.
Kanta
"Some spectators"
Let's see. Dentsu executives. Deep-pocketed LDP donors. Relatives and friends of top politicians. All of whom have probably skipped the line and are vaccinated.
Who else might be on the list of very special and important people?
ian
Other sports events/venues allow fans so it will be the same for Olympics
Alfie Noakes
Olympic athletes are now being asked to sign documents that are basically "waivers" which say athletes "will not pursue any kind of legal recourse against the International Committee, the Tokyo organisers or anyone." As Jules Boykoff explained on Canadian TV, all the risk is being put on the shoulders of the athletes.
Second vid down:

This is unreal.
Goodlucktoyou
Poppycock. Tickets will be given free to LDP and Nippon Kaigi members and their friends and family.
Kinda like what will happen after the athletes vacant the prestigious Olympic Village apartments.
Sam Watters
This might be the best summary of the situation. The current government probably knows that they will soon face a massive backlash from the public so they might as well get what they can while they can get it.
starpunk
This is a castrophe in waiting and it could also be political suicide for Suga and his cabinet. A medical emergency is in effect and trying to hold the Olympics right now is an oxymoron and a recipe for disaster. This is stupid.

The decision whether to allow spectators will be made with the safety of everyone as a top priority. The government had taken into account the sporting events that allow limited spectators since Covid and shall make their final decision shortly. Having seen that events have been allowing limited spectators worldwide without a problem, it is almost a certainty that this will be the case for the Olympics.
With the most stringent safety policies imaginable the crowd will be allowed to provide the athletes and the television audience of millions to enjoy the spectacle. The IOC and the Japanese government have taken advise from the worlds leading experts to ensure these events will be totally safe.
let us now look forward to in anticipation the worlds premium sporting event. Whether in our armchairs at home or those lucky enough to attend, we can all relax and enjoy the wonder of the Olympics.
theResident
As pointed out, other sports are allowing a small amount if spectators in. What’s the difference.
Good to see that most if you are now beginning to accept the Olympics are going ahead!
Start booking those isolated mountain cabins if you don’t want to be in Tokyo.
This is going such a great TV event. Prime those 4K TV’s , get your NHK subs paid and those VPNs wired up!

Great, informative post
I agree, if a minority of ill informed wish to hate on the games then they should ignore them. Allow us who wish to get on with normal life to enjoy ourselves, whilst taking all precautions naturally.
Commodore Perry
Isn't a large percentage of foreign athletes going to be vaccinated?
I'm more aghast that trains and subway are allowed to function.
Goodlucktoyou
They say they will force them but many are resisting. Also it takes up to four weeks for the vaccines to reach full effectiveness, and vaccinated people are still carriers and potential spreaders.
Commodore Perry
If they are not vaccinated and if they will not be kept completely away from the general population here, then don't let them in.
Tokyo does not have to play a part in making that decision--it is for the central govt. Who we know will not take such action.
Antiquesaving
We will not actually know, as it is by the organizers own admission the personal choice of each athlete, official, etc...
So of the over 100,000 we will promptly never know.
Having now also been told that only the Athletes and a certain few officials are now the only ones that will be tested daily and the vast majority only occasionally.
Means that if the public is let in they will be in contact with people not being tested regularly as was promised.
More backtracking more lies by the IOC and JOC

Many are concerned about the games and that is taken into account by the IOC and the government. This is why work has been going on tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure they are the safest games ever. The precautions being taken are incredible. Taken into account has been sporting events taken place worldwide since the pandemic began. Covid is a learning process for all and the IOC with medical experts in many fields have devised a strategy to ensure everyone’s safety. If the games could not be held safely the IOC would have the option to cancel the event despite the chaos it would cause.

False flag Steve:
I agree, if a minority of ill informed wish to hate on the games then they should ignore them.
If you think that the 80% of Japanese who now oppose the Olympics constitute a "minority" I would suggest you might be well advised not to accuse other people of being ill informed.
Glass houses, stones, and all that.
Antiquesaving
False and again false because 2 doctors associations and the nursing association in JAPAN, the ones dealing with the covid situation have come out clearly saying the games and the measures being taken are not safe.
Not some randomly picked people from some other country doing paperwork. Real doctors and nurses on the ground in Japan presently fighting covid.
The IOC propaganda machine has tried downplaying their opposition, tried lying, etc..
But the people of Japan 80% of them know the truth and no amount of false information from the IOC and it's mouthpieces wi change that.
Pukey2
Ha! Good luck finding them.
GdTokyo
I won’t be one of them. You couldn’t pay me to attend the Covid Games.
GdTokyo
Thanks, Steve. I needed a good laugh.
blvtzpk
This just sounds like an IOC press release, doesn’t it?
Antiquesaving
So the IOC is not only NOT going to tests all those coming and working at the games daily as promised.
They want to let people into the games so the not tested and the public mostly not Vaccinated can come into contact.
We know this will happen because the few that will be tested daily by the IOC are the athletes a few officials (team coaches and members) which even in non pandemic situations rarely mingle with the public going to the games.
So rarely tested workers, volunteers and the rest of the 70,000 plus coming will be in contact with people that will be returning home to offices, etc ..
Great way to bring the virus to those 70,000 non being tested and spreading the virus to those going to the games.
Someone again tell us how honest the IOC is and how safe the games be. Sound more like all talk no action other than disregarding all common sense and medical advice.

i am sure the millions in India, Brazil begging for oxigen tanks and supply, the millions that have lost loved ones around the world including the USA, Europe, Canada that not only lost loved ones but have been able to hold a decent funeral or in many cases under the local restrictions haven't even been able to bury the dead ( such as in the case 2 family members that died last year), and many will still be under restrictions, are all going to be saying "oh great the Olympics!" " Let's watch a bunch of privileged people that are traveling around the world while we remain under restrictions" I am sure this is going to make their restrictions fell so much better, right?
Anyone that thinks people need the games now has zero understanding of human nature or what it is like to lose loved ones.
ian
Games/sports events with larger crowds are happening everyday.
I'm sure everyone is also protesting the holding of sports events in their respective countries but it ain't happening
Antiquesaving
Ok now name one country one event that is attracting 100,000 people from other countries all at once while that country is under Covid restrictions.
Oh and that also has less than 4% of it population vaccinated.
Antiquesaving
It is interesting that some say the world wants the games but a previous survey done in 5 countries seem to show a very different story.
95.6% in Thailand want the games postponed or cancelled.
The number in South Korea is 94.7%, China is 82.1%.
The USA is 74 4% and France is 70.6%.
5 countries all say the games should be cancelled or postponed.
Add that to the 80% of Japanese.
It doesn't seem that support is as universal as the IOC claims.
The survey was conducted by the Japan Press Research Institute.
ian
100,000 only? You have to include the possible number of spectators, they are ones who are more at risk.
Even so numbers still minuscule compared to the US for example. MLB alone 163 games for each of the 30 teams in a season. Stadium capacity average around 42K but probably most accept far less than full capacity

Read the following, then decide whether or not to believe previous statements by the IOC about how "safe" these games will be:
https://www.scmp.com/sport/other-sport/article/3134441/tokyo-olympics-ioc-puts-covid-19-risks-athletes-shoulders-groups
Personally, I hope the games are cancelled, or the Sponsors held to account.

Mr Coates has assured the world that the Olympics will be safe, he is an honest and kind man. The IOC have made safety paramount and if there were any dangers, they would cancel the games. Their medical experts and the WHO have agreed that the games have enough preventative measures in place.
