In Japan, women are not allowed to enter places such as a sumo ring, or dohyo, as they are regarded as being sacred.

Personally speaking here, I think women are more "sacred" !

Oh, and "places" is plural, so besides the sumo ring/dohyo where are women NOT allowed to enter?

Please elaborate!

Has the Chintoro boat traditionally been male only?

"We will allow women on the boat as (the relay) is a separate event from the regular festival,"

Any surprise Japan ranks DEAD LAST in all the G-20 for equality, and almost dead last world-wide besides? I mean, true, nations where you can stone a woman to death for being seen without a burka on rank slightly worse, but still.
