How about shelving the Games for another year and sparing everybody the risks, dum dums?
Joseph
I'm completely dumbfounded by these types of decisions. Lets just make it real simple. ANYONE who has been vaccinated from anywhere can come to the games and anyone who has not, cannot. Let the games then proceed as normal. Can someone please explain what is wrong with that? Is Japan not doing this out of shame over their own low vaccination rates? Afraid that the games will be enjoyed by everyone but Japanese? Help me understand...please!

Japan has obligations to host these games, rather than keep putting more restrictions on foreigners who have long been vaccinated, simply restrict the number of Japanese who attend the games. People can see more from home on television.
The hysteria and rampant political paranoia from those "in charge" is really tiresome and putting a damper on what should be a morale boosting event.

Very unwanted event.

The Japanese government is attempting to keep out the Indian variant which has been very transmissible in the UK, especially amongst young people.
The Japanese government recognizes the risk but as money is the primary goal then they are trying to reduce the risk...

All one need do is look at what happened in New York City, with SARSCoV-2 overwhelming the city and hence spread outwards. Tokyo, to a degree, similar to NYC, an enormous metropolitan area with large masses of citizenry commuting all throughout the city. Reducing the number of overseas personnel will not stave off the spread of the virus.

Cut exporring vaccines to japan by 25000

I was wondering what the so-family were, that amount to so many thousands. Silly me, thinking it was athletes' family accompanying them. Well, all I can say is, they are NO relation to me. How many of these hangers on, normally get their nice perks at the host taxpayers' expense?
As it all slowly unravels, we are really getting to see the sleaze slither out in full public view. I always thought, well if other people enjoy it, whatever, even though the bloated and ever increasing costs have always seemed insane to me. But seeing this whole thing unfold is like watching that kids' movie where the baddie, after managing to disguise itself as a human through most of the film, finally reveals itself as a disgusting, quivering mass of ectoplasm with a hollow, mocking laugh. Someone please tell me the good guys are going to appear and rescue us at the last minute ...

Cut it to ZERO, just goes to show how much the pigs have their noses in the trough,
top heavy, over entitled, over compensated, over the top.
Too many lecherous ones sucking the teet obviously

Your playbook always set near miss mandating to the game one month away in red zone signal doesn’t it ?

Sloppy organizing as usual in rough and ready job again hasty response !!

Postpone the Games. Hold them next year.
Vaccination will be complete. The venues aren't going anywhere. People will be welcome. Fans will be able to attend. EVERYONE wins with postponement.
Well...except those dumb Aussies who decised to show up too early.
Fighto!
Worst olympics since 1936.

Japan wants all the credit for hosting a major international event without actually having to "host" it.

Because vaccinated people pose a threat to the unvaccinated? This only makes sense if you take one thing into account: xenophobia.
Mark
I wonder how the how the the athletes feel knowing they are competing in a country were they are NOT so welcomed, must be a terrible if not down right miserable feelings.
HJSLLS
At what point will athletes withdraw from the Olympics due to insufficient coaches and support crew allowed to attend? Now teams must scramble to figure out who will do what. This turning more into a nightmare than an inspiring event the Olympics was designed to be. This should have been cancelled months ago.

It should be cut to zero. If they are not allowing spectators from overseas because they present an infection risk (despite most countries having higher vaccination rates than Japan), then they should not allow anyone from overseas. Barring everyone but allowing the few deemed VIPs will not go down well with the people who are paying for this who have been told to watch on TV.
Fuzzy
This is Sure to be the worst games in history. I feel bad for the people of Japan. None of this is their fault or in their control. It is all on the greedy IOC and the spineless J-gov.

Shambles, it’s a shambles, what the hell, a month out and still making rules? Packing my corn chips, opening ceremony hilarious. Please wack a mole with the mayors part and present and Abe, Suga randomly popping up, please smack those suckers down, hilarious.

If the organizers prioritized the safety and health from the population, or even the economy of the country in general instead of the profits of a few the number could be reduced to 0

It's all very well having doctors from overseas to help out, but what do you do when a person infected with Covid-19 needs intensive care in a hospital. Will beds be taken to the detriment of locals who are sure to be infected by holding the Olympucs whilst there is a pandemic.
jiji Xx
but, as per yesterday's story, foreign embassy staff here will be vaccinated....
essential dignitaries that would be I guess. and of course, they'll be watching the Olympics on TV.....
GdTokyo
Better yet, cut the number to zero and cancel the games.

2021 No Fun
Pim
I also think that a certain number of people are just not interested in coming anymore, looking at how fun it's going to be with all the testing, GPS tracking, no alcohol after 7, etc.

How about where the sun don't shine? That would be a good place to start, Nakamura.

The next step should be to cut about 15,000 athletes and we should be at about the right number...
Spitfire
Man,1936 and 2021 are becoming so alike.
Just let's give all of the medals, especially the gold ones,to Japan.
The possibly infected foreigners don't need to show up since Suga and Koike are living it up with only a home crowd allowed in spite of numerous warnings from Japan's Medical Association.
HBJ
Why would you make this decision with only 30 days to go before the games start?
Surely you'd only make restrictions stricter if the situation was getting worse. Is this the truth - because all the noises coming from official channels is that the situation is getting better and more people could possibly be allowed into the stadiums and arenas.
So there are 3 possibilities here:
The Covid situation isn't as rosy as all the officials are making it out to be. In fact its getting worse.
Pure incompetence - these people should've been officially 'cut' months ago.
Sabotage - the Tokyo OC has taken this sudden late step to disadvantage certain athletes from having their expected coaching / support team in the country.thepersoniamnow
So let me get this straight…
We are in dire straits, old people are dying at nursing homes and in ambulances and theres no spare ICUs.
You manage to cut a further 20,000 people from a list? How did you manage to miss them the first time around?
