The indigenous Kanak deserve their own maidan-style-color-revolution in New Caledonia.

Surely that would result in a Russian invasion, though? Right, comrade?

I think Russia is a little busy at the moment losing mind-boggling amounts of men and materiel in Ukraine, but perhaps you could call Putin for us and check. Thanks.

A colonialist crackdown on the native locals to secure the mineral rich land for themselves

Not at all. More like regaining law and order after lawlessness resulting in a number of murders, has made life unsafe for the local population.

Nice attempt at some right wing anti French sentiment though.

This genuine populist uprising in New Caledonia is unlike others which were astroturfing bankrolled by the NED.

The Kanaks are honest people, striving for independence.

Kanaks and south sea islanders (i.e. people from other islands in the region) do make up a majority.

So suddenly other Pacific Islanders have an interest in New Caledonian independence? Nice massaging of the data but not going to work.

The minority colonialists have banned TikTok in New Caledonia because that's what autocratic regimes do to clamp down on populist movements and information. Article indicates a "state of emergency" has been imposed.

Kanaks and south sea islanders (i.e. people from other islands in the region) do make up a majority. France has always ensured rigged elections to thwart them. That too should not be a hard concept.

A rent-a-violent-mob of 50,000 in the capital doesn't make a majority amongst tens of millions.

50,000 is what 50,000 more than Russia had? Sources of payments or they didn't happen.

Back to topic:

Calemaidan is a tossing out of France by a clear majority of Kanaks.

Which is not a majority of the population. This is not a hard concept.

Take note Taiwan. No independence. New Caledonia’s fate is determined.

The PRC can't land one policethug on Taiwan, let alone an army.

@JJE The protesters are the minority even among natives.

OK I get it now. Some peoples are special and deserve maidan-style events, billions of dollars while others - like the Kanaks - deserve no such privilege, even though they are fighting off occupiers and an invasion (pictured above in the main photo).

-5 ( +3 / -8 )

No. The Kanaks deserve support in their fair struggle for independence in their native land.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

There has never been a majority in favor of independence. Some commentators just want to run cover for genocidal wars.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

@JJE Do you think all all ethnic minorities in western countries such as the US should not be allowed to vote because it would dilute.the majority vote? It's what is at the heart of this debate.

The same debate will happen in countries where the largest ethnic minority aren't the colonialists but in fact Chinese or Indian.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Firstly, the Kanaks are native to the island. Secondly, they are the biggest group and not some "small group". And thirdly, they have largely boycotted those rigged elections.

And that's what this "anarchy" is all about - the French parliament is going to change electoral laws (in New Caledonia) to dilute the electoral representation, thus power, of the Kanaks even more.

This is just the latest in a long line of tricks the colonialists have used to cement their power there.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

There was 3 elections for independence, they voted 3 times against. And now a small group is trying to burn everything!

Anarchy is not the solution even when you lost the election 3 times!

@Nandakandamanda

In other territories of the pacific islands, the largest non-native population are usually Chinese or Indian, and there have been numerous political movements and even riots to disenfranchise these ethnic minorities. While I agree that colonialism is generally bad, the law that the French government is trying to impose should be considered progressive in the context of the pacific islands due to rampant discrimination against ethnic minorities.

This article explores unfolding events there. But there is more than meets the eye going on at international levels.

France has accused Azerbaijan of fomenting the recent unrest there (and by extension Russia).

Hilarious stuff that you couldn't make up.

Videos I saw had an identical looking plane with cargo pallets being hoisted and loaded into the rear cargo holds at night. And a large detachment of GIGN people in tactical gear (shoulder badges were clearly visible) preparing to board.

Maybe a different plane from the main photo as the article quotes Mr. Le Franc as saying "massive" amounts of reinforcements on are their way.

Looks like Macron finally gets his troop deployment and his own special operation.

@WB.

The article says 'French residents', but you are suggesting that the problem is fears of wider general dilution, such as Chinese etc.?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Firstly, it's important to note that only a small minority of activists are taking part in this movement. In fact around a half of natives support the French law, which is why it is so controversial

The second point is that there is major problem with voter disenfranchisement of Asians in many pacific island countries, and laws such as this one would be required to support ethnic minorities in said regions.

"Reinforcements will arrive massively, immediately (and will be) deployed to control the areas which have escaped our control in recent days... to reconquer all the areas of the urban area which we have lost," he said.

A colonialist crackdown on the native locals to secure the mineral rich land for themselves. Note the use of the word "reconquer" by the high commissioner - meaning that it was conquered once.

Yesterday videos showed GIGN tactical police personnel and material being loaded on a jet in France.
