'You called me a liar,' Warren told Sanders post-Iowa debate

Elizabeth Warren accused Bernie Sanders of calling her a liar before a national television audience during a tense, post-debate exchange in which she refused to shake his outstretched hand, according to audio released Wednesday by CNN.

The Democratic presidential rivals are strong progressives who had steadfastly refused to attack each other for more than a year on the campaign trail. But that changed Monday, when Warren said that, during a private meeting between the two in 2018, he disagreed with her that a woman could win the presidency.

Sanders, a senator from Vermont, has denied that, and did so again during Tuesday night's presidential debate, which was hosted by CNN and the Des Moines Register and held in Iowa, whose first-in-the-nation caucuses are Feb. 3. Warren stood by her account and said it was time to confront the larger issues of sexism in politics.

That exchange lasted only a few minutes. But after the debate was over, Warren, a Massachusetts senator, approached Sanders, who put out his hand for her to shake. Instead, she confronted him, and the two talked briefly in tense tones.

Neither campaign would confirm what was said Tuesday night, but CNN released the audio Wednesday. As she is refusing his extended hand, Warren repeats, “I think you called me a liar on national television." Sanders gently brushes her with his hand, then says, “Let's not do it right now.”

“You want to have that discussion?” he continues. “We'll have that discussion." Warren replies, “Anytime.”

Sanders then adds, “You called me a liar,” before concluding, “All right, let's not do it now.”

The exchange was interrupted by fellow candidate and environmentalist Tom Steyer, who said, “I don't want to get in the middle of it” and greeted Sanders as the senator walked away.

Warren's and Sanders' aides have for days attempted to de-escalate the feud as some progressives worry that ill will between the cause's two leading voices will ultimately hurt both of them and could benefit more moderate Democratic presidential hopefuls like former Vice President Joe Biden and former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

Release of the audio is likely to ensure the political fight continues — at least for now.

I really hope this isn’t a ‘developing story!’ Enough already.... does it really matter what was said in a private conversation a couple of years ago? We have far more important things to worry about.

Stupid Democrats.... You need a pick a candidate to win in swing states. That and that only is ALL you need to do. Not your favourite guy or girl, just the candidate who can beat Trump in states that count!

so much love and compassion between our dem loons.

always entertaining....)

Let’s hope they don’t start throwing around childish nicknames on stage during debates. That would be pathetic, childish trash which nobody could defend.

I watched Biden in that debate. Every sentence is a tightrope walk.

This is great fun to watch. Not the debate, but afterwards.

4 ( +9 / -5 )

Can't they even be civil and decent with each other?

Blacklabel: "This is great fun to watch. Not the debate, but afterwards."

Says a guy who is so utterly in love with a man who lies so much he makes up his own weather time and again, and people like Blacklabel BELIEVE IT!

In any case, if Sanders said it (and then denied), bad on him, but it seems to me if accusations like this are made there should be proof to back it up; I mean, we have tapes and video of such things all the time. Biden denies that he supported the Iraq War, for example, so they pull up clips of him not only supporting it, but being more right-wing than the wingers. Surely they have evidence of Bernie saying this. The WORST part was when he clearly denied it after being asked twice, and then the questioner doesn't ask Warren, "What do you think if he did Indeed say it," she ignores Bernie's answer and asks, "How did you feel when he said a woman couldn't win the presidency?"

That’s all well and good. Warren has lied multiple times already. Is she lying again or is Sanders?

@blacklabeWarren has lied multiple times already.

I'm trying to square how Trump supporters can say all Trump's lies are OK while now saying other people's lies aren't OK. I thought most Trump supporters had said all politicians lie so no big deal. But then most Trump supporters have claimed honesty, ethics, morality aren't important. All that matters is results; in Trump's supporters case especially results that keep the 'elite' establishment in power.

Neither of them can win2020.

This is exactly why Democrats lose elections that are theirs to lose.

Entertaining to watch and listen to but Warren should've taken it off stage since they're probably both going to need the other's support and (especially) voters somewhere down the road. Anyway, it should've been handled differently.

Still, the Democratic debates have been much more civil and mild compared to the nasty Republican debates which Trump used as his launching pad.

Hey, are our fiscal conservatives happy that Mayor Pete mentioned the debt and Trump’s out of control spending?

-1 ( +5 / -6 )

I didn’t say that at all. I asked very clearly for this specific situation, which one lied Warren or Bernie?

Warren isn't upset Bernie suggested she's a liar, which she knows she is. It's that he did it on TV.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

The circus has come to town hahaha, democrats not a diplomatic shred to be found anywhere, nor brains.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

If this all the Dems have got they are screwed...

5 ( +7 / -2 )

It's not their genders that counts these two out in 2020, it's their and their party's policies.

The Democratic Party has had a spectacular downfall in recent years. it is now terminally infested with liberal woke bible thumping elitism, racism against whites, misandry, identity politics, victimhood, slaughter the babies up until birth, false climate change claims, etc. They need to get back to the Democratic Party of old that actually cared about the working class.
