Financial independence? They've taken the hard decision of keeping their 'cottage' as a UK base. £2.5 million was spent out of the public purse to renovate it. They want it all ways - they want to keep the good bits of being a royal, but avoid any work or responsibility. Perhaps they could discuss their 'unhappiness' with the thousands in the UK who depend on food banks or are living on the streets.

Team player, taking a hit for Prince Andrew.

IfMHO, if history is anything to go by, this is no sudden unanticipated move. It's a strategic empire building move.

Nonsense. They're running far away from the hateful racist mob and the Murdoch tabloid empire of filth. Andrew is toast, even his mother knows that.

Gibberish. It's well-known that the royal family is being slimmed down under Prince Charles' direction. It's 2020 not 1720, cobber.

Quite right. I'm a bit sad because she's the best thing that has happened to the royal family in my lifetime, but they've done the right thing and turned their back on the whole charade.

Is Meghan Markel, a machiavellian, mischief making, merchant of misfortune for the despondent Prince?

The epitome of Prince Harry constant media accusations of woke entitled delusion?

Reportedly fleeing to Canada, leaving hapless Harry, and the Nanny to care to 8-month-old Archie?

Please, excuse my rudeness, for the shoddy incorrect spelling should read, Meghan Markle.

The papers are just doing what they have been doing all along - spewing vile, bigoted hate. As I said elsewhere, most Britons appear to be sympathetic.

Much as I am against the concept of monarchies, there's little doubt that certain sections of the British press couldn't stomach the idea of black and mixed race royals.

Playing the race card, mixed or otherwise is a misnomer, a smoke screen.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, wish to retain all the trapping, the wealth, the tax payer funded refurbished properties, the titles/ lineage. And costly public funded police security.

However, without having to commit to any notable pretence of a sense of duty

What could be a less appealing existence than taking a hand out from a priggish, stifling public, so that you might open a few nursing homes with the ribbon cut, and attend a lot of very boring parties. These two bright and capable people have better things to do with their lives than be chased around for photos, have their emails, snail mail and phone calls hacked and be fed alive in tiny bits to an anachronistic and unapologetically racist culture.

Free Harry and Meg!

Both, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are independently wealthy.

Seriously both could shake off, the so-called shackles commiserate with the stifling nature of public life, Monarchy, the misery of media attention etc etc at a whim.

But no, habits die hard. it would entail financial  bridges having to be burnt.

Most Britons are not sympathetic.

Elizabeth had asked Harry and Meghan to not go public with thus announcement yet. They ignored her. Meghan wanted to announce it yesterday for maximum drama because it was Kate's birthday.

British people don't like self-absorbed individuals.

This is the point. As outright abolition of this circus is unlikely, I want it shrunk as much as possible.

If you want out, please get out but leave the titles, benefits, cash and whatever else behind you.

Why should he tell the Queen?  It's not like she is his grandma or anything..........

If they end up being cut loose and losing all the protection and whatnot likely there will be some tragedy to come.

They're running far away from the hateful racist mob and the Murdoch tabloid empire of filth.

They can do that without running away to the other side of the world, nor give up their position in the royal household.

Andrew is toast, even his mother knows that.

Which is why Prince Andrew needs a distraction. The Queen would never cutoff one of her own.

Definitely newsworthy.

I feel for anyone born to a life they don't feel suited for, and I can quite understand Harry's wish to get out from under the dead-weight of royal protocol.

But you can't just ditch the bits you don't like (media attention, needing your granny's approval for everything you do) or find boring (opening hospitals and fetes, being honorary chair of umpteen charities), while hanging on to the trappings (posh house renovated at taxpayer expense, sumptuous lifestyle paid for from the public purse, a clothing & sundries allowance from Daddy* calculated to be in the millions).

If Harry found his position so onerous, he should have said something and gotten out before the public paid for his wedding and 'cottage'.

He should take his inheritance from his mother, kiss his granny bye-bye and sail off into the obscurity he so craves. No half-measures of residences in the UK and north America each staffed by security personnel paid for by UK taxpayers.

If you're out, (and I can understand why he would want to be), then you're out.

*Who of course gets his money from the public purse.

If they think that "stepping back" as "senior members of the Royal Family" (this sounds like some corporate announcement) is going to get the tabloids or paparazzi off their back they are sorely mistaken.  Especially if they still want to make money off their status and celebrity.

I truly believe that Prince Harry has fallen in love and married Meghan Markle, strong, resolute with a clear sense of purpose.

Sorry and with no disrespect, Prince Harry is weak, and I suggest, regretfully easily led.

Meghan Markle is the kick up the backside, Prince Harry needs

However there is no halfway house. Membership of the Royal Family, the “Firm”, brings responsibilities, public duty, patronage.

No one foot in, one foot out, it is all or nothing, in or out.

a bit like Hotel California 'you check out anytime you like but you can never leave'

Im sure he could easily leave the royal family.... Just take a DNA test!

Diana was only royal through marriage and his father a common army officer.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I agree with Cleo- if they want out, they can get OUT. no more money from mumsy (or the general public), no more royal perogatives, no more titles. Let's be honest here- Meghan is just a very minor B or C grade pseudo celebrity whose claim to fame is being part of the ensemble of a minor cable tv drama. Grace Kelly she ain't. Apparently she found the reality of being a member of the royal family to be a harder role than she thought.

I have the feeling they want to become some kind of ultra-woke power couple, trading in on their fame to scold the unwashed masses about various social issues.

Megan Markel is just your average hollyweird, narcissist. She scored herself a prince, gained a load of free publicity, and had hoped to remake the Royal house in her own image. Besides "acting", Markel is well known for not getting along with her own family. She is now known for not getting along with her husbands family. Markel's hollyweird career will take off, and Harry the red might as well change his last name to Markel. The only one who doesn't seem to know what's really going on is Harry. Maybe Harry can ask Brad Pitt for advice on how to deal with the result of a bad marriage?
