"Why are we -- neighbors of the United States -- not given the same opportunity to seek asylum? We came here fleeing almost the same thing,"

"The nerve!" - Jared Taylor

Almost the same thing. Not the same thing.

'Why not us?' Latinos stuck at Mexico border as Ukrainians enter U.S.

Just wait amigos - it will soon be hiring season at Bedminster, Trump Tower, and Ma-A-Lago...

Thousands of Ukrainians have since flown to Tijuana to cross the land border to the United States -- easier than getting the visa required to fly direct.

Have to admit that taking that exact route and getting the VIP treatment past all the other refugees is pretty insulting, at best.

The actual reason "why not us" should be patently obvious to anyone though. Same reason that any of the multitude of bombings in recent years have not gotten the same media play, or that even Ukrainian refugees of non-slavic descent are getting different treatment.

They would probably be better off going in a different direction for the treatment they will get.

refugee: a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.

Let everyone in. Why not?

Many of the Latino "refugees" do not face the same level of violence and immediate danger the Ukrainians face at the hands of a superpower invading their homeland and reducing their cities and towns to rubble with massively powerful and destructive military armaments. Top that off with war crimes and indiscriminate targeting of civilians including children and you arrive at the reason they are for the time being, being given and easier avenue for entry.

Latino "refugees" are there for a new life while the majority of Ukrainians will return to their homeland when the war is over, providing it is not being controlled by Russia or pro Russian puppets.

It similar to medical triage.

For the latinos and others it is hard to understand as they clearly feel they deserve identical treatment, but the circumstances are different. Many left home for a better future and it was their choice to leave. For Ukraine "refugees" it is a matter of survival during a brutal war against a superpower that far outguns it. There is a drug war in Mexico but no invasions going on in South America forcing millions to flee in the past few weeks.

Basic reason- You Latinx have homes to go back to. The Ukranians don't. So perhaps you should and apply for visas the legal way.

The arguments put forth by the writer prove why it’s better to let Ukrainians in: the USA has been dropping it’s pants for Latinos; yet they’re still unhappy. They want more and more. Like the Central Americans a couple of years back waiting in Mexico complained about the free tortillas and refried beans. It’s never enough, they’re never remotely grateful, and they won’t assimilate. Ukrainians won’t start waving their flag in the USA and calling everyone gringos. The Ukrainians will be more grateful and respectful to Americans and will try to assimilate.

Perfect point. At the end of the day nations are fundamentally made of a certain race, not nationalities, passports, or people from the same continent.

Ever wonded why Chile has fully access to the whole world, including Europe, Japan, Canada, US?

Why you dont see hordes of Argentinians crossing the Rio Grande river?

Or better yet, why you hardly see any white mexicans in these illegal crossings even when they make up half of Mexico's population (working hard as lawyers, doctors, etc in Mexico City and other capitals)

While I support Latin people getting legal status in the US, I resent the comparison

20 million latinos have crossed into America illegally, thousands continually cross illegally every day. The detainment facilities are overrun, tens of thousands have been bussed or flown around America over the last year. Even before the pandemic, American hospital emergency rooms were over capacity, a large percentage of those seeking treatment were/are in America illegally. One of the reasons that health insurance and healthcare in America are so outrageously expensive is because American hospitals must pass the cost of patients who don’t pay for treatment to those who do. Then there is the crime, the human and drug trafficking and everything else.

The Ukrainians will be more grateful and respectful to Americans and will try to assimilate.

This is the reason?

Too many the quality of life is becoming third world. The cartels are worse than Putin they kill anyone. All the governments south of the border are corrupt and they get paid to stay that way. The worlds drug supplies come from that region, yet and still yo have China supplying the chemicals to make the cheap drugs, you have the governments taking bribes and the US who looks the other way and do very little to curb the drug flow in the name of keeping communism of of its door step.

yet and still yo have China supplying the chemicals to make the cheap drugs,

Mostly Chinese banks launder the drug money too. Laws in western/democratic nations make it very hard to move such large sums of anonymous money but phone apps and Chinese banks have taken up that line of business.

"almost the same thing" - I feel sorry for all people, including the other emigrants wanting to enter US, but this is definitely not the same thing. One is a country attacking another country with the purpose of genocide, indiscriminately killing both children and adults, the other is a poor, weak country with corrupt governments. Only one category can claim the war refugee status.

How many other countries would put up with 111K invaders a month crossing their borders illegally? https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/national-media-release/cbp-releases-january-2022-monthly-operational-update That's how many the US Customs encountered in January 2022. It is an invasion.

Ukraine is a war zone. Most Ukrainians aren't leaving by choice. Their choice is to leave or die from Russian bombs, tanks, soldiers.

Ukrainians are educated with skills that can be useful in the US. The very poor latinos ARE hard working, but most coming in at a land border crossing are not well educated. They will end up doing labor in the lawn-care industry or minimum wage work in restaurants. Nothing wrong with that. I washed dishes in restaurants for years myself. But minimum wage was never intended to support a family.

For Mexicans, I agree. If they live in a war zone and seek US asylum, then their chances should be good for US asylum. They are a country on the US border. Doesn't matter about their education.

For everyone south of Mexico, they are economic immigrants shopping for the best place they can get into, not the first place that is safe. Panama, Costa Rica are both "safe" places. They should have stopped there.

Over 12M latinos are in the US illegally today. Ukrainians are much less represented and very few are here illegally.

It makes sense that the US gives preference to people who follow the laws of the country. Many thousands of latinos will gain asylum and be allowed into the US legally. To them, I say welcome.

To everyone in the country illegally - that just pisses me off. There is no right to enter a country illegally and stay there.

How many asylum seekers will Japan allow this year, next year and every year following? Japan is over 1/3rd the population of the US and the US (except under the prior Ex-Prez) accepted 100K+ asylum seekers yearly. Japan should accept 30K/yr to be proportionally similar. Less than 100/yr is a joke. In 2022, they may let 2K refugees in . That's 28K short.

Why not us?!

easy. Because one is an economic refugee, but the other is a war refugee…a real refugee.

Why not us?

There's a fundamental difference between being offered help and demanding help.
