Just another day in America.

17 ( +18 / -1 )

It's gotten to the point where it's more surprising if there hasn't been a school shooting.

Any other civilized country would have done much, much more to try and reduce all of these shootings and massacres from happening, but, sad to say, not in the good ole USA.

Too many guns and too easy access means this is an inevitable part of American life.

Where is a well-regulated militia when you need one?

Hopefully each person injured in this latest shooting event heals quickly.

Thanks to all emergency responders for the risks they take every minute they're on duty, especially when they're put in harms way protecting the innocent from whack gun toters and other violent criminals.

Thanks to taxpayers who have to pay higher taxes - local, state and federal - to finance the ever increasing costs for emergency and other public service providers because of problems created by gun toters.

The guns and ammo industries profit while the nation suffers. boom boom kaching.

Hopefully this US American cancer isn't terminal and won't spread beyond its borders.

I'm happy living in Japan for many reasons. Sensible gun laws and practices among them.

What's funny is we will hear from the 2ATrump2AWeThePeople people here at JT how 2ANRA is so important to them...then they willingly leave their guns at home and come to Japan. The NRA is a cult. They don't even allow members to be armed at their functions. Like Wyatt Earp's old western town and the NRA drones just comply like they are goldfish.

Ah_soToday  08:08 am JST Where is a well-regulated militia when you need one?

I realise you think you were making a joke, but that's one of the arguments used by gun nuts to justify their interpretation of the intent of private gun ownership in the 2nd Amendment - they are the "well-regulated militia" in their minds. Every moron who owns an AR-15 or the like sees himself as the last line of defense not against a foreign threat, but against government tyranny. They choose not to acknowledge that gun ownership was permitted at the time the constitution was written because the framers and most citizens did not support the idea of a standing army. The Swiss took this to it's logical conclusion.

There is some chatter of the NRA pushing to allow "responsible teens" with a clean record to pack with conceal carry (including in school). As long as a teenager is at least 16, maintains a "B" average at least, they can be allowed to carry. The NRA's logic is that teenagers during the American revolution helped fight and this is something the original framers want. Teens have rights too. It's says "...shall not be infringed..." and nothing about minimum age.

Heartbreaking.

It's not just the deaths and injuries, though horrific. It's also that kids' sense of safety gets taken away and that we already ask too much of teachers. Solving this problem should be #1 for people on both sides of the aisle -- and yes it will require common sense gun control.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

And this is the nation that wants to import its model of democracy to the world! The American psyche is death and violence.  This is the nation the Western Powers (Western Wimps) wanted to make the police of the globe.

Something is out of control.

2 shooters with a kill count of 1 ? Embarrassing!! #SAD

/inappropriate to emphasize the joke that is American safety

On a serious note,

That is more surprising than the fact that there was a school shooting.

The republican politicians might as well have shot these students. It is their misguided policies that make mass shootings possible.

Go back to the 1940s, the 1930s, the 1920s, or 1910s,

Guns were readily accessible, even moreso than today. Catalogs sent to family homes sold guns. And yet no students shot up their schools. No one went on mass shooting sprees in public.

What changed?

I'm glad I left the US when I did. The only thing I really miss is cheap cantaloupe melons at the A&P.

Americans live in fear, and that in itself creates the vicious circle that leads to ever-greater gun sales.

Whatever other gripes one can feel towards Japan, I respect and praise its common sense restrictions toward personal ownership of deadly weapons (including carrying of knives).

"Guns don't die; people do."

A bad news day.

@YuriOtani

What makes shootings possible, mass or otherwise, are firearms. You can blame Republicans for the availability of firearms all you want. However, as long as firearms have value, they will be made available, legal or otherwise. That’s how a market works. At best the damage can be limited, but never eliminated.

@SuperLib

Just until we figure this thing out.

We know we can rule out any influence from the entertainment industry, the media and social networks.

I wonder, then, where the idea for a shooting comes from.

As I have stated on far too many articles previous to this one, after another mass shooting incident;

America DOES NOT CARE, it pays lip service responses to the violence, but nothing concrete ever changes. Just go buy another box of tissues to dry your fake tears, because you KNOW it's going to happen again!

Wash-rinse-repeat, until the next time!

Making gun-ownership illegal across the board in the US will never work. 1) 3D printed guns. 2) Gunsmiths in general would still craft firearms. 3) There'd be a booming black market of imported guns through America's porous borders. Even with a wall, you could drone firearms over the southern border. 4) There are too too many guns in the US. If the Feds try to go door to door to confiscate firearms, they will get slaughtered. The number of civilian gun owners way way surpasses the number of active and reserve military personnel combined. Not only that, but many gun owners have dozens and dozens of guns that they would sell or give away before a search by the Fed, and just bury their remaining firearms (like the Colonists did) or water-tight sink them in a lake to hide. The tigers are out of the bag, people. Think realistically.

Blame the founders of our country and our Constitution while you are at it. Who was the shooter and what are their politics?

whenever liberals are quiet about those and only talking “gun control” I know the answer why.

Huh? Democrats bring up gun control every time an incident happens, regardless if the shooter is a Trump fan or not. You're argument was damaged goods before you even started it. Gun control does not mean eliminating the second amendment, and the shooter was a young 18 year old high school student, probably not the most political person ever.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The GOP plan for fighting school shootings is to put guns in the hands of teachers across the country. There are almost 100,000 schools in America. So even if you only supply 1 firearm to each school, the likelihood of an unintentional discharge or a teacher who loses it and shoots their gun in the classroom goes up by an insane amount. Talk about good gun control policies...

RIP to all of the people who have lost their lives because of the inherent violence that is gun culture.

The two shooters had personality problems, according to news in USA. One guy was in the process of gender transitioning from male to female. The other guy was gay and full of hate. They planned this as a way to go out with a bang, in the tradition of Columbine. It's copy cat shootings. A new one will occur within the next 6 months. It's not guns. It's mental health problems untreated. Poor America. A few disturbed bad apples spoil the entire nation every few months. It cannot be stopped.

we didnt have such nonsense when I was growing up. Obama and his nut staff came up with transsexual rights and teachers. No wonder everybody is confused

More domestic terrorism from white, male gun owners?

Shooter Devon Erickson had posted on social media his hatred for christians and President Trump.

The gun problem in America is not just 1 problem - it's multiple problems

But America should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time - it can work on all those problems simultaneously, not just 1 problem at at time

Treating this as 1 problem at a time is a mistake

1 ( +1 / -0 )

USA does not need terrorists. They manage the self-destruction by themselves.

when my great great grandmother walked to school, and her daddy had guns in the house because of lawlessness at that time, interestingly there were no school shootings. It was actually a very violent time in the U.S. history. But they didnt teach gender confusion and other "interesting" concepts either.

I was watching the news where a town outside of London is 100% Muslim, and the board of ed. decided to introduce gender confusion curriculum to the students. Well the Muslim residents had an uproar, and interestingly enough, the school board became "sensitive" to their culture and banned the new curriculum. I found it to be funny because these progressive types got their wish of diversity with a 100% Muslim population, but that couldnt forsee that these immigrants could not get with their nonsense. My point is that the people teaching this confused crap are a worthless bunch and I feel responsible for most of the problems happening today.
