I am thankful I do not have to live in an extremely dangerous place like the USA where mass shootings happen every day.

You know what the nice thing about living in Tokyo is? Not worrying about getting shot. It's actually nice.

32 ( +36 / -4 )

The media is probably trying to find out the ethnicity of the victims and who the killer voted for in order to determine the magnitude of this story. An evil person is an evil person and deserves the death penalty. You want to lock him up for rehabilitation or to study his brain? There are plenty of those types of people in prison now.

Welcome to America, where gun rights trump the right to live.

Gun. Control. Now.

17 ( +30 / -13 )

Wash-rinse-repeat. So, now the clock resets until the next time. I wonder what odds Vegas is giving until the next one happens?

13 ( +14 / -1 )

Good for you. Safety of family always comes first. If I were you I'd never return to that awful and dangerous place you left to live in Tokyo.

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

as has the current one.

The previous president refused to introduce better gun control laws.

0 ( +16 / -16 )

I feel sorry for each one of those who died because politicians are scared to take on the blood thirsty gun lobby and their brainless followers!!!!

18 ( +25 / -7 )

Easy access to hundreds of millions of guns would naturally lead to mass shootings. It's built into the system.

Some people are OK with that side effect, others aren't.

17 ( +22 / -5 )

This has nothing to do with the President at the time. Has everything to do with a society under stress and where the tools to wreak this kind of mass havoc are easily available - whether legally or illegally.

6 ( +11 / -5 )

Plus we make them world famous for whatever platform or message they are trying to spread. We should refuse to list their names or any manifestos they've written.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

It’s only a question of education and values. And of course I like weapons, sports shooting with those BB soft air guns or virtually killing all those pixel monsters on the screen of maximum violent ego shooting computer games, but I wouldn’t even kill a fly or insect. (Well, sometimes my wife expects me to do that, so I have to kill them on order....lol)

5 ( +7 / -2 )

no known motive

And like in so many other mass murders, none will be found.

The one thing this latest massacre has in common with every other event in which a person with a gun fired a weapon injuring or killing others is - a person with a gun fired a weapon injuring or killing another person or other people.

Just one more example of how sick the US is when so many people are so afraid of whatever they feel the need to own and carry guns.

The gun industries are counting their profits today while those who don't own and carry guns, the majority of the US public, pay taxes to clean up the messes created by gun owners and the gun industries.

My daughter will return from Los Angeles to Japan not because of guns or anti-Asian violence but for personal reasons, but as a father, I'm glad she's getting the hell out of there.

Not news at all! Just another day in the land of the 'free' and the home of the ※brave.

※Only if carrying a gun, otherwise they flee.

-2 ( +4 / -6 )

when will they learn? guns DO NOT make people safer!

7 ( +14 / -7 )

Do you think it is easier to buy something that is legal or illegal?

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Another day, another mass shooting.

Mental illness is prevalent and not addressed.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Lots to like and admire about the US.

The sick gun culture among too many and the complicit or gutless politicians isn’t to be liked or admired.

7 ( +12 / -5 )

That country is really messed up and I just feel sorry for everyone stuck in it.

5 ( +11 / -6 )

Colorado is an open carry state, with a permit required for concealed carry.

Witnesses told FOX news that they saw a man brandishing an "AR-15 style weapon" and wearing what looked like tactical gear. This month, a law banning 'assault weapons' was overturned by a state district court judge.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

Americans have the fundamental right to carry guns (kill). A fool's paradise. Happy to be here in Tokyo.

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

Witnesses told FOX news that they saw a man brandishing an "AR-15 style weapon" and wearing what looked like tactical gear.

And according to the NRA the only thing that can go up against a bad guy with an AR-15 is a good guy with a M134 Minigun

8 ( +11 / -3 )

I’m a gun owner (in America) and the current state of gun laws is insane. Open-carry? really?

I remember not needing to get Rambo-ed up to go buy ice cream.

And the AR should absolutely be illegal for civilian ownership. It has basically one function; to put a high volume of fire down range. If you are a marksman, there are better options. If you are a hunter and need a 30 round clip, you objectively suck at hunting. These are war weapons and should only be handled by soldiers and police.

14 ( +18 / -4 )

Apparently 2020 had the lowest number of mass killings in a decade. I suspect it had something to do with the pandemic, like all the lock-downs, bans/restrictions on mass gatherings and perhaps even school closures. With two mass killings in a week, I'm guessing things are "back to normal" in the US. I'm just speculating about the shooter's motives, but I'm going to assume it was a "rights and freedoms no-masker".

2 ( +5 / -3 )

You know what the nice thing about living in Tokyo is? Not worrying about getting shot. It's actually nice."

Same with Kobe, or anywhere else in Japan.

Of course the big argument is that it can be necessary for self defence, which in the US is a legitimate, lawful purpose. And as one of the most common types of rifles, protected by the Second Amendment. I think this should be balanced with public safety considerations. Attacking a supermarket is not self defence.

Forgot to say, RIP to the victims and condolences to their families.

-4 ( +5 / -9 )

And the AR should absolutely be illegal for civilian ownership

You can own a fully automatic machine gun (made before around the mid 80s) but need very strict registration and none have been used in a mass shooting (that I know of at least). The NRA are paranoid about the government going door-to-door and taking everyone's guns and this is what happens due to extreme gun privacy laws. This keeps up then new semi auto sales might end up totally banned and only ones you would be able to buy legally are used ones with very strict regulation just like with fully auto machine guns.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Another mass shooting? Not a mass stabbing. Not a mass clubbing. Not a mass poisoning. Not a mass strangling. A shooting? Well, can anyone suggest what the problem might be? I have no idea. It could be fluoride in the water or maybe its the easy access to firearms?

Until the next one and hand wringing ritual that follows....

7 ( +9 / -2 )

I feel like this is a sign of things getting back to normal after covid. Mass shootings in America are back on! Covid-season must be coming to an end!

9 ( +10 / -1 )

The 2nd Amendment states: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

The worst ruling ever by the Supreme Court was to ignore the first half of the sentence and disassociate the right with the militia.

Over a million people have died by gunfire in the US in the last, and almost every, decade.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

These are war weapons and should only be handled by soldiers and police.

The police do not need military hardware.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

America sucks

Some parts do, some parts don’t. Either way so what happened condolences to all the families involved

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

Ironically, the very right to bear arms, that constitutional guarantee against the usurpation of liberty, is proving itself to be one of the greatest threats to that liberty. Supporters of that right would be far better off pushing for restricting gun ownership to an armed (and fully vetted) militia (as originally intended) than conniving in the inevitable, eventual draconian restrictions on gun ownership that will bring America into line with the rest of the civilized world, but at the loss of that reserve safeguard.

Peter Neil Not sure where you get your numbers. Example in 2016 there were 38658 gun deaths in the US. Of those about 23000 were suicides and about 14,500 were homicides. of the latter only 71 died in mass shootings. (the other 1,000 are "other" like accidents or whatever). sure mass shootings always draw a lot of attention, but as a proportion of gun deaths they are really tiny. And if 2016 is pretty representative (which I think it is) then there are nowhere near 1,000,000 deaths everey decade from guns.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

So, lets see what is what President Biden will do when these tragic circumstances put in his lap the decision on one of the problems that the US government always try to avoid making a decision on.

True, its not a million deaths per decade, its actually about 400,000 (roughly 40,000 per year), which is still astonishingly high.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

only 71 died in mass shootings.

Mass shootings make everything more expensive for everyone since places such as malls, schools, amusement parks, venues, etc. have more security to fight against the possibility of mass shootings and extra security does not grown on trees. Go to a supermarket in Japan and you just see security guards. Go to a US supermarket and you will often see a fully armed and licensed security guard at the premium cost that is passed on by higher grocery prices. Making schools safer against mass shootings? That costs money and is passed on to the tax payer.

Of those about 23000 were suicides

None of that results in the higher security costs mentioned above. They kill themselves in their own homes? That's their home and I never go there and does not affect me. But this clown in Colorado will result in the reaction of providing more and more security which costs me money because these security costs are passed on to me.

Another day, yet another mass shooting in gun obsessed America.

What else is new.

5 ( +8 / -3 )

Another crazy person with an easily acquired high powered weapon who’s murdered 10 people in moments. Just a normal day in America.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Definitely stricter gun control could prevent something like this.

We have enough strict gun laws on the books for most states, the problem is a lot of these laws aren’t strictly implemented the way they should be.

Look at other countries where it is almost impossible to get even a blank cartridge pistol without a license.

Ok, but other countries don’t have a second amendment, we do and congress whether which political side of the fence you are on won’t go to that that aggressive step to undermine it, just won’t happen.

-8 ( +3 / -11 )

Just another Groundhog Day in Amerikkka. Plus ça change! Come on, Biden, once and for all let's put a stop to this never-ending American story of "Guns'R' US" malarkey.

How? You have a millions of Biden supporters that are legalized, decent and registered gun owners? Not going to happen, needs to happen at the local level and then maybe you might see some real changes, but the federal level? Not a chance.

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

Ok, but other countries don’t have a second amendment

Yes like Japan where Trump 2A NRA evangelical people happily live with no guns. They hate gun control but come to Japan.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Seems like a false flag operation to push through a gun control agenda. Such kind of mass shootings should happen in my country because it is already a third world overpopulated hellhole. That is why I am a firm believer in gun rights.

RIP to the victims BTW.

Plus you have millions of card carrying Trump supporters that are decent and registered gun owners as well.

There is a huge part of the problem, NONE of them want to give up their weapons!

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Trump people: Should we allow the ownership of the M134 Minigun or the Milkor MGL? Because it says shall not be infringed and more powerful weaponry is necessary to fight bad people who have ARs.

0 ( +4 / -4 )

There is a huge part of the problem, NONE of them want to give up their weapons!

Why should they if they are law-abiding? They should never be punished for the mistakes of idiots that perpetuate these kinds of heinous acts.

bass4funk,

We have enough strict gun laws on the books for most states, the problem is a lot of these laws aren’t strictly implemented the way they should be.

Some states have strict gun laws. But what's the point of one state having, for example, universal background checks, or semi-automatic rifle or high-capacity magazine bans, if its neighbouring state(s) doesn't? The patchwork nature of America's gun laws dilute their effects. As @nishikat mentioned above, machine guns have been heavily regulated at the federal level since the 1930s and as a result are used in crimes very seldomly.

Also, can you expand on your idea of implementing gun laws 'the way they should be?'

3 ( +5 / -2 )

Take Chicago for instants, Chicago some of the strictest gun laws within the country and look at the crime rate, especially south Chicago and then compare that to Texas where you are allowed to have a carry conceal permit and a lot less gun deaths over all. you’re making an interesting point, but overall Chicago has not done a good enough job to implement is there a gun laws compared to other states that have a lower current rate in less gun deaths.

The patchwork nature of America's gun laws dilute their effects.

Not entirely.

Also, can you expand on your idea of implementing gun laws 'the way they should be?'

I can’t really say, because I think each state should do see fit as to which laws should be applied that serve their populations better. What works well for one state might not work well for another.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

bass,

Thanks. I agree about Chicago. There are problems there that go well beyond gun control. Interestingly though, according to the CDC, in 2019 the state of Illinois had a lower death rate per 100,000 than Texas did, and Giffords Law Center gives them an A rating and an F rating for gun laws respectively.

Not entirely.

15,000 deaths a year says otherwise, especially if we are supposed to believe that more guns equals less crime.

I can’t really say, because I think each state should do see fit as to which laws should be applied that serve their populations better. What works well for one state might not work well for another.

Fair point, but less successful states can take lessons from more successful ones, surely. For instance, the Center for American Progress found the 10 states with the weakest gun laws had three times more gun violence than the 10 states with the toughest gun laws.

in the majority of them are accidents or suicide or self inflicted gunshot wound, there are multiple reasons why the death rate is at that number, it’s not all just homicide and either way you look at it if you were to take the guns away that’s not going to lower the violence, when people want to do something to you they’re going to find ways to do it, you see that in the prison system for example, all I’m just saying is I should not have to pay a penalty when I am law-abiding.

Fair point, but less successful states can take lessons from more successful ones, surely. For instance, the Center for American Progress

A very far left anti-gun groups, OK that is one opinion, Of course they’re going to take the anti-gun stance position

found the 10 states with the weakest gun laws had three times more gun violence than the 10 states with the toughest gun laws.

there are states such as Arkansas that’s also a red state that have stricter and safer gun laws, I understand your point but the states have lower crime rates and even with the gun incidence they have, still overwhelmingly The majority of people are law biting citizens that on these guns

"How? You have a millions of Biden supporters that are legalized, decent and registered gun owners? Not going to happen, needs to happen at the local level and then maybe you might see some real changes, but the federal level? Not a chance."

Here's a thought. What if gun ownership was restricted to hunters and target shooters? What if the average American was not able to buy a gun just because they wanted to? How about any and all applications for the right to buy a gun was subject to strict background checks? Does this sound crazy? Perhaps, but it is what the rest of the world does. Could it be that little Tommy USA is out of step?

My feeling is also that mass shootings in the USA are now so common that many in the USA treat them no more than a severe weather warning, It will come, it will go. Then back to normal.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Here's a thought. What if gun ownership was restricted to hunters and target shooters? What if the average American was not able to buy a gun just because they wanted to?

Then that would mean you would have to ratify the 2nd amendment, it’s a thought but it’s not going to happen.

How about any and all applications for the right to buy a gun was subject to strict background checks?

That won’t work either, given the history of the government the majority of Americans overwhelmingly don’t trust the government with their private information, especially with this government, so I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

Does this sound crazy? Perhaps, but it is what the rest of the world does.

But the rest of the us not us and we are not them. Japan still sells CDs the majority of the world doesn’t. Come on now. What works in one country will not necessarily work well in another country and you can apply that to virtually anything

Could it be that little Tommy USA is out of step?

No, only the gun law abusers.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

in the majority of them are accidents or suicide or self inflicted gunshot wound, there are multiple reasons why the death rate is at that number,

15,000 was a low estimate. If we include gun suicides, the figure is closer to 40,000. Separate issue, in my opinion.

I should not have to pay a penalty when I am law-abiding.

Agree. I'm not against legitimate gun ownership. However, all illegal guns started out as legal ones.

Arkansas does not have strict gun laws, and in 2017, Arkansas had the seventh-highest gun death rate in the country.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Too bad there wasn't a concealed carry NRA member present. Could have taken out the perpetrator right quick, like that guy in the Texas church.

How do you know there wasn't? That's the point of concealed carry. Anyway, an armed response was made. Tragically, one such responder, a police officer, lost his life.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Different administration, same lunacy... unless they ban guns this is going to keep happening. It's not even surprising any more - it's more a case of when is the next one?

They won’t. Again, if you want to ban all guns, then tear up the 2nd amendment, but a word of caution, you might not like the consequences of such a move and then you would see real violence across the nation unfold which would 1861 a walk in the park. It just won’t happen and for arguments sake it did, these Psychos would try and find something else, either way, when they are on a mission to kill someone, it’s going to happen one way or another. I personally think we need to re-open the mental asylums once again.
