Wow. I was under the distinct impression that congressional republicans had no backbone. Looks like 12 of them reject Dimwit's power grab.
jcapan
Great to see that some elected republicans are willing to gamble on defying Trump. Maybe they're taking a long view as well, recognizing that in less than 2 years it'll be a Democratic president declaring emergencies.
bass4funk
Ok, let’s this ball rollin’ VETO time! No big deal, get the pen and phone ready, Mr. President.
bass4funk
On that point....
Already started....

Right, jcapan. This is less about showing backbone than a sign of lack of confidence in Trump's ability to win a second term. The tide is turning rapidly.
jcapan
And in case some have missed it, this is not the first time they've defied him of late. From WaPo:
Toasted Heretic
Or they're worried about the next PotUS coming for their guns, but still, wonderful to see a Republican referencing a revolution against the elite and interfering foreign oligarch, sorry, monarch.
More of that, please.
SimondB
So your elected representatives have all got it wrong? If this is your view then why bother having elections? Why not just have a dictator deciding everything. Now who could fill that role and still keep you happy? Let me think..............
SuperLib
Wow, 12 Republicans voted against it. Nice to see some will actually put party before country. The rest are cowards.
SuperLib
Blacklabel
And the next time these people don’t vote your way, you will be right back to questioning their judgement and criticizing them.
This is politics, they know that they can hide behind Trump and his veto on this issue.
Aly Rustom
republicans with morals. WOW!
Deadforgood
Not really, the veto will be fought to SCOTUS you know.
If anything Trump's attitude toward Rand Paul was hilarious, Trump through another hissyfit demanding Rand Paul to switch sides and lost that one too.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with criticizing and questioning the judgement of republican or democrat senators. You do it all the time with anything liberal. I bet if they voted no, you would have been in love with them but criticized them on other points. Your silly rambling makes no sense.

And once more Trumpers black and white, binary world crumbles before them - and as Trump faces more charges and more corruption and collusion become known, even more Republicans will turn their back on this Imposter of a President...
Clean out the White House - send the Dimwit back to Mar-A-Lago where he can be catered to by his illegal immigrant employees...
And his supporters still shout "Build the Wall" - all while the Dimwit hires and employs illegal immigrants - and they don't even see the utter hypocrisy in that...
Strangerland
Good on these people. They say absolute power corrupts, well these people prioritized the future of the country over the temptations of power.
It's crazy you have right-wingers praising the president's abuse of his presidential powers, just so he can retain power. This is while they claim they need the second amendment in order to fight tyranny in the government. Well, if you didn't give the government the power to become tyrannical, then you wouldn't have the need to fight tyranny.
Deadforgood
He may even be indicted before the bill reaches his office to veto! lol
Alexandre T. Ishii
Trump: Too early to appear and too late to vanish, my remote controller is out-of-order?
plasticmonkey
I didn't know you needed a phone to veto a bill.
Strangerland
Gotta get permission from daddy-Putin before he signs the veto.
Concerned Citizen
These 12 are traitors to their own party's voters who elected them to secure the border with a wall. Voters are sick of politicians who don't deliver.
lincolnman
Dang straight - we like politicians that "deliver on their word" - as in "Mexico will pay for the wall, mark my words, mark my words"....
Now that's Deliverance...in more ways than one....
Serrano
Wow, 12 Republicans voted against it. Nice to see some will actually put party before country.
( correction ) put country before party.
Neither one is right, Super. The RINOS put their own self-interests before the country or their party.
There will be a lot of RINOs losing in the next primaries.
And the Democrats put their own self interests or their rapidly morphing into far left radical party ahead of the country.
plasticmonkey
Does Congress have the obligation to pervert the constitutional separation of powers because a bunch of nitwits in red MAGA hats demands it?
bass4funk
To be honest, given the current political climate between both parties, it’s a good question. Presidents have been declaring national emergencies for a long time and Trump was not the first one, we’re Trump a Democrat, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion, absolutely not. The Democrats were ok with DACA, so....
plasticmonkey
Not the first, but certainly the dumbest.
DACA was not a declaration of a national emergency.
Miyam_Musashi
Note only Susan Collins is up for reelection in 2020. And who'd expect MItt to have Trump's six in a national emergency?
In the meantime, there is an emergency at the border with 76,000 illegals, an all-time high, trying to cross the border in Feb 2019.
Veto! Mr. Trump. Thank you for taking a stand for real Americans.
bass4funk
I disagree.
True, but Obama didn’t have to use an executive to push it through, he could and should have gone through Congress...wait, he didn’t because he know the GOP would have never passed legislation or support it. Well, we have the same thing now. Congress defied him, with Obama he didn’t even want to chance the GOP embarrassing him with a No vetoed, at least the President brought the measure to the floor for a vote. Oh, well, he tried. Mr. President use your veto power and push through on this
Deadforgood
How is voting for the constitution, against one's own party, putting self-interest before the country? Unless of course, you think the constitution is meaningless. Did you care to think before you posted?
plasticmonkey
Correct. The GOP caucus dragged their feet on all comprehensive immigration plans because some of them (like McConnell) didn't want to give Obama a win on anything and because others were Tea Party weirdo extremists. Obama's move certainly was problematic and possibly not the wisest in retrospect, but it enabled resources to be focused on criminals in the undocumented community. It was a practical move with a clear and practical benefit.
Trump's emergency declaration, however, cannot be clearly identified as having any substantial practical benefit, other than bringing his base a "happy ending". The overwhelming majority of drugs and other illegal trafficking goes through legal ports of entry. The increased number of asylum seekers from Central America (those "caravans") also overwhelmingly arrive at checkpoints. What's the point of a wall?
Huh? What measure did he bring to the floor for a vote? The Democrats brought a measure blocking Trump's declaration.
You're going to regret it, Mr. President.
plasticmonkey
Lee, Romney, Rubio, and their friends are not only RINOs, they are obviously far-left radical Marxists.
Serrano
30 billion a year for Israel - no problem!
8 billion for a one time payment for a wall that secures the sovereignty of the United States of America?
Democrats and RINOS: Can't be done.
Trump is putting it together piece by piece. Bear in mind, Trump has so arranged things that wall construction is actually going on right now.
You're going to regret it, Mr. President.
No, he's not. But the Dems and RINOS are.
CrazyJoe
I do not understand how a grown man or woman who has YEARS of experience as a Senator or Representative would allow an unqualified, inexperienced, out of control, boorish, ignorant, jerk, bully you around, while breaking all of the rules they held dear when it came to protecting, running our country and following our Constitution. Republicans should be ashamed of doing this to our country. They should be ashamed for allowing someone who they know good and darned well is not qualified or mentally fit to be president of what was a great country but now a laughing stock. donald j. trump is doing a great disservice to our country and the American people and Republicans are allowing it to happen. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!!!!
yamada1043
The United States of America has been under an undeclared state of emergency since the 8th of November, 2016. The nation, and most of the world, is suffering the consequences of the results of the election of Mr. Donald J. Trump on that fateful day.
Chip Star
Obama was well within his powers to implement DACA because it is an enforcement t priority issue. Trump pilfering money via a national emergency declaration is a blatant attempt of the executive to usurp congress' power of the purse.
Anyome trying to draw equivalencies between the two is far too ignorant about the constitution. ROFL! Kudos. Smh. Lol. Tee Hee! Oh my . . . HAR!
Chip Star
Odd that under Obama crossings constantly dropped, but under Trump they keep climbing. Trump's ineffectiveness is creating the problem at the border.
lincolnman
And another Trumper cites "Made Up Stuff"....
In Mar 2000 there were 223K illegal apprehensions - for a yearly total of 1,676K
In 2018, the yearly total was just 404K - one-fourth of the CY 2000 number.
"All time high" - Trumpers, just like their President" - have no understanding of facts or the truth...

Dems and RINO equals 80% of the American public...
The remaining 20% are hopelessly hoodwinked by Trump and Putin...
bass4funk
Because the Democrats in now way would have given up on the visa lottery program, catch and release and ending birthright citizenships or anchor babies. So the GOP would have never gone along with anything that wouldn’t have have ended these bad and out of date policies.
I get it, so then you do understand may argument when it comes to the border. I’m not happy that the President has to make this move, but he really has no choice, he tried everything, but the Dems don’t see an emergency in all of this as well as they don’t see a problem with the homelessness and with their sanctuary cities.
I understand and I felt the same way about the executive order on DACA, so we both feel that what each President is doing/did wasn’t the right approach.
What’s the point of having a front door or a yard around your house? Why is it all the Hollywood and liberals are allowed to have walls and the rest of us aren’t allowed that same right.
Hypocrites as usual....
smithinjapan
bass4funk: "Ok, let’s this ball rollin’ VETO time! No big deal, get the pen and phone ready, Mr. President."
No surprise you back dictators.
gcbel
You mind providing your source for this figure? Sounds like a made up number to me.
SuperLib
For, like, the 10th time....the Democrats offered to give up the visa lottery program in the bipartisan bill. I have no idea why you are unable to remember that.
For, like, the 10th time....Obama made a decision about policy. It was the same when Trump decided the new immigration policy was to separate families at the border. Obama didn't raid military projects for money for something Congress refused to pay for.
He can respect the fact that Congress, which controls spending, did not give him the money for the wall. The will of the people.
Show me where the GOP would have voted, as a majority, to end birthright citizenship. I wasn't aware it was part of their platform.
A vast majority of your post is disinformation that you've been corrected on numerous times. You just want a wall so you choose to believe lies.
lostrune2
Congressmen want to keep the power of the purse (budget) on the Legislative Branch of the federal government, as per the U.S. Constitution
Even Republican Congressmen realize in keeping the balance of power in the 3 branches of government because, for example, they can imagine this possible scenario in the future:
A Republican-controlled Congress decides to de-fund/repeal the Affordable Care Act aka ObamaCare
But a Democrat President declares that healthcare insurance is a national crisis and funds ObamaCare over the heads of CongressNow ya can understand why even Republican Congressmen are voting against this power-play by the Executive Branch of government
lincolnman
You mean hypocrite as in declaring illegal immigration a national emergency, then jetting off to your golf course where the workers you employ there are illegal immigrants?
Yes indeed, that's the ultimate hypocrisy...
mukashiyokatta
OVERRIDE!
Serrano
When you have hundreds of thousands of people illegally crossing your border on a monthly basis it is a national emergency.
OVERRIDE!
Not a chance.
Serrano
This discretionary spending that Congress already alloted to the Pentagon can be legally diverted by the Executive branch to use for building the wall.
bass4funk
I’m not a liberal.
And for the 10th time they didn’t
https://www.wsj.com/articles/donald-trump-says-daca-is-dead-because-democrats-dont-care-1522677860
Mr. Trump ended the Obama-era program in September but gave Congress until March to enact permanent protections for the roughly 690,000 immigrants it shields.
Since then, two federal judges issued injunctions blocking plans to end it for now and ordered administration officials to continue to process renewals. As a result, Congress doesn’t face an imminent deadline, and lawmakers have shown no signs of new action after a flurry of activity earlier this year fell short of a deal.
So liberals once again threw a monkey wrench at the whole thing.
After the recent spending bill was signed, Mr. Trump has repeatedly blamed Democrats for the lack of a DACA deal. Democrats had offered the president $25 billion in border-security spending, including $18 billion for walls or fences, but he rejected the deal because it didn’t also limit family-based immigration and end the diversity visa lottery, which gives people from underrepresented countries a chance to come to the U.S.
What a load of crap. The people wanted LEGAL IMMIGRATION and supported it as do most Americans.
bass4funk
For a long time, but that crescendo escalated when Trump because President and as part o his travel ban and the crime that many illegals and and the people that were killed in America by them spurred a lot of calls to end it. So many Chinese care coming to the States just to have a baby, go back to China for 18 years and then come back to the States in order to take advantage of our educational system.
Actually, it’s the other way around, but I understand liberals really think that the majority of the country think like they do, they really do. California is not the rest of the world.
SuperLib
Bass, you are entering a dangerous phase. These things I’m talking about are verifiable, and I’ve put verifiable information in front of you before. You are becoming very, very comfortable with detaching yourself from reality.
Now take what I said and throw it back at me without example or evidence. And tell me again that this very real thing that exists does not exist.
Concerned Citizen
It seems that President Trump has to drain his own party's swamp. I Throw the 12 traitors out.
plasticmonkey
38 billion over a decade, actually.
And the wall money Trump is demanding is not a “one time payment”. He is going to continue campaigning for more because it gives his base a collective chubby.
Simon Foston
Concerned CitizenToday 04:51 am JST
How does he go about doing that, then? How's it going to stop those ... "traitors" from voting with the Democrats in the future?
Got any realistic suggestions?

Who cares. Leave him to it. Anything more than a downvote or a single sentence in response to any of the stuff he comes out with is a waste of time and effort.
bass4funk
Same here.
As did I.
Exactly, who cares? I don’t. I don’t know about people not living in the States, but someone who’s grown up, seen it, lived it and a person who frequent Mexico a lot back in the day when it was a lot safer. I do not and will not buy into any crap or narrative liberals WANT ME TO BELIEVE. These are the same people that say, there is no caravans or we don’t have a homeless problem or there is no violence along the border. Funny that none of these liberal networks has the top of CBP or ICE on their panels or the police that work near the border. The very people that work it day in and day out, liberals and their surrogate news pundits don’t want to hear from the experts.

It's wonderful to see resistance against that treasonous loudmouth! Now he needs to be removed from office.
bass4funk
Well, he just vetoed that resistance, it’s futile anyway and he won’t be removed from office, it just won’t happen, the chances of him getting out of office is equal to Hillary’s chances at becoming President.
