what makes us sad most is the death of innocent civilians.its nothing about the CCTV or CCP.

dragonczar: aren't the Uighur people indigenous to that area? that question is only if you are Chinese.
fairyprince
Cute dragonczar. Don't you know you are and always will be under the thumb of the USA?
Don't know that yet? Not surprising. You will likely never know. Still you are cute in your beliefs. All hail the China awesomeness! LOL

It's a pity that the natives are being abused but what is anybody going to do about it? A lot of hand wringing but not much more, I'll bet.
mushroomcloud
dragonczar, I disagree.
China needs to show tolerance. The Uighur population is one of the many minority groups of China and they must be treated with respect. Any harsh crackdown resembling martial law will be met by mass unrest, to include hit and run attacks, IED roadside bombs, kidnappings, torture, and terrorist bombings, as experienced by the US in Iraq during the past 6 years.

maglev101: oh, those were lessons for dragonczar. I learned your lesson three many many years ago.
dragonczar
Here is the oppurtunity to show China is a real leader of of 21st century by showing the will of defiance! Only swift and brute treating method can bringing law, order, fair and justices in Xinjiang!
dragonczar
This is 'intifada' in central asia and of course the price of kicking up such unnecessary chaos will paying heavy price to let them know who is who!
maglev101
pawatan: lesson three - take everything the western media feeds you with a grain of salt.

China doesn't mess around. At least democratic Iran allowed 2 weeks of protests.

Yes we can feel dragonczar's love for his countryman. Nandakandamanda has his points too. Ethnocentric insensitivity is happening all over the world. We are all struggling to live together in harmony with each other. We might not be of the same colour or religion but we do not overstep certain sensitive issue that might stir up unrest.
mushroomcloud
China needs to tread lightly. If they deem it necessary to crack down with brutal force, it will only sow the seeds for deeper bitterness and unrest which could last for decades, if not centuries.
The US has plenty of experience in this regard, most recently with the invasion and brutal military occupation of Iraq over the past 6 years. Hundreds of thousands of civilians killed, wounded, maimed and tortured, with the end result being that almost every Iraqi civilian is now hostile towards the US.

Dragonczar, you would be pretty hilarious if you didn't actually believe that junk. Lesson One - don't believe anything you see on CCTV! Lesson Two - don't believe anything the CCP tells you, they only tell you what they want you to hear.
OssanAmerica
dragonczar...your thinking is outdated and has no place in this modern world. I know you're just parroting the CCP position as usual but that's the problem that China carries on it's back if it seriously thinks it's going to be some kind of "leader" in the 21st century.
fairyprince
HAHAHA dragonczar is so funny!
Oh wait. He is serious?

Why stop at Xinjiang, dragonczar? If you need lebensraum so badly, there's always Uzbekistan, the Ukraine and Poland. Let all the barbarians under heaven benefit from your benign civilisation.
nandakandamanda
dragonczar. Welcome to the real world. What you say may contain more than a little truth, but it is an unacceptable position in today's world. Ethnic minorities all over the world have started to want their independence, not just from China. It's not usually logical at all, but emotional. The economics of it do not have to make sense. The age of one people dominating another is largely in the past; we are all struggling to live together with respect for each other, but the pain can be terrible.
dragonczar
But many Chinese believe the Uighurs are backward and ungrateful for the economic development the Chinese have brought to the poor region.
What if someone refused to make contributions to the society but demanding payroll everyday?
dragonczar
Critics say the millions of Han Chinese who have settled here in recent years are gradually squeezing the Turkic people out of their homeland.
That was a complete groundless accusation. Xinjiang was China's land and of course Chinese has the right to settle there to live, ethnics difference wasnt an issue to argur over this. That was a discrimination of Han chinese people! Take a simple annalogy:Jews from Russia has the right to live in west bank since there was israel's land(western countries'view over middleeast affairs)...then why Chinese people cannot living in Xinjiang or Tibet? That was also our land flying our flag! It was just a safe haven for some troublrmakers to justified sabotages and defaming China!
dragonczar
Good job, another swift and quick police actions! Urumuqi was run by hardd working Chinese people, there was no discriminations whatsoever claimed by those uyghurs. The poverty of those minorities was the cause of their own unwillingless to work and cooperate but blaming Han Chinese people stealing their land. That was unfair to China or Han Chinese peolple. If those uygurs wants to have the same life they need to work to learn and giving contributions to the society instead of meaningless blaming!
skipthesong
Is there a noticable amount of people who are both Han Chinese and Uyghur? The Uyghurs seen on the news resemble nothing what I know as a Chinese. they look more Indian than anything. Whose right in this situation?

And so it begins. People in the US talking about the Chinese juggernaut. Motley Fool had an article just today called "How Big can China Get?". With a total absence of any Japanese schadenfreude or anything like that, I have to note the fact that China is surrounded by all kinds of countries that are going to be a pain, or be perceived of as a pain, in coming years. Pulling in Mongol and Tibetan lands seemed like a good idea at the time, but having them as weak quasi-independent buffer states might have been smarter in the long run. What a great future China has, but look at all the headaches staring it right in the face.
Beelzebub
Casualties of that magnitude are scary. The Web edition of the People's Daily appears to be reporting the news accurately, including photos from the streets of Urumqi.

Yes, I've been to both many times (several different reservations in the US). What facts do you think I am unaware of? Would it be regarding the Chinese government's flooding of Xinjiang with Han Chinese for decades in order to marginalize the natives? Do you think this sort of unrest originates out of nothing?
tkoind2
Kashgar is nearly gone, overrun by Han business districts. The Uyghur minority has little or not political or economic say as they are simply out numbered. The bottom line is that the Uyghurs are to China what native Americans were in the old west, an obstacle to the governments plans for the area. And they are being marginalized and their culture eradicated.
There is no wonder that the Uyghurs, like many other ethnic minorities are rising up and protesting. I would in their shoes as well. And so would most of you if faced with this kind of threat to your culture and well being.
China cares only about her own vision of rule from border to border. If they are willing to usurp power in Tibet, hold a gun to Taiwan's head and abuse their own poor population of workers, then it is clear that slaughtering Uyghurs is something they won't hesitate to do if they intefere with the plans of China.
I love Uyghur culture and hope that their struggle will gain global attention and point out the horrid state that China is.

If Xinhua is saying 129 the real total is probably closer to 500. Awful. I wish China would be content to let their ethnic groups survive naturally instead of trying to homogenize the country.
pawatan, you ever been to China? Then again, you ever been on a native reservation anywhere in North America? Check the facts out before you spew nonsense out of your mouth.
nandakandamanda
Northlondon. The US say they fear the detainees will be executed if they are returned to China. That is a fairly valid assessment IMHO.
northlondon
Hypocrisy at it's worst. A US political prison, in Cuba, with no international ratification or approval, and they state concern for the human rights of those Chinese detainees ! Who are they trying to kid ?

Uighurs, lovely people. Han Chinese, lovely people. Present situation, a horrible mess. Here's hoping you can all work out a mutually-beneficial solution.
