It was really, really really shocking,"

You should have pulled out your gun and shot back! I mean hell that's what the anti-gun control crowd wants you to believe! You should be prepared at anytime to defend your self with a hand gun. Also according to them, you are guilty for not stopping the gun man from shooting people.

I hope people here can read the sarcasm.

Honestly no one should be shocked, it's common place in the USA.

I had an argument with my American friend just the other day about gun ownership after the mass-shooting last week. He still believes he needs a gun to protect himself - from other people with guns. (roll eyes)

We all know the most effective remedy for firearm violence is thoughts and prayers and more armed people.

8 ( +13 / -5 )

Horrific and unsurprising.

We have posters here claiming they carry guns and ammo on public transport.

Perhaps it's time to check all American nationals with NRA membership and have them under some kind of surveillance., or daily checks/sign ins with the local authorities.

I don't want our Japan to become like America.

Just another day

Especially since not a single mass shooter has been an NRA member.

Especially since not a single mass shooter has been an NRA member.

Correct, however, the NRA is responsible for the unreasonable number of firearms in the US and the pervasive "gun culture.". This means the NRA has indirectly facilitated all mass shootings.

How unfortunate. We were just finishing our "thoughts and prayers" from the Pittsburgh shooting, and were about to address gun control. Guess we'll just have to go back to thoughts and prayers again. We'll do gun control next time.

The GOP

And the National Rifle Association (NRA) will continue to claim that “guns don’t kill people, people kill people”. Another sad chapter of the gun culture in the United States of America.

7 ( +11 / -4 )

Another tragedy and waste of life! Yet still, the NRA and the government will claim that America doesn't have a gun problem!

5 ( +10 / -5 )

If we want a society with hundreds of millions of guns and easy access to them, then mass shooting will be a routine part of life.

11 ( +14 / -3 )

Used to be interested in visiting America, now not so much now probably safer going to Syria or hitchhiking through Afganistn.

Really ? There have been hundreds of millions of guns and even easier access since the founding of this country, certainly when I was growing up. And yet we didn't have mass shootings routinely until very recently.

-8 ( +6 / -14 )

Especially since not a single mass shooter has been an NRA member.

And you can prove that how? The NRA does not give out information regarding it's membership lists and few shooters have lived to answer the question either, so where do you get the information that no NRA member has ever been involved in a mass shooting?

The only people who would know if a mass shooter was an NRA member would be the shooter and the NRA themselves and I am not sure they would be telling anyone if that was the case.

I like The USA. Defender of freedom and number 1 partner of Japan. But it is an extremely dangerous place. My family will never be allowed by me to visit there. Rest in Peace to the victims of this insane gun user. Japan is very lucky guns are illegal.

This is the climate that trump has created.

I can't stand the guy but he is not responsible for creating this climate. These mass shootings have been going on for a long time now. That said... He is definitely not part of the solution either.

Most gun owners are not members of the NRA.

I think it was the CW music that caused this man to become crazed, and probably some Japanese made video games.

/s

Firearms have been seen around the world for hundreds of years. It is only in the last few decades that seemingly normal people have taken to killing multiple other people after something set them off. Something has changed in our society to make the crazed shootings happen. Don't know what it is - bad parenting, too much sugar, GMO foods, little emperor syndrome.

A gun is just a tool. A knife, car, water, fire, chemicals each could all be used to similar effect. There are thousands of ways to cause harm to humans. Solve the root cause.

I would never go anywhere in the US unless I was carrying concealed.

I'm really sorry to say that I'm completely desensitized to this kind of news.

I must sound so cold but it's just another day in America.

Very bad situation, BBC Reporting of the event was stupid - had some commentator saying that the FBI weren't at the news conferences, when moments before, standing just to the right of the Sheriff was a guy wearing a jacket with the letters FBI on it. Then also saying no-mention had been made of any semi-automatics being involved, when again, in the same clip, they had interviewed one of the people at the Bar who said that the Assailant had a semi-automatic gun, and between clip reloads, they escaped!... lousy reporting from the BBC there (sadly).

I sort of have the same sentiment as "Ganbare Japan!", particularly if sending Kids from overseas to attend University there. Though where-else is safe ?

We can guess that the gun came from Nevada.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Wether you're for or against gun control, Republican or Democrate, the leaders of either party have never followed through with a solution. The risk of loosing their jobs always gets in the way!

3 ( +4 / -1 )

What does gun control have to do with this horrible inhuman crime?

He murdered people because they might not share his "world view" It is terrorism against people who have dared to live their own lives and have their own point of view.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

The shooter has been identified as Ian David Long, a resident of Thousand Oaks. He was also an ex-Marine who suffered from PTSD. It should also be noted that his gun was purchased legally. I'm also guessing that a border wall would not have kept him out.

Kentarogaijin

Once again, the left are screaming the guns should all be taken away instead of focusing what the real problems are.

They aren't screaming to take the guns away, and, 2. the guns are the real problem. Without a gun, this tragedy wouldn't have happened.

There are other things we can do

Totally agree. But the main thing we can do is to pass strict gun laws.

keep them contained medicate them and hold them indefinitely should it come to that.

Yeah, because taking away freedoms of mentally ill is better than taking away my guns.

When was the last time you heard of a mass shooting in Japan? Strict gun laws work.

Ah, OK. My mistake.

Pretty obvious he's correct! (rolls eyes)

The Founding Fathers never would have imagined this when they adopted the Bill of Rights. The Second Amendment was intended to protect Americans' right to own a musket and bayonet, not weapons that can kill dozens of people in minutes. The government has become derelict in its duty to protect its citizens.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

The short term solution is MORE MENTAL HEALTH care facilities. This is an immediate problem in the U.S.

Long term solution is of course some type of gun control proposals.

This is one argument that is always brought up, but is completely wrong. If the 2nd Amendment was meant to ensure the right to own muskets, it would have said 'the right of the people to keep and bear muskets shall not be infringed'. It does not. It says 'arms' because the founding fathers were smart enough to know that technology advances and our rights need to keep up with that.

The founding fathers also didn't envision the internet or television. Should the First Amendment only apply to hand-set printing presses?

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Just plain sad.....what is even worse is I am becoming desensitized to this type of news (never though I would say that)

I am afraid this issue (and numerous other problems within the U.S.) will never be resolved unless Americans learn how to talk to each other civilly and like adults. Unfortunately our politicians do not provide a good example either.

It is almost as if the U.S. is being torn apart, piece by piece, and from the outside looking in (as an expatriated American that returns every so often) it almost looks as if this is being done by design.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Except that there are plenty of rules and regulations on both. Whether it's licensing fees for broadcasters, rules about monopolies and competition, Net Neutrality, or more, there are plenty of rules that apply to the First Amendment. While they can be debated in terms of their levels and scope, the reality is that laws on time and place, on content, and more are established consistently.

Meanwhile, laws on the 2nd Amendment are very sparse and considered sacrosanct by many. Its a two faced rule.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

The second amendmenters would have more credibility if they didn't show they hate the constitution and that they hate Americans when it comes to any other amendment. The truth is, they don't care about the sanctity of the constitution, they just want any excuse to keep their guns, and they figure this is an easy one they don't have to justify. They have no consistency though. Start poking at their beliefs of any other amendments and it turns out they hate the constitution.

Kneeling during the anthem? Blasphemy!

Citizenship by birthright? Outrageous!

These people are pure and simple hypocrites.

what is even worse is I am becoming desensitized to this type of news

South Park is hitting it out of the park this season on this topic. School shootings are happening so regularly, that when they're talking about what happened at school in the evening, it's not even a point one of the kids brings up with his parents until prodded about it. It's great.

A gun is just a tool. A knife, car, water, fire, chemicals each could all be used to similar effect. There are thousands of ways to cause harm to humans

And very few of the ways are as effective and efficient as firearms.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Except that there are plenty of rules and regulations on both.

Yet, with few exceptions, what they actually say still isn't restricted. Just as the First Amendment intended.

I am afraid this issue (and numerous other problems within the U.S.) will never be resolved unless Americans learn how to talk to each other civilly and like adults.

This hits the nail on the head. I support the my right to own a firearm, so folks like strangerland assume I dont think football players have the right to kneel for the national anthem.

If people took the time to actually respect people on both sides, things might be very different.
