16 killed in shootout at Mexico's Acapulco resort

OK now who wants to go on vacation in Mexico? I for one would not want to go there because of all the resent problems.

This drug war needs to be take under control by the government sooner rather than later.

If the swine flu doesn't kill, you, always have a sporting chance to get killed by the violence. Mexicans need to be responsible and take care of their problems and not blame others.

Don't support these terrorists until they take responsibility.

This doen't even scratch the surface of all the violence that's happening down there right now. It's quite sad actually. Such a beautiful country and warm people in general.

America has to look long and hard at it's war on drugs and sue for peace. Prohibitions only created organized crime in the 20's and 30's and prohibition today is turning Mexico and to some extant Afghanistan into a Narco-State and filling the jails is not working.

Rigs83, I guess this just goes to show you that making guns illegal will not work. If personal handguns are outlawed in Mexico, then why did the "bad guys" have them, since it seems that all of the posts that I read on JT about America and its gun problems state that if guns were illegal everything would be fine, and crime rates will be down. I present to you Mexico.

Not all of the guns that flow into Mexico come from America. Many of them originate from south of their border, as well as from Europe.

If as many Mexican officals like to point out that the flow of illegal drugs is caused by the US demand for them and it is our problem, then I think that the flow of guns into Mexico is probably caused by the lack of availability to get them in that country and it is "their" problem

Also, we may have a fetish for guns in America, but when was the last time that you have heard of a major shoot out between US soldiers and American citizens in the middle of a tourist area like Las Vegas. True we do have drive bys and workplace and school shootings, but these are done by lone, depraved individuals, not by troops expending 3000 rounds and grenades in the middle of an urban area.

How about spending less time bashing America and focusing on the real issue, a corrupt, inept Mexican government whose idea of dealing with their poor is to send them to the US to get our services.

Gun laws will not work when there is easy access to guns just across the border. That's why the bad guys have them. Rigs83 was very, very clear about that. It must be incredibly frustrating to the Mexican government.

As for the rest of what Rigs83 said, I couldn't disagree more. Most of the rest of it is just US bashing. It would be closer to the truth to blame drug problems in the US on the Mexican cartels than the other way around. It would be in the interest of both countries to shut these people down.

Sometimes, it s hard to tell what you conservative types want.

Stanley50, It's not a matter of being just a conservative, if you cut out corruption in your own house, then at least the people would have more faith in their own government, rather than feeling that they have to leave their own country to get basic services that their government can't provide.

A stronger Mexican government, that will be able to back up their police force with better pay so that they will not have to join the drug smugglers to make a decent living would probably be in Mexico's best interest instead of bashing the US on every account.

Legalise drugs. Yeah, there'll be other problems, but at least the shootin' will go down. I know, alcohol kills lots of people and ruins lives, but at least it is mostly self-inflicted. Legalise marijuana, people will be too chilled to be troublesome, and legalise cocaine with it and people might work happy? :o)

That part of Acapulco is not exactly where Elizibeth Taylor would hang out today. Pretty run down if I remember correctly. Mexico really needs to get a handle on the drug cartels or they risk losing their tourist trade.
