Plenty of other countries have more guns per population that America.

Is that meant to read plenty of other planets?

America tops the list on Earth.

Here we go again.

But of course, it wasn't the gun that killed two people, it was the kid.

Wake up, America!

Many other countries have full access to guns but they aren't offing each other in record numbers like in America. So the question is why??

Fluorine in the water?? Gangsta rap?? Over use of antidepressants such as Prozac??CIA Mind control?? End of the world prophecies being fulfilled?? Or the fact that many people young and old are just plain F'd up??

Take your pick!

Too bad there is no jail time for the owner of the gun (in case he/she left it around). Thumb me down if you want, but there has to at least be some responsibilty.

Just another day in Gun-Loving America. “It’s not supposed to happen here”. But what do you expect?

5 ( +12 / -7 )

Draconian sentences should be given to idiots with guns that fail to secure them in locked gun cabinets. It isn't that hard to fathom, surely even for the gun loving nuts?

The NRA can even cash in on the sales of government approved cabinet, a win win.

“This is just an isolated incident.”

I'm guessing the parents are law abiding citizens. Keep that in mind when someone tells you that we can never "burden" law abiding citizens with any kind of legislation....

@ Noliving: One look at this chart sums it all up.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2012/12/14/chart-the-u-s-has-far-more-gun-related-killings-than-any-other-developed-country/

You may be right in that gun deaths may have decreased somewhat, but what we are witnessing now in America is the birth of the 'mass shooting killers.' Sure..there have been mass shootings in the past but nowhere near the frequency they are happening now.

And it's only going to get worse.

Plenty of other countries have more guns per population that America. The country is screwed up, it comes down to a lot more than gun ownership and access to them, though that is the easy route to take.

Really? Name one. The stats I've seen have America firmly in 1st per capita at almost double the amount of the 2nd place country. Study after study shows that countries with high gun ownership are less safe. At this rate, it would almost be bigger news if there wasn't a mass shooting happening somewhere in America.

So what can we do to keep guns out of the hands of kids besides hope?

Again, and again, and again . . . . .

What a horrible mess!! RIP??

Just checked to make sure my mind wasn't playing tricks and found the original statement, by the Mayor of Sparks, (not the Governor): “It’s been said that it’s a tragic day in the city of Sparks. Our hearts go out to all those affected,” Sparks Mayor Geno Martini told reporters. “The city itself is very safe, this is just an isolated incident."

From LA Times: http://www.latimes.com/nation/nationnow/la-na-nn-sparks-middle-school-shooting-teacher-dead-20131021,0,5110065.story#axzz2iQNVqkWo

There's more to this story that will come out in the near future. One point missing in this version of the incident are the shooter's words when confronting the teacher, something to the effect," You ended my life, now I'm ending yours." This wasn't random but a direct consequence of some prior occurrence.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

In my post above (minus 3 as of this posting) I was quoting the Governor in the article, (use of quotation marks = says he) but that quote has since been deleted in the newly rewritten article above.

Each and every time it happens someone in authority says "This was just an isolated incident." ie No pattern here, folks, move along please.

Some folks see both a pattern and a solution.

The killer was a middle school student... so I'm assuming that the ones he shot were classmates? So around 12 to 13 years old? So a child who clearly has fairly adult language skills ("You ended my life, now I'm ending yours") takes a gun into school and starts shooting at other kids... teacher tries to protect them and is murdered.

This whole scenario is just beyond comprehension... a CHILD doing this? Not a moody teen or a full-on nutjob but a kid who should be playing with his Transformers or whatever. Truly sickening.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

@Get real but if all the kids had guns they could have "defended" themselves!

0 ( +9 / -9 )

" It’s unclear whether the student committed suicide, but authorities say no shots were fired by law enforcement."

Since no one else was armed, that pretty much narrows it down.

Other news source: " The gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after turning the semi-automatic handgun on himself, authorities said."

@Noliving,

What is an acceptable level of gun violence?

How many dead Americans each year?

What is an acceptable level of gun violence? How many dead Americans each year?

Same number that die from Alcohol.

@Noliving, What is an acceptable level of gun violence? How many dead Americans each year?

Same amount that Alcohol kills on a yearly basis: 100k.

@Noliving

I hope you are right about the possibility of jail time. Usually we don't get the rest of the story from the media (although sometimes I can find out about it on Wikipedia--how the punishments turn out, etc.)

You may be right in that gun deaths may have decreased somewhat,

Chronic how is a near 50% decrease in the past 20 years and still falling a somewhat decrease?

Too bad there is no jail time for the owner of the gun (in case he/she left it around).

Ah I wouldn't be so sure about that.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

America's record lows are the rest of the first world's record highs.

That doesn't even make sense, how is a low considered a record high? In order for it to considered low there at one point had to be a higher number, so wouldn't that higher number be the record high?

Besides the point that was being made by Chronic was that Americans were committing homicide with guns at an increasing rate which isn't true.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

A school shooting in the US? You don't say!! Don't worry, apologists will be on here before long to say it isn't a massacre because you need more than four murdered to qualify.

The teacher is indeed a hero. RIP. It's a shame Americans have such easy access to guns in order to carry out such horrible acts.

-3 ( +10 / -13 )

American's aren't offing them selves in record numbers, in fact gun deaths have been decreasing in the US for the past 20 years.

@Noliving--America's record lows are the rest of the first world's record highs. I don't know, maybe you think its unfair that I excluded Somalia?

No that is what the former Australian Prime Minister John Howard says has to be in order to qualify as a massacre and also the FBI.

The kid probably had post-partem depression which makes it okay for some.
