Disgraceful and brutal.

Why are ultra religious people so concerned about other people's sex lives?

There have and always will be LGBT people. You can't beat who we are out of us.

Backwards and barbaric culture and "religion". Indonesia is such a weak nation, they cannot even govern their whole country effectively.

Intolerance of other cultures is not the answer.

But accepting the violent intolerance of two adults engaging in consensual sex is?

100 years after the end of colonialism and the West is still telling the "barbaric cultures" what to do and how to live.

Indonesia may not be a barbaric culture but canning two adults for engaging in consensual sex is.

Respect other cultures, races, religions and skin colors.

You can only make that demand when you respect the differing sexual orientation of others and the fact that what two consenting adults do in the bedroom is none of your business.

Why are ultra religious people so concerned about other people's sex lives?

Not just the ultra religious in places like Indonesia. The ultra religious blow people to pieces with explosives. According to Pew research, 80% of Indonesians don’t think homosexuality should be accepted by society.

The ultra religious are probably more on the side of execution rather than caning people in public like we see in the less ‘progressive’ Muslim-majority countries. The vast majority are concerned with the sex lives of others

Intolerance of other cultures is not the answer.

Agreed. Homosexuality is a culture that has existed and flourished in all societies since the dawn of man. We must respect all cultures. I’m glad you see that and appreciate your tolerant message.

Agreed. Unfortunately, a small minority bastardizes both

Not in the case of extraordinarily high levels of homophobia in Islam. It is mainstream around the world among Muslims and even in non-Muslim majority countries like my home country of the UK.

Muslim reformers, among the bravest people you’d ever meet, are often exasperated by people trying to say it’s a minority. It’s very unhelpful.

But not us LGBT folk, eh?

Let me tell you something, any Indonesians I know are wonderful people. Be they Muslim, Catholic, Hindu etc.

But let's not pretend that ALL religions don't have their extremist (and sex-obsessed) weirdos. And these weirdos seem to get off on administering brutal pain on others... for cultural reasons?

Nah. That's twisting the culture. Something that cannot be respected.

The root of the problem is cultural intolerance and perceived cultural and racial supremacy, which is on full display here.

Oh, that's the root of the problem? Not an inherent hatred at us for merely existing?

Indonesia is a respectable culture and Islam is a respectable religion.

Indonesia has many cultures and peoples. Those who use their religions to oppress and maim others are not respectable.

Odd how Islam is suddenly championed by some who are on record of dismissing it, previously.

Of course it is to be respected. But those who twist it for their own agenda are not to be respected.

Wish some here would be more honest about their homophobic leanings.

Purely anecdotal, of course, but none of my Muslim friends, colleagues, neighbors ever expressed any homophobia towards me or other LGBT people.

Not to say it doesn't happen - a couple I'm friends with were verbally abused on a night bus by some "Indian lads" as they put it. But, short of asking, we don't know what their religion is.

The homophobia I did experience was from mostly white middle aged males. And some pious types.

Intolerance of other cultures is not the answer.

Obviously.

But this statement is used as a false equivalence.

There is a difference, a huge one, in just being intolerant of a culture vs. being intolerant to something that occurs due to that culture's intolerance and ideals being less than desirable.

If you approve of the caning of homosexuals, say so. It'd be more truthful than hiding behind the guise of your false equivalence. So silly.

Of course it is to be respected. But those who twist it for their own agenda are not to be respected.

They are not twisting it when it comes to dealing with homosexuality. The reason for the extraordinarily high levels of homophobia in Islam is that it is clearly and unambiguously stated in the texts which are revered.

To get a more accepting view of homosexuality in Islam you have to do a great deal of ignoring and twisting. The reformers are doing the twisting, not those who despise homosexuality.

Bit like the Christian texts, especially Old Testament.

Christianity underwent a reformation and criticism of the texts does not put your life at risk.

This part of the reason why homosexuals have a much better time of it in Christian societies.

Islam is much, much worse on this issue in the modern world.

Another disgraCeful act by Indonesia. I've traveled all over the world and it's the one country I'll never return. Beautiful sights but the people and culture was so off putting I was dying to leave after 2 weeks traveling . It's the 4th biggest country in the world yet it's still miserably poor and has contributed nothing to the greater world . Sharia law is horrible, and holds the country back.

Bit like the Christian texts, especially Old Testament.

Religions and God worship was written a long time ago. They're intolerant to some things and overly tolerant to others. Not in a good way. Before science, reasoning and information was widely a thing.

With teachings of humanity and empathy, comes a hypocrisy, from all religions, which make them, in turn, quite intolerable.

I'm sure the makers and broadcasters of Jerry Springer - The Opera would disagree.

This part of the reason why homosexuals have a much better time of it in Christian societies.

Being beaten, maimed, spat on, verbally abused, described as an "abomination" only yesterday, told we're going to burn in hell, murders of gay people in Christian countries like the US, UK, Uganda, Russia...

Yeah, better times.

Yes, better. Do any of these countries have execution of homosexuals on the books?

Degree matters.

Of course there is discrimination of gays around the world but the only countries which mandate execution of gays are Muslim-majority. There is a particular problem here. I know people don’t like to deal with this uncomfortable truth and try to brush it off with disingenuous comparisons, but it’s just unhelpful. Muslim reformers will tell you there is a particular problem in Islam on this issue.

Jerry Springer - The Opera

Again, nowhere near the same degree and you know it. As has been pointed out, try satirizing the life of Mohammed in Muslim-majority countries. Try satirizing Mohammed in non-Muslim countries like France or Denmark. You know the difference.

The left always try this whataboutery when Islam is criticised. Apologists for brutal misogyny as part of the law, execution of adulterers and gays, pedophilia, execution of free speech advocates etc. often do the same thing.

There is a particular problem here. Making disingenuous comparisons does not help.

Majority Christian Uganda nearly brought it in recently.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/oct/15/ugandan-mps-press-for-death-penalty-for-homosexual-acts

The other countries have persecuted gay people in varying degrees, some only relatively recently decriminalising being gay or having sex as a crime. Ireland as recently as '93. Putin's Russia cracking down on any perceived promotion of LGBT. There are still murders and savage beatings of LGBT people in so-called Christian countries. Just because they don't have a death penalty, doesn't mean there aren't those who, as part of their culture, want us dead.

It's a backward part of any culture that wants to kill people because of their sexuality.

And it's disingenuous to pretend that it doesn't happen in every country, regardless of religious beliefs.

The libdems always try to dismiss the brutality of their own culture. The whole world is aware of British imperialism and how it's own brutal values were imposed on others. Apologists for the Empire, they still feel they get to lecture everyone else.

I wonder it they lecture their own Muslim friends/colleagues/neighbors?

Religion or not, why do they care so much of someone else's sex/private business? Were they causing a damage to private property, or harm to someone else?

Usually, the loudest gay opponents are closet-gay themselves.

I offer a toast to Toasted Heretic. Keep up the fight and your human rights, but do not travel where people will string you up. Be very careful of Christian evangelists in America as well.

These two men need to move to a different province at least, as the one they live in is the only Sharia Law following province.

Sometimes, aye.

There were a few from schooldays who turned out to be gay. Some of them had deep internal issues to deal with, in often violent ways. Lashing out at those who reflected their turmoil. Others eventually realized their own truths.

But sadly, there are many, who because of their parents/peers/religious beliefs, who readily take to hatred and persecution.

Thanks, I am lucky to have travelled to places where there is hatred, but much more love in them.

It would be better if such laws were dropped. They serve nobody but those who have hatred and vengeance in their hearts.
