Dieter3,

Sorry you live in fear of an inanimate object. I don't.

Sorry you live in fear and loathing of animate objects, AKA people. Hence posting the totally unoriginal and disingenuous:

More people are killed every year in auto accidents in the U.S. than by firearms.

@Strangerland - It's very likely that a firearm both you the freedom you enjoy today.

I'm assuming you missed the word 'bought' or 'provided' or something along those lines.

Americans always have this weird thing about their military. "They fight for our freedom". How is invading a sovereign country like Iraq that has not attacked you fighting for your freedom? If anything it's the opposite, the hype around the 'war on terror' ended up with huge restrictions on personal freedom in the name of safety. Americans are less free today than they've been in decades, if not ever.

Of course guns are made to kill, what are you stupid? Do you think people don't realize that? However, they are also used for plenty of other sporting purposes. Ever hear of the Olympics?

Sorry, sports is not enough of a justification for allowing the populace to arm itself. And the whole point of the sport is showing how accurately you can shoot - in essence how well you could kill someone. There is no other purpose of a gun than for killing, or how well you could kill. Nothing that benefits society, nothing that is essential for a functioning society.

Sorry you live in fear of an inanimate object. I don't.

I don't live in fear of guns - I live in Japan. There is no need to be afraid here. But when I visit the US, I definitely worry about it. Anyone can get shot any time, anywhere in the US. Kids get shot at school, people get shot while shopping, families are shot in their homes. You never know if or when it is coming.

Why don't you read the crime reports - plenty of people being killed with other than guns, especially in Japan.

'Plenty'? I think not. But the fact is, I don't have to worry about getting shot in Japan, which is great!

More people are killed every year in auto accidents in the U.S. than by firearms. In fact, more people are murdered with blunt objects or blades than by firearms in the U.S. We should BAN all of these items immediately since they can be used for ill.

If the object has no other purpose than killing, or showing how well one can kill, then yes, I agree it should be banned. But cars are required for society to function, and knives are required for people to cook. Getting rid of these makes not sense, and your whole argument is a false equivalency, since these are not items built with the purpose of killing, they are items built with some other primary purpose, that are sometimes used for killing. Not equivalent, so your argument fails.

@SenseNotSoCommon - Your handle is fitting for your case. I might substitute the word "intelligence" though.

@smithinjapan - Don't feel sorry for me. I've lived in Japan - I know how safe it is. It's great. Thanks, I'll keep America though in spite of our shortcomings and issues. I enjoy my freedom that you can't. Perhaps you don't want to or don't care about it. I do. Hope Japan never turns into a police state.

SenseNotSoCommonDec. 03, 2014 - 11:00PM JST My Swiss Army knife can kill, but has chosen to open many bottles of wine instead.

People murder other people for four reasons love, lust, lucre, and loathing. Jody Lee Hunt was no different, he murdered three people and would have done it with or without a gun. If someone really wants to kill another human being he/she will use just about anything to do it, even a Swiss Army knife.

But, I'm glad to hear that you have never murdered anyone with your Swiss army knife. But, other people have used their Swiss army knives to murder other people. Should we ban Swiss army knives?

SenseNotSoCommonDec. 03, 2014 - 11:00PM JST Guns are made to kill people.

If you are correct then why didn't I use my weapons to kill anyone? Simple answer is, a reasonable and responsible person will only use his/her gun when his/her life, family or property are threatened. The rest of the time the weapon/tool is stored safety and only brought out for target practice, hunting or cleanings.

The knife is no different, knives have been used killed to kill people throughout history. Remember knives have been around a whole lot longer than guns have.

Humans have used just about everything known to man to kill their fellow human beings. And they will continue to do so with or without guns.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people and that's how it has been since we stepped out of the ooze.

SenseNotSoCommonDec. 03, 2014 - 11:00PM JST People who think guns are just tools, are just tools themselves.

When you can't logically argue your point revert to insults. Try harder next time.

Suspect in 3 West Virginia shootings found dead

The four main reasons for murder are love, lust, lucre, and loathing. So no great mystery here, the guy murdered his ex-girlfriend and her two lovers.

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/leading-causes-of-death.htm

The number one cause of death in Chicago is gang related. Guns are just a tool and as any other weapon. If you want to tackle gun violence maybe going after the folks that sell them illegally would be a great start.

Guns don't kill people, people do. I have owned many weapons in my life and the only time I had to use them were at a range. I kept my weapons stored safely, but always at the ready. I am going to give folks a link to show you the difference between a responsible gun owner and one that isn't.

http://fox13now.com/2014/11/24/woman-says-were-ready-for-ferguson-accidentally-shoots-self-in-head/

The young woman bought a weapon, loaded it, didn't set the safety latch, waved it around in a moving car, boyfriend ducks, car rear ends another car and then she blew her brains out.

Whose fault was it the guns or hers? If you picked hers you are right. She made the choice not to follow the safety instructions and she is now dead.

In my personal opinion any new gun owner should go through weapons safety training before they are allowed to own a weapon. But, that is just my opinion.

smithinjapanDec. 02, 2014 - 11:12AM JSTAnother day, another shooting. I feel so sorry for people in the US, who have to walk around constantly knowing their number could be up at any time at the barrel of a gun when some nutter flips.

In the U.S., the reason for the increase in death from shooting is the of culture of permissiveness that treated felony convictions as a revolving door where the criminal was in and out of prison, and criminals manipulated the system with plea bargains. Ninety percent of all murders are committed by repeat offenders with lengthy criminal records. Think about it this way, more Americans have been murdered in the last five decades than were died in two wars, Korea and Vietnam. There is no longer a right or wrong, no one is responsible for their actions, everything is someone else's fault. I'm poor because of him. I'm bad because my mommy was mean to me. This Administration has done nothing but create division and create a nation of self centered gimme gimme whiney self loving drains on society.

Oh Yes! I DO adore my "Steel Phallus ". Despite living in the city with the HIGHEST Murder Per Capita in the state of Florida, I have NEVER ONCE seen a SINGLE CRIME in progress, nor have I ever been robbed, shot at, etc. NOT everyone that owns a firearm is a CRIMINAL!

State Police spokesman Lt. Dennis Johnson said Hunt's body was found in "a power line right of way" around 7 p.m. Officials said they would not release further information Monday night.

This seems to have been a crime of passion and betrayal. Could have been done with a butcher knife as in the OJ case.

Hmmm, I walk around daily with no worries! Riding my bicycle is much more concern.
