Japanese technology meets Chinese know-how.

Looks like they got the technology part right...

There was no fault on the part of the train or its operation. Based on accounts including photos on other news sites a large truck rolled off a road on a cliff above the tracks and struck the fifth car in the train as the train exited a tunnel. It is the sort of nightmare that train operators have no control over.

Fighto!

Shocking news.

As Taiwan is Japans closest friend, especially in times of disaster, Japan should send rescue teams to help, and engineers to determine how this tragedy occurred.

Only if so requested. This is small accident site (think: tunnel!) and more people crawling around in the small space certainly does not help, especially if they don´t even speak the language.

About the cause of the accident, do you have reason to think it is something different than the truck that collided with the train? Why?

What a tragedy. I feel for the families of those left, what a terrible time to go through.

people heading home at the start of a long weekend traditional holiday to tend to family graves.

.

Sadly there will be more graves to be tended.

.

The official Central News Agency said the truck was suspected to have slid off the sloping road into the path of the train, as its handbrake had not been engaged, and added that police had taken in its driver for questioning

killing at least 48 passengers and injuring 66

.

I hope he gets sent to prison for his lack of judgement in leaving the handbrake off.

And never gets out.

This is sad. I tried to use this line before, but it was closed because of landslides. Taiwan is very beautiful. RIP

This is so unfortunate, may their souls rest in peace

Tina, it's the thought that counts. The two countries commonly provide mutual aid in times of disaster.

Ouch, a terrible number, and several carriages inside a tunnel too.
