ahh human rights. The world needs the US to once again stand up for these people. Of course tellingly the UN will remain silent.

The Congolese people have endured Africa's longest and deadliest war. In this situation, rape is used as a weapon of war. This is the worst humanitarian crisis and one of the deadliest conflicts since World War 11, yet the media has given it little attention, and much of the world remains uninformed. Rape and sexual abuse, committed with unprecedented violence, include acts aimed at humiliating and degrading the victims. When women are raped in public in front of the family, the children and the neighbours, they are ostracised, stigmatised and is the most humiliating act a woman can ever experience. In addition, could you imagine the psychological and emotional effect on the children who witnessed those horrible acts on their mothers, and also witnessed their fathers being killed? The United Nations forces are definitely not able to help with the security problems of the Congo. What I see is a direct connection between the consumers demand for electronic products and one of the worst sexual violence in the world. The electronic consumners are attached directly to this problem because of the conflict minerals from the supply chains that those in power and the electronic companies want. Hence, a conflict like this has destroyed all prospects of development and stability in this country. Therefore the consumers can make a choice and play a role in ending this violence although the mineral conflict is much more complicated. Sadly, we live in such a materialistic world where greed and profit is valued more and money continues to reign as God of this world.

Nice analysis Novenachama, so what do you propose? Shoot them all? Put them all in prison? Castrate everyone? Re-educate everyone? How?

Why exactly should the US stand up for these people? Don't get me wrong, I think its horrifying as well, but the US should not be the worlds policeman, and US citizens should not have to foot the bill in order to solve all the worlds problems. You want a solution, see what China is willing to do.

Just few points. 1- the worst place on earth to be a woman is still Afghanistan (UN report 2011) where suicide is the only solution for women to escape... 2- "the African nation of Congo" is not a country. Democratic Republic of Congo. There are two different "Congo"! As it's two different nations, amalgams should be avoided. 3- Thanks to ONG's, local authorities and UN's work, many people went on trials, are in prison now or being looked for.

There is still a lot of work to be done (as war is not over yet) but women are helped and encouraged to speak.

Poorest and nation with lowest life expectancy(47 years and below) in world include DR congo, nigeria, guinea bissau, rwanda, liberia, central african rep, afghanistan, zimbabwe, lesotho, sierra leone, zambia, mozambique and swaziland.

So many woes in DR Congo and Afghanistan, caused by lack of resources, lack of jobs, lack of money ,lack of good government ,lack of educational empowerment, lack of clean water, lack of houses and lack of other comforts which increase life expectancy.

Rich nations also don't bother, they just want make themselves richer and don't want to take extra work. Military does nothing,to increase life expectancy of the majority of people in these nations. Only good civilian leadership, can expand life expectancy
